That sucks. RIP.
No way. I saw Big Black with Dinosaur Jr at ULU in 1987, absolute monster of a gig. Saw Rapeman a couple of years later, another great gig. I have tickets to see Shellac in June.
61, it's no age. RIP Mr Albini.
No fucking way!. Oh, shit this is devastating. I was just watching videos of him yesterday.
I’m not exaggerating, he’s one of my most admired human beings ever, not only because he’s incredibly talented, intelligent and has produced some of the best albums in history… the guy is an absolute gem and example of work ethics, morality and coherence.
I’m in shock 😞
Electrical Audio, his studio had rates available on their website. You knew how much it was to hire Albini for a session, and it wasn’t too much either. The guy was so against all the corporate ego bullshit that he had his rates and would work as an engineer, with his cool apron, for anyone.
It was always in the back of my mind that one day I’d go work with him at his studio for a couple of days. What a fucking privilege that would have been!. Oh well… I’m positive he was an atheist so I’m not wishing him anything, so my condolences to the ones who’ll miss him. I sure will.
What a loss, what a legend 😭
Oh, jeez. RIP.
Edit: I didn’t know about Steve's dark side.
As a teenager, he was a hero of mine. As I got older i no longer felt the same about a lot of my teenage heroes. But with Albini, the more I learned about him and from his tutorials and interviews the more I admired him. A very big loss.
Oh wow, damn.
Sad to hear. He knew how to keep the rough side of a band and still bring out the commercial side.
Damn
Rest In Peace
Oh that’s a bummer.
One of my all time favourite albums:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pixies+surfer+rosa+album
…Seriously? Have you not read about how much he loved violent child pornography?
If I recall correctly, he was friends with someone who was into that. I don't think Steve was into that himself, maybe I'm misremembering, although it is still sketch to remain friends with someone like that. Regardless, Steve was also in a band called "Run (racial slur) Run" (I dare not repeat the actual name here).
But, Steve was brilliant and made a lot of great music. I guess for me personally I'm mourning the loss of the musician rather than the man himself.
Footnote - Despite what Tahiche said, I wasn't planning to correct him as I didn't think it'd be appropriate to do so, but I'm glad you did. Someone has to be the "bad guy" here (using the term ironically and loosely).

“Brian Fox, an engineer at Albini’s studio, Electrical Audio Recording, said Wednesday that Albini died after a heart attack Tuesday night… He never took royalties from records on which he worked—including Nirvana’s In Utero, which has sold over 15 million copies—despite that being customary in the industry, and he kept his day rates for artists comparatively low, especially as a producer with his pedigree.”
There are records he was involved with that I have enjoyed like Surfer Rosa, Rid of Me, and Pod. He's the guy that put up the microphones so that the really talented musicians could be heard. But the things he's said about the child porn he enjoyed and promoted were so disgusting I can't work up a single sad feeling about his departure.
@abf : I didn’t know that about him, so I did a quick bit of googling, and, yup, you’re right. I used to work as a cop specialising in Child Protection. I have seen the lifelong harm child sexual abuse can cause. It’s not just about the company he kept, but his own openly acknowledged interests. This is unacceptable:
1) from Reddit, with sources:
“In his glowing endorsement of Peter Soto's PURE magazine, a child pornography zine which got Sotos convicted of possessing and distributing CP, Albini praises PURE for it's punk rock ethos and speaks warmly of Sotos. Albini also goes on to express his own pleasure at the content of the magazine:
‘The cover of PURE 2 is a guy holding open a toddler’s puny hole so his spuzz can dribble out. The girl is past crying. She is destroyed… Like I said, I like that sort of thing’
Source: https://i.imgur.com/Gm7otzo.jpg”
And 2)
“From the European Big Black tour diary, Albini recounts his enjoyment of the child pornography magazines he found in a sex shop in Hamburg: (see Hamburg entry below, paras 2&3)
‘Jaded as I am, I can't help but flip seeing a girl and guy of twelve or thirteen, tops, ramming Martel bottles up each other's asses. These are not the Dutch equivalent of abused trailer-park kids, either. They look to be in excellent health and seem to be honestly enjoying this. Makes all the conventional arguments against this kind of thing seem really silly.
They're kids. Kids like to play with their own and other people's privates. They're just being photographed at it. Now, people who get a voyeuristic charge out of watching them, like me, I guess, well, we've got some grip-on-reality problems. There's maybe 1% of all pornography that has any effect on me, and it's definitely not a turn-on very often. But when it is, and it's as weird as this, it's pretty hard to take.’

Further elaboration on Albini's friendship with Sotos and his own child pornography conviction:
Sotos defending his distribution of child pornography in court, stating "child abuse is a sublime pleasure: https://i.imgur.com/UCn5NFB.png
Albini praising Sotos' "art" and his friendship with the convicted child pornographer: https://i.imgur.com/WLQb5ke.png
Albini also helped Sotos produce Buyers Market, a unauthorized collection of court testimonies and police interviews from child rape victims.
TL;DR - Steve Albini is a pedophile who has twice admitted to owning and enjoying child pornography. He is also close friends with Peter Sotos of White House, a convicted child pornographer who published kiddy porn in the 80s and makes "art" about child rape.”
I knew he had a rep as an edgelord, and in recent interviews, like the Guardian one (which makes no mention of the paedophile stuff) he recants on some of his earlier stances, like the band Rapeman, and so on. But this is far beyond edgelord 4chan-style lulz trolling.
So: Great musician and engineer/producer. But as it turns out, as a human:
Not so much.
@Svetlovska
Ah shit. I'm amazed that this didn't make more of a splash, considering so many people have had their careers ended for far less serious behaviour.
This is a disturbing find,🤢 I’ll stop with R.I.P.-ing anything. Thank you for the research.
@Svetlovska The music industry….shame really…how did this not get more publicity?
I did some Googling and there is some publicity that covers a few years, but surprisingly little. Perhaps it wasn’t considered as profitable a story as whatever the Krapdashians were doing that week.
After seeing all that, I take back my RIP. Good god! I'm glad he's dead. One less sick f--- in the world. Hopefully his friend Sotos is next.
Trigger warning for discussion of child abuse.
@Mountain_Hamlet : Why did this get so little media attention? I guess it is because to the wider world he was a niche name, already had a rep for ‘edgy comments’, and wasn’t directly convicted of anything. Makes me wonder what a warrant would have turned up mind, given that at one point he clearly had stuff in his possession to show and disgust a friend with (last para of the Pure mag, above). Still, he’s now taken the Jimmy Saville defence, so I guess we’ll never know.
Early in the internet era I was involved in something called Operation Ore, at the time the largest UK police operation since rounding up German spies in WWII, arresting clients of a US child porn website. At first, offenders who had paid for access to libraries of the most disturbing abuse (really disturbing. Adults with new borns, for example) were being given sentences on a par with the primary abusers. But as the numbers stretched into thousands world wide, the courts adopted a classification scheme, with only the ‘worst’ imagery attracting the heaviest sanction. Even when the worst imagery was part of a set of ‘lesser’ imagery. Which is to say the same crime.
By the end of the Operation, people were just getting fines for the ‘lesser’ stuff. (Some people may recall that Pete Townsend accepted a caution and was obliged to sign the sex offenders register for using his credit card to access this same site. For research, he stated: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19876936.)
I never personally agreed with the downgrading of sanctions. Every image was a crime scene with an abused child at the centre of it. And people who paid for this stuff, or excused it as some kind of twisted ‘aesthetic’ of shock - people like Steve Albini - were creating the market for it.
By the time I moved on from child protection, kids worldwide were being abused to order, live online. That’s what ‘liking that sort of thing’ translates to.
Wow...
I had to view, catalog, and grade the severity of the child porn I caught people in possession of as I prepared cases for court. I can never un-see some of the things I saw then. So forgive me if I don’t practice the ironic distance needed to get the joke. In my professional experience people erotically aroused by child sexual abuse imagery remain aroused by it their whole lives, and seek it out their whole lives. Some escalate to actual in-person offending themselves, once they have become habituated to the milieu. They are fixated sexual offenders. Every picture a crime scene. As Maya Angelou put it in a different context: ‘When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”
And I say that as someone who has read, and enjoyed, in my own pretentious youth, Mishima, Lautreamont, Baudelaire, Poe, Hubert Selby Junior, William Burroughs, Kathy Acker, Poppy Z Brite, Valerie Solanos, George Bataille, Andre Gide, Jean Genet, the Marquis DeSade, Leopold Sacher -Masoch, Pauline Reage and others. I even regularly went to clubs where ‘blood play’ was a thing. At the height of the AIDS epidemic. For many people I knew, that didn’t age so well.
Not all transgression is hip.
He’s certainly a purveyor through Sotos’ work, there’s no misunderstanding there, no idea if he was a collector. He’s unreliable yet if he waves it away as a joke it’s taken as true? If a friend came to me and asked if I’d like to record and sit through hours of real life child abuse testimony ( to be edgy?) I’d probably call the police rather than agree to it.
There’s a lack of critical thinking with his history.
