  • @kirmesteggno no outrage or tantrum detected in your post by this reader! And yes, your English is fantastic too. All I saw here was a well laid out, respectful post, suggesting some things that would make the app better for you.

    1. Collapseable / Groupable tracks
    2. Inserts (like sends, but backwards) per track
    3. Just better/more customizable work space. Zoomable to get more stuff on screen…
    4. The ability to have the little control widget to the left of a node be more assignable. For example, I’d love to be able to have it be cc1/mod wheel for an app like Model D or iSEM for when you don’t have hw controller you can still mod wheel or pitch wheel.

    -UI scaling
    -split screen support for iOS
    -split screen in AUM
    -top and bottom split
A mode that hides the top bar of an auv3 -window.
-A dock with all apps currently in the project.
    sorted by type
single tap to show/hide any plugin without looking for it first.

    -multiple spaces for different layouts.
-anything that prevents the endless scaling, swiping, and hiding needed to navigate.
-Midi Knobs/buttons which you can load into a empty slot like an instrument/effect

    👍 good points

    Thanks!

I've replaced two words in the opening post and removed the 10x in title after the complaints. "isn't the best experience" was "sucks" for example. The original title in combination with those words was slightly sensationalist to be fair. No hard feelings.

  • I have been thinking for a long time about a way to implement the Elektron Autochannel feature in AUM.
    My current suggestion is:
In a channel's MIDI controls > add "Keyboard"(built-in) below "Show plugin"
Since it is possible to route a USB keyboard to the built-in keyboard and one can change the built-in keyboard destination with the key symbol top left,
this should make it possible to switch the USB keyboards destination with any controller toggle (f.i. a switch on a USB Akai or Novation mixer)

That's probably the biggest possible upgrade mentioned in this thread. Would pay for a MIDI clock IAP lol.

  • Last year, I tried to make a better looking dynamic fader with an optional pre and post readings box but failed to make more space. You would also be able to see pre sends visually, because everything above that box is a pre-fader and everything below that box is a post-fader.

    Here is my attempt:

  • Multi core would make AUM so much more powerful.

In case this helps, you can also set the built-in keyboard destination by double tapping the three-line menu button to the left of the desired node.

Multicore is what I’ve been waiting for… now I use miRack instead AUM for some projects. Does @j_liljedahl spoke in the past about upgrading AUM to multicore support?

According to a post from the dev from 2022 it's on the roadmap: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1114181/#Comment_1114181

Is it possible to fund IAPs somehow like devs are doing it with preorders for apps? Maybe an external way?

AUM is great app but there are some things that don’t seem that hard to implement that could make it a lot better. Here is what I have encountered that's bothering me most using it almost every day:

The bookmark menu, which is crucial for navigation shouldn’t be hidden by full width windows. It would be more useful located in the top bar next to the MIDI router and DSP info which is available from anywhere. Having to x out of a plugin just to navigate to a different track sucks, it's adding an unnecessary tap.

The bookmark menu could utilize all available verticle space to avoid having to scroll. Setting a bookmark every 4 tracks still isn’t enough in larger projects and I always reach the point where I have to scroll, adding another unnecessary UI interaction. There is really no reason to limit its height imo.

Adding new tracks sucks in larger projects because you have to move them manually from the end to where you want it, and the zoom out feature to move the tracks and gesture doesn’t always invoke like it should. The workaround of duplicating a track and removing items works but isn’t ideal.

It should be possible to insert tracks left or right from the current track. An option to insert a track could be added alongside duplicate and remove channel functions.

Dividers with labels to section different parts within a project and make navigation easier would be nice as well, currently I’m using empty MIDI tracks for this.

The color picker sucks because it’s almost impossible to color label tracks consistently. It should offer picking from a palette or at least offer Hues or steps in % instead of a “infinite” colors wheel and smooth brightness slider.

Renaming tracks should be more flexible and offer a separation of track number and track name, kinda like the hash tag in Ableton tracks where it updates the number for custom renamed tracks automatically. The current implementation makes it very tedious to change.

It’s really a testament to how far iOS musicmaking has come since AUM was introduced in 2016. This new "mixer for audio units" arrived with a somewhat unclear use case. The forum debated its value: How was it any different from Audiobus? Well, it has proved to be fantastically durable and adaptable. I have relied on it for years now; it's the fastest way to set up a creative environment on iPad and iPhone, and its design encourages frictionless experimentation. It hasn't had a paid upgrade in nearly a decade; I already feel guilty about my lone $10 tip.

However, AUM might have reached its peak. This post is so comical to me in its outrage. The idea that this app (made by one guy who regularly would stop by the forums to entertain feature requests and occasionally post lovely ambient excursions) has many aspects that SUCK shows how much higher expectations are. Which is good! But I think that all these extra iterations belong in a different app; maybe let AUM be for inspiration and "AUM2" be for finishing and mastering the results of that inspiration.

(I will allow that the color picker does kind of suck. Don't make me find that exact shade of periwinkle freehand!)

Most would pay for an IAP or v2 with improvements.

I think it would be better as a new app, which would hopefully incorporate a timeline and audio editing.

Timeline editing really blows on a small screen, I hope it develops into a flawless virtual mixer with some of the mentiones things ironed out and multi core to justfify getting a better iPad.

Outrage? Getting offended by the word suck in a music forum in 2024? That's real comedy.

Not offended at all! Just a little embarrassed for your tantrum.

English isn't my native language, sorry if I'm too direct or emotional. (Have to google Tantrum ngl)

    Your English is excellent!

Thanks, this means a lot to me because I don't use any spelling correction or tools like Grammarly for myself. Sometimes when reread my posts they seem a bit harsh to me though. Could be the result of a still quite limited vocabulary compared to my German.

I am a literate and articulate native English speaker, and yet I still say the wrong thing the wrong way nearly every day. Communication with other sentient beings is one of the main challenges in this material reality.

  • Native MIDI recorder that automatically records a MIDI note track per enabled channel by default along with the audio track.

Well technically it's possible for sure (make an IAP that just adds an inactive MIDI clock icon for now, and it will enable MIDI clock in once it's ready), the bigger question is whether Apple allows that.

  • Is it still being worked on by Kymatica? Are they in the tread?
I looked at APP store, last update for AUM was 1 year ago.

    So my turn:
AUM would be better if there was a hotkey to minimize all windows( is there already?) to end up at the bottom of the screen .
    I love your app man

    Well.

At the risk of being boring…

Automation. Automation automation automation. And… did I mention automation? (I.e. being able to record and ‘overdub’ fader and button changes.

    Just that, nothing else.

    Steinberg managed it years ago.

Doesn’t need to be fancy, or mess with the UI at all, really. Just a pop up clickable point ‘graph’ a la Steinberg, only there if you want/need it, on a per channel basis, just as the channels themselves are. Being able to iteratively tweak channel settings on consecutive go rounds to channels as I spawn them as the piece develops would transform the sophistication of my current ‘record everything live in AUM’ workflow.

(I only have so many fingers, you know.)

Would I pay again for an AUM 2 incorporating this, or as an IAP?

Maybe it was the “10x better” claim that’s upsetting people. 10% better perhaps, or 1.1x better if you prefer. Or maybe I’ve been watching too much Alan Partridge.

    Un-bloody-believable

Let me just add...automation! And, yes, I'd gladly pay extra for it...
