Won’t be too long till Amazon have good discounts on the base Air M2. That might be the best-priced Apple product ever. 128gb is enough to squeak by I’d say.

A good rule of thumb is to get the best processor and as much storage as you can afford when you buy, because these will affect your productivity more than anything over time. You’ll have to delete or offload files if you have too little storage.

iPads are easy to upgrade (BT transfer), actually mind blowingly easy to upgrade and also to resell. I wouldn't max out an iPad if I don't need the capacity in that moment and have other things on my buylist (who doesn't?).

  • You need at least the 1TB version of the Pro to get all the M4 cores too, that's not immediately apparent when you are ordering.

Yea and the 16GB of ram too!

Luckily for my needs I don't think I need either, but its definitely not obvious.

It looks like a lot of the M4 test improvements came from the image-related tests that may not translate fully to iOS music production needs. So even though Geekbench 6 is showing ~3800 single-core, many of the tests only went up ~10% vs the M3

I'm still excited to get an M4 iPad, but its good to have realistic expectations :D

  • @qqq

It's max vs. non max version in tha test though. Better than M3M is actually brutal performance for iPads.

  • Where do y’all get this “money” I keep hearing about?

    Yea good to point out.

    Edit: Oh, and mortgage
Edit2: And two kids through college
Edit 3: Ok, I’ll keep this to myself

 Yea no kids and a cheap mortgage in a rural area for me. Portugal seems really nice though, I'm jealous!

I know my M1 (12.9”) can’t keep the speed going for any meaningful time before the iPad overheats. Unless they put fans inside the new iPads, what M version you have won’t matter.

My A14 iPad has some overheating issues... but it just dims the display. I've not had any performance issues. But I'd be curious to hear other users experiences as well on this.

  • Currently using an M2 12.9”, and the only time I’ve had heating issues is when I use it sitting in the sun during the summer. In the shade or indoors I’ve never even felt it get that warm, handles working with multiple 4k video streams in FCP like a champ.

Are you by any chance using AUM which overloads one core while the others are idling due to lack of proper multi-core support?

My tests have all been with Drambo which is also single-core for the audio

    Any AUv3's involved?
I mostly use it to create simple synth sounds with the built-in modules and seldom chose the CPU :sunglasses:

Oh yea a lot lol. AUv3s with oversampling quickly eat into processing.

But my overheating issues have been minor for sure. Its just that my iPad once it gets going will dim the display a fair bit. Fairly annoying, I had somewhat gotten use to it but hopefully will be less a problem with the new display. Time will tell.

No I’m maxing out every part of the chipset (CPU, Neural engine, GPU) with Draw Things.

Which means you’re only using a small part of it (your iPad would get hot otherwise).

  • I’m curious why the Apple Store has refurbished Air 4’s but no Air 5’s???

  • Rarely pushing the limits of my 2019 iPad Mini here…

I have the extra disposable cash in my pocket right now. (I don’t normally carry that much cash 💰 in my pocket. I just closed a high yield savings account that turned out was looking a little sketchy)

It’s just that I’m trying to learn not to once again be hyped into new Apple tech that leaves me feeling kinda suckered about a month or so later… when I’m finally honest with myself that no… it’s not really all that much faster with real world use… and that yes, I got fooled… again.

However, that first month or so of having the latest is indeed glorious. :)

But, only just until that new gear smell starts to fade 😂

Looks like the last mini was the 6. Has Apple officially discontinued the mini line? I was really hoping for a lightweight, yet suped-up silicon version of the mini with usb-c that could also support an external display or a fast external drive when desired.

Edit: rumor sites say a new mini is coming later this year. Fingers crossed 🤞

  • M4 of. course

  • FYI: I don’t know about other countries, but if you are buying in the US and are either in the military or a military veteran, you get a decent discount. Slightly better than the educational discount even. You have to jump through a couple hoops to prove your service, but it’s pretty easy via ID.me.

11in m4 pro 2T wifi comes down to $1799 (military) vs $1899 (education) vs $1999 regular

Experience no overheating at all using my iPad Air 4 A14. Maybe I’m not pushing it far enough in music production.

I'd be willing to get a discontinued current model if it's a better value than the new ones, but the 11 inch Air with 512GB sounds like it hits most of my needs.
    The impossible criteria:

    Fast (enough)
    Lots of storage (within reason)
    Futureproof (ish)
    and crucially
    as cheap as possible.

Never interested in using the iPad for anything but music (or to watch a movie on a plane).
Probably don't need a new Pro.
My 2017 iPad Pro has 512GB of storage, and I'm not near filling it, though its chip will not run Logic, which I wouldn't mind being able to do. (For the record, Apple suggested I could trade in this mint-condition device for $40!)

    Suggestions?

Yes, I think that's a good option. Looking at UK prices the equivalent M4 Pro model is £300 more expensive, so the Air seems like a good deal in comparison.

The M2 is going to be a huge step up from your 2017 model (I went from the 2017 10.5 Pro to an M1 Pro and the difference was significant). Plus you will be able to run Logic, which has multicore support, so you will be able to run bigger projects with more plugins etc...

Thanks, Richard. I'm still stuck on whether a 13-inch screen will be revelatory compared with an 11-inch screen. I think I'd rather pay for storage, but the days of wandering my mansion, idly making beats in the solarium, the ballroom, the wine grotto, the other solarium seem to be a thing of the past.

    😂

  • I’ve got an iPad Pro M1 and I keep thinking about buying an old 12.9 2nd gen iPad Pro just for the headphone jack.

  • I grabbed the 11’ M4 Pro 1TB, Magic Keyboard and Pencil Pro

Nice. I’m going to find it hard not to go for the 1TB just for the 16gb RAM but really 256gb storage is plenty for me so I’m dithering over it.

Yes, the 16gb RAM was the deciding factor for me

  • That was my dilemma too. I never need more than 256GB, but that ram was too tempting.
