Best Epub reader?

Title says it all. New to the activity (reading on iPad etc) but wondering if there's an app for this you use/like? Thanks much.

  • The free Apple Books app for me is great, I use it all the time. I use mainly with books bought from external shops, not the Apple book shop, and have had no problems. I use it on the iPhone and on the iPad, sometimes it needs time to sync between devices, but overall I'm happy.

  • Be certain of the title you wish to read, because there may be similar titles from opportunists that self-publish. They use tools to discover trending search terms about an author or title, proceed to use AI to write something up without fact checking anything, then publish. It’s legal.

Not sure if it reads epub, if I remember correctly, it's just PDF and TXT. But gotta recommend Goodreader. I load it up with iOS and hardware music manuals

Edit: no epub indeed. sorry

  • FBreader, used it for ever, multi platform and I’ve got a built it cloud library that’s hosted on Google drive which I’ve been building since more than a decade ago.It uploads to and then is accessible on every device that runs it, syncing bookmarks, notes, page you’re on etc…

  • Epubs can be converted to be read on a Kindle, if that's an option for you...

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Marvin always used to be the good one, it it was abandoned and is now gone from the App Store. I’ve seen good reports of Maple Reader, but haven’t got round to trying it yet.

  • Nothing wrong with the native ipad reader--Books. Works fine for me. Opens pdfs too.

  • Apple Books works just dandy..

What software are you using to do that?

Calibre, or send to your kindle email with convert in subject or use their bulk upload page. For Epub and other things on iPad https://apps.apple.com/us/app/readwise-reader/id1567599761 maybe overkill for some, but I need it for work research and like it for pleasure

  • Yes, Calibre.

    OK, thanks!

EDIT: just had a look and I've already downloaded it. Idiot!

There are various ways, but the Send to Kindle webpage works great. Will make available on all your Kindle devices and accounts. I'm not a big Amazon fan, but this feature works great. This webpage seems quite a bit easier to me than emailing to kindle address:

  • You don't need to use Calibre any more. Kindle started supporting epub like a year or two ago. I just upload directly into there. Super easy and convenient.

No sure if my Kindle can handle it. It is about 1,000 years old. But thanks for the info.

You learn something every day; thanks for this most useful bit.

  • @ Y'all.... Thanks so much, all I wanted and more here. My reading head thanks you!

  • I’ve been obsessively trying to find a replacement for Marvin, which I still use. “Best“ depends on your criteria. I like the advanced note and highlighting features, as well as the note export feature of Marvin.

So far, I am looking at BookFusion.

It baffles me that an excellent epub reader for power users is so elusive.

I did not realize Readwise accepts epubs. I have been avoiding the cost, but this might push me over the edge.

  • I'm using Readdle Documents for epubs too, it also has a very nice search function in case you need it, and allows for quick browsing through pages.
Make sure you adjust views and gestures to work to your liking, I do prefer the single page view with tapping on the left or right border to go to the previous or next page.

  • MapleRead is very good.

I’d not come across this one, I’ll have a look at it. Thank you!

    BookFusion, 100 bucks a year subscription - no thanks…

Some subscription prices are really really fantasy prices - often this apps is presenting the same features as everybody else, and, seems more like a fraud (I maybe have wrong here)…

For $100, I believe readwise has epubs.

Pro tip: the new free Eleven Labs Reader app accepts EPUBs. The voices are amazing. Inflection that is very human.

Oh, great tip, John, thank you. I LOVE text to speech, and eleven labs have some brilliant voices. Really surprised this is free, maybe they are planning to make money from the coming ability to use your own cloned voice to read these....
