AUM could be better if..
AUM is great app but there are some things that don’t seem that hard to implement that could make it a lot better. Here is what I have encountered that's bothering me most using it almost every day:
The bookmark menu, which is crucial for navigation shouldn’t be hidden by full width windows. It would be more useful located in the top bar next to the MIDI router and DSP info which is available from anywhere. Having to x out of a plugin just to navigate to a different track isn't the best experience, it's adding an unnecessary tap.
The bookmark menu could utilize all available verticle space to avoid having to scroll. Setting a bookmark every 4 tracks still isn’t enough in larger projects and I always reach the point where I have to scroll, adding another unnecessary UI interaction. There is really no reason to limit its height imo.
An option to rename bookmarks independent of the track name would also help with navigation, because it could be used for grouping.
Adding new tracks wastes too much time in larger projects because you have to move them manually from the end to where you want it, and the zoom out feature to move the tracks and gesture doesn’t always invoke like it should. The workaround of duplicating a track and removing items works but isn’t ideal.
It should be possible to insert tracks left or right from the current track. An option to insert a track could be added alongside duplicate and remove channel functions.
Dividers with labels to section different parts within a project and make navigation easier would be nice as well, currently I’m using empty MIDI tracks for this.
The color picker sucks because it’s almost impossible to color label tracks consistently. It should offer picking from a palette or at least offer Hues or steps in % instead of a “infinite” colors wheel and smooth brightness slider.
Renaming tracks should be more flexible and offer a separation of track number and track name, kinda like the hash tag in Ableton tracks where it updates the number for custom renamed tracks automatically. The current implementation makes it very tedious to change.

...if it had multi-core support allowing more CPU heavy Plug-Ins to be used at one time...
🙏 hopefully one day!
Would only make it 2x better on my 9th gen iPad 😛
THIS.. 🏆
There’s a feature-requests channel on the AUM Discord server. You should add yours to the list https://discord.gg/aaErVc65b3
+another one
also /8 + /16 time sig denomination - I can’t work on many of my pieces in AUM for this lack .
using /4 is not the same and it ruins sync of bar lengths .
I wish the complete fader ui would be redesigned, more compact so that you can see 8 to 10 tracks at once.
If this were actually the case for recording fx tails ..
… unless it is and I’m missing something but every time I push pause when recording , all recording stops .
Multi-core support would be nice.
I’ve always wanted a way to collapse sub tracks/channels under a “parent” channel. This would be especially useful when using multi-out auv3 apps like (for example) Drambo or Hammerhead. Having those eight multi-out channels where you could “tuck” them away behind a parent channel would make some projects a lot more tidy. Even on a 12.9” iPad, eight channels still takes up 2 whole screens of swiping left and right.
I’ve mentioned it to @j_liljedahl but I might be in the minority.
I disagree with the premise: AUM can be improved, but I doubt anything suggested here would make it "10x better." Many, many people find it wonderful as is.
Collapsing channels is a good point. Bookmarks and dividers can be an alternative, maybe even faster because you don't have uncollapse anything. This reminded me of another thing I'll add to the first post, the option to rename bookmarks!
Multi core would be nice to have but the other stuff are workflow killers imo and probably much easier to to implement.
10X would require an AI based vocal with lyrics generator so we can take credit for creating commercial pop, rap, or R&B tracks that people buy.
Probably standard DAW features in 3-5 years. Hopefully it has a slider for IQ level of intended audience or maybe reading level.
AUM is glorious in its ability to assemble massive AUv3 clusters of apps. With the newer M series chips you get tons of CPU compared to the older gear.
My use case for AUM has changed over the years. I still use it a lot, but mainly as a sketchpad/sandbox; a place to play with ideas. It's easy to wire/rewire connections and the UI stays out of the way so it really works for me when I want to try out a quick idea or patch, or check out a new sequencer, synth or effect. Beyond that, I'm find I'm more productive when I move my ideas into a DAW environment to start building an actual song/track.
I used to pine for AUM to have a visual timeline with audio and MIDI clips and a more compact mixer interface and so on (basically to become a fully-fledged DAW), but now, I actually kind of want it to remain like it is, so I've always got that comfortable sketchpad/sandbox to jump into. The things that it does well, it does so well that I'd hate to see them compromised for the sake of new features. I wouldn't complain about multicore support
Its perfect
If everyone thought like this we'd still be living in caves. Seeking improvement is the driver of progress.
The OP and others make some well considered suggestions which I would like to see also. They do not fundamentally change functionality but would definitely make it easier to navigate larger projects. Of course it's up to the dev if he wants to implement them, and it's up to individual users to use them or not.
You can always go back to ableton
I have to admit I've longed for track folding of groups.
Couple of months ago when I didn't use AUM that intensively and just every now and then to test some plugins I'd have said the same, but now with heavy use I can't just unsee certain things that would improve it for me. I started this thread because I wanted to see what others think about those points and what they have discovered.
Developers spend thousands on UX research and I'm providing my detailed feedback for free. I've done UI design and coding in the past and those are things I regard as low hanging fruits compared to low level stuff like multi core.
I'm using both. 15 channels (8 audio, 7 midi) in AUM are covered by Drambo, couple of synths and extra sequencers, and a lot of return tracks (no letters left, the last one P is the master). When I have a solid sequence and carved out enough layers with the returns I record everything and populate Abletons session view with it.
It’s really a testament to how far iOS musicmaking has come since AUM was introduced in 2016. This new "mixer for audio units" arrived with a somewhat unclear use case. The forum debated its value: How was it any different from Audiobus? Well, it has proved to be fantastically durable and adaptable. I have relied on it for years now; it's the fastest way to set up a creative environment on iPad and iPhone, and its design encourages frictionless experimentation. It hasn't had a paid upgrade in nearly a decade; I already feel guilty about my lone $10 tip.
However, AUM might have reached its peak. This post is so comical to me in its outrage. The idea that this app (made by one guy who regularly would stop by the forums to entertain feature requests and occasionally post lovely ambient excursions) has many aspects that SUCK shows how much higher expectations are. Which is good! But I think that all these extra iterations belong in a different app; maybe let AUM be for inspiration and "AUM2" be for finishing and mastering the results of that inspiration.
(I will allow that the color picker does kind of suck. Don't make me find that exact shade of periwinkle freehand!)
Outrage? Getting offended by the word suck in a music forum in 2024? That's real comedy.
Most would pay for an IAP or v2 with improvements.
I think it would be better as a new app, which would hopefully incorporate a timeline and audio editing.
Not offended at all! Just a little embarrassed for your tantrum.
Huh. I didn't read any outrage or tantrum.
I guess we all have different sensitivities to the way people express themselves.
Maybe it was the “10x better” claim that’s upsetting people. 10% better perhaps, or 1.1x better if you prefer. Or maybe I’ve been watching too much Alan Partridge.
Timeline editing really blows on a small screen, I hope it develops into a flawless virtual mixer with some of the mentiones things ironed out and multi core to justfify getting a better iPad.
English isn't my native language, sorry if I'm too direct or emotional. (Have to google Tantrum ngl)
The 10x in the title was basically an anticipation, it could become true if it develops into a thread with many potential suggestions. I've changed the title, but it's a bit boring now..
Your English is excellent!
Timeline editing might now be a drag on a small screen, but I have faith that if anyone can make it intuitive, it's @j_liljedahl.
Just give us slidover 😭
Thanks, this means a lot to me because I don't use any spelling correction or tools like Grammarly for myself. Sometimes when reread my posts they seem a bit harsh to me though. Could be the result of a still quite limited vocabulary compared to my German.
A way to freeze or bounce tracks to audio, and timeline editing on the Mac version would be great. The timeline editing UI could be ported to an extended desktop mode for iPads.
Timeline editing is still a hassle in Logic for ipad and I doubt that it can be done as good as on a larger screen. Apple has the most know when it comes to touch UIs imo, and they haven't cracked that nut yet. Most people who are used to Logic on the desktop and pushing squares around seem to quickly flock back to the desktop version after trying it on the iPad.
-UI scaling
-split screen support for iOS
-split screen in AUM
-top and bottom split
A mode that hides the top bar of an auv3 -window.
-A dock with all apps currently in the project.
sorted by type
single tap to show/hide any plugin without looking for it first.
-multiple spaces for different layouts.
-anything that prevents the endless scaling, swiping, and hiding needed to navigate.
-Midi Knobs/buttons which you can load into a empty slot like an instrument/effect
