  • Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats. -Howard Aiken

2 gigs of ram from the sounds of it Howard.

  • Come on Apple, goddammit!

  • 0.5mm thinner?! Omg, I'll need to go out shopping for a new case or put some duck tape around the new ipad.

  • I wish Apple would say more about the iPad Pro. I would hate to finally upgrade my iPad and then only a few months later have the iPad Pro come out .

New feature: it'll be bendy, like the new iPhones ;-p

BTW Thinner is the only new rumor I picked up from the article, the rest seems to have been rumored already earlier.

Personally, I don't get this obsession with making things thinner. I'd rather see a more beefy battery or chunkier buttons at this point.

@Papertiger, yep, that's a bit of a worry too, although I prefer the current size. But a new, faster chip, and possibly other performance enhancements...I don't think they will relent on their silence though, just for that very reason...people holding off on buying the new iPads while waiting for the Pro....

My first thought as well.I hated the weight of my old iPad4 but i was in love that it was build like a tank. The mini retina still is ok because of the smaller size.Good compromise between sturdy and small/lightweight.The Air in my hand though made me feel a bit worrying but now...even thinner??

Why not putting a little more battery power in instead?

Hope the next mini retina will also get 2GB.

  • I think it is close to madness to use air without a chunky case (sorry guys). Last time I took mine out for cleaning it almost slipped out of my hands. Caught it half way down. Scary shit!

  • The funniest thing is that Samsung will be the chip-makers.

  • My guess is that many of us, especially current Air users, will wait to see what happens about Pro. At least for 12 months or until (more likely) those dang developers upgrade the apps we like the most to take advantage of the 2 gigs to the point we feel forced to upgrade.

And then the Pro will come out.

  • Specs look good. wonder if the shift to a minimum of 32gb hard drive space would mean a higher price or if that just becomes the new "entry level".

lol -- you're probably right about the timing. I'm on an iPad 4 right now, but more and more I would love for my iPad to be "IT" for me music-wise (since it's easier to have with me all of the time than a laptop!)

  • I'm good size wise, just give me rammage.

It's probably going to be a while for the Pro. The rummor is that it will be released in 2015, and developers will have to update their apps to run on the giant screen. Another issue is that it's first generation so there is a good chance there will be problems with it. Plus it may be too big for us. Imagine trying to play DrumJam on a huge screen.

  • The mute/vibration switch is said to be completely gone to keep the design super slim.
The volume buttons are also more recessed.

It's not a mute/vibration switch, it's a mute/lock rotation switch. I use the lock rotation like crazy all day long, at work and at home. Hope that's not confirmed. I know lock rotation is available on the swipe up control panel but the button is more convenient.

I'm interested in lighter and larger, myself, as well as more RAM and power. A 12" iPad would be spectacular for apps with lots of slider and dials. Just imagine Auria on a 12" display.

I carry my iPad around to a lot of meetings. Weight-wise, in this regard, it's OK, I can't complain. But for lying in bed or lounging and reading, it's still too heavy after a short while. Without a case it would probably be OK or close to it, but I ain't handling my iPad without a protective case.

Shame that the iPad mini 3 will still have 1GB ram.

  • We'll see.Another rumour that is far from confirmed ;)

Likewise. I was upset when they made it a mute only switch. Apple at least provided an option for users to choose what it affected. There better be a damn good reason for eliminating the switch entirely -- and shaving off .5 mm ain't one.

  • @fjcblanco It is my belief that Apple and Samsung are setting legal precedent with all these court cases. They are using lawsuits between each other to establish a principle rule down the road. It benefits both of them in the end...

  • I'm happy, my iPad Air is going on Ebay tomorrow most likely. I'll flip it before the prices drop more, and be ready to order a new one on the 16th. :)

When was it made mute only? Is that an ios8 thing? My air on 7.1.2 still gives me the option.

This was a few years ago. Or at least a few hardware versions ago...so feels like years even though it might not have been. :D

edit: all the way back to iOS 4.2... http://www.macworld.com/article/1154113/firstlook_ios42b1.html

I'm using that switch quite a lot as rotation lock. :(

Ok so even crappier battery times then the Air under high cpu load, no rotation lock switch, even less durable then the already shoddy built Air. This thinnest war thing is silly, Apple. (What? I just like to get the negative stuff on print first u don't need to read this;) Btw smells like lemons in here?

  • Considering that I use that switch on my iPad 2, iPad Air, and my kids retina minis as an orientation lock, that information is incorrect. In preferences it can be selected to be either mute or lock. Perhaps they were referring to iPhone? The 4s was my first iPhone and I still have it. There is a software portrait orientation lock on the swipe up panel, but the hardware switch is mute only.

Pretty hasty calling a yet to be introduced device (with no guarantee any device will be introduced) a lemon isn't it? Rumors are rumors, that's all. If they announce something new, then there will be something to discuss. I can safely say that the iPad Air has been anything but a lemon for me.

@mrufino1 Best thing I ever bought, apart from diapers maybe.

  • Your own diapers or for the kids? ;-)

  • We share, but it's still a hefty investment....

The option to set the switch to orientation lock was removed at that time, but was reintroduced later after users complained.

Ah, I misunderstood the original comment, I thought it was said that it does not exist now.

  • I've never used a case with my Air. Feels wrong. Can't do it. Love the feel of it naked in my hands. Love my Air too...anyway, completely unrelated, I have a ipad Air with a crack on the lower left of the screen for sale if anyone is interested.

For me the tough case gives it a robust road worthy feel. I just chuck it around along with the rest of my gear no problems.

@Tarekith I'm gonna stay put. When #2 comes out, I'll wait for a couple of months and see if there's any wiff of lemons and then probably will make my move. Hopefully Samplr will have gotten the ios8 update by then.

Edit: this sounds like January and seems to be traditionally my ipad upgrade month. Just after Christmas when the grey imports start showing.
