I like Voice Dream Reader because of TTS though lately I’m using ElevenLabs reader more
Voice Dream Reader is a really thoughtfully designed app. Pity though that they switched to a massively overpriced subscription model. I bought it outright for $10 years before that. It is really not the kind of app that should involve a subscription, imo, definitely more a one-off purchase kind of app.
I don’t buy books online, so I only transfer files (epubs preferably, but also pdf) to ipad, via itunes, icloud, dropbox, whatever
My combo is transfer to Documents, as a repository, and then the epubs I want to really read comfortably and highlight, I share to iBooks. Documents can read epubs, but doesn’t compare to iBooks in that department.
I've tried many readers over the years, and iBooks has the best epub renderer I know of. Can even render embedded SVG. Only gripe I have is the TOC doesn’t collapse when multi level.
And of course you have to ignore all the BS they try to sell you, but as purely an epub reader iBooks excels, and it comes free
Yeah, too bad about the sub but at least they u-turned on their decision to force it on grandfathered users. But TBH I really mostly use the ElevenLabs reader because the AI TTS is so much better. But I feel like they’re gonna begin charging for it soon enough
Hey, man, yeah I wonder what their business plan is for the app, too. Considering that you’ve had issues with your eyes, I can see why it would be even more important to you. That said, I consume a lot of epubs via TTS. I am a longtime Voice Dream user, but the recent controversy has me gun shy about their future as well.
Also, face the ElevenLabs voices are so much better. They do tend to degrade when you speed them up, but the same as true for other text to speech voices and even human voices, and say a podcast.
Also the ElevenLabs app is pretty good at accepting webpages. Great for listening to long form news articles. They sound like a BBC story, right?
If in fact you still have vision issues I especially hope that you can continue to have easy access to high-quality voices. My wife does O&M and VI for the visually impaired, so I’m pretty familiar with the scene.
Me, too but as mentioned elsewhere, the better voices and the controversy have me using it a lot less. I really like Voice Dream integration with Pocket. Save an article to Pocket, and then listen to it in Voice Dream.
But, it’s hard to go back to those voices as well. I’m just waiting for ElevenLabs to drop the hammer on a subscription. The only other reader with high-quality voices is something like 160 per year or something like that.
I don’t want poop on the Books app, but as you pointed out, it’s hard to jump into your own library. In the same way you can observe in the Apple Music app, the user library is secondary. I’m actually OK with that in Apple Music, but I feel like the way people read books is different than how they use music. You don’t really need to pick up a song that you were listening to halfway through, but you definitely want it easy to jump into the various books that you’re reading.
You are right that it’s a rock solid pleasant, apple like experience when you’re reading. It just does what it’s supposed to do.
Eleven Labs Reader looks good but that’s quite a lot of tracking lol.
Try This

I was A Voice Dream Reader Fan But This One Is More Then Ebook Reader It’s A one time purchase also
Nice.
Though seems you can basically only use Apple voices? Microsoft and Open AI ones need some kind of API? In that case, the voices in that ElevenLabs app would be better, I don't think the Apple voices are that good.
Another thing I do to listen to text sometimes, btw, is to paste text into the website rentry.co in Microsoft Edge, then use Edge's "Read Aloud" function. The voices there are a mixed bag, but some are very good. I like the UK English one called Sonia. This is totally free, of course.
Speaking of drm, is there a way to remove it without using a desktop app? I hate being tied to using a purchased ebook in a particular app. Seems there used to be some online method, forget the name of the site, but that is deprecated and I can't find an alternative.
I’ll say this again: apple ibooks has a pretty good epub renderer. For anything else it’s utter crap. Store your books in documents by readdle. Share from there to ibooks if you want a more comfortable reader. Use calibre (needs a desktop) to convert from lesser formats like mobi or az3. There, all problems solved
I used to use Moon Reader+ during Android days, so when I switched back to iOS, I went for Kybook 3.

It is the most feature full app, I have found and the Pro version to get rid of ads (that only display in shelf view) was just for 5 bucks. My favorite feature on top of everything else is the Content Server. It launches an FTP server and you can connect to it through Wi-fi to rapidly create/update/delete folders and books to your iOS devices.
Books.
And libgen.rs
I'm a long time Calibre user. It will do everything you need. Can even remove DRM if you get the right plug-ins but doesn't sound like you need that....
Yes, auto syncing is exclusive to developer's service but you can manually move stuff to iCloud and open from there and it will create local caches for everything. Maybe, it requires the Pro version, I don't know. For what it's worth, I am able to copy or move the books to iCloud from the app itself. I can probably open any books I placed on the iCloud as well but haven't tested yet since I am mainly a Windows user.
The feature list is on the website here http://kybook-reader.com/
Also, it has not been updated for a while now, I think. It does work fine on my iPhone and iPad though.
Let me know if you need help cause I use it all the time and will be happy to lend a hand
That's the one.
Shhh, don’t say it out loud.
Libgen is a godsend, and has been around for many years, but like every other good thing it will come to an end eventually. They have been trying to bring it down for years (thankfully unsuccessfully so far).
