Logic big update: chromaglow vs nam/guitarml and does drummer now have round robins

edited May 16 in Logic Pro

So there’s been a huge update across both Mac and iOS

Has anyone tried it? Session bassists new drummers supposedly more advanced ai— really curious about this and if the drums now have round robins

Stemsplitter

And ChromaGlow, a saturation unit that supposedly models non linear dream anologue hardware. I’m wondering if anyone knows about how this compares to nam of guitarml compatible hardware instances discussed on here and also, which equipment chromaglow is based on as it’s meant to be based on legendary gear. Was particularly interested as it specifically says models non linearities.

I’ve tried it. While it seems like cheating, the new session players function is really cool. That’s my only big observation so far - I’m only just getting into it and it’s my first experience of the iPad version. Still learning the interface. I’ve used the Mac version a fair bit in the past.

What we often forget is that THIS all shit is cheating!

What I mean is that iPads computers or other electronic devices is cheating against the real world of acoustic intruments, like guitar pianos or drums…

So, everything must be up to everyone to decide, will we cheat or not/

I will gladly cheat if the end results is very near the true real stuff…

  • I look at it like this. We all can input notes and make jams, but it’s the sound and the vibe you creat is what is important. Burial for instance, he wasn’t playing crazy jazz chords or making beats that sounded like Steve Gadd. It was his sound that made him what he is now. Same with so many other electronic artists. A 12 year old could make beats with a iPad or any mpc, Ableton etc and yeah it may sound really good, but does he have his own sound? Will people be able to listen to him and know it’s him by his sound?
Nothing in Logic or any other Daw is going to make you a good producer. Only your creativity is going to bring you there. AI isn’t going to do shit for anyone. You are the one that will do it and only you. AI can help you make cool riffs or chord changes but who cares, we could do that before with all the apps we already have. Logic and all these new stepping stones will only help you get a little motivation which is not a bad thing. Just my two cents.

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

Not really. Recording yourself playing an acoustic instrument, or plying a synth is not remotely comparable to getting ai to play music for you. I guess someone with no musical ability might say so inorder to obfuscate that but I can’t think of any other reason.

It’s like saying eating a sandwich is the same thing as cannibalising the family that live next door.

Anyway. I don’t mind bass drums and am not arguing against it as it’s not songwriting it’s a rhythm section, but if someone writes dance music that is beat based then they aren’t writing music anymore (questionable if they were anyway 👀)

There’s a relationship between the quality of end result and how it’s done.

Erroneous is when something is incorrect and your eye roll inducing reply is why I deleted it and proving it was correct. I’m sorry your lack of musical ability meant it hit a nerve. X :D

It’s absolutely fine not to be a composer or a musician. You really don’t need to feel bad, or lash out about it. It’s just we can’t all be everything and that sense of entitlement looks a bit silly when someone who can’t play instruments or compose claims they can because they hit randomise. It doesn’t take much humility not to lie

As I said, I’m not a drummer, so I use ai drums or build a beat.

  • I’m pretty sure @jwmmakerofmusic is an accomplished piano player, so maybe this argument is out of line.

Why not stick to talking about software rather than taking pot shots at people?

Why not read before commenting? I was the one attacked. I didn’t take pot shots at anyone. I literally responded to previous posts which were discussing whether or not using ai musicians was ‘cheating’ and which were actually most of the posts on a thread I started asking specific questions about logic.

The poster you mention, who I now have on ignore, chose to tell me to go on YouTube rather than addressing the questions I asked. They’re not discussed on YouTube

    I responded politely.

He got his knickers in a twist and made an unnecessary, threatened and patronising comment about a post I made in reply to all the other posts here, re using ai musicians. I had even deleted that post because I knew some producer/EDM guy would have a tantrum and I just couldn’t be bothered having to listen to it. So he responded to my having deleted the post just to attack me, incorrectly.

My argument isn’t out of line, his initial comment was. I’ve seen him make loads of posts about dance music etc and exactly what I was talking about so I know what triggered him.

It’s not unreasonable to reply to a load of people talking about ai and cheating by saying that if you use a bass ai you and call yourself a bass player you are a fraud. But if you don’t call yourself a bass player and use it you are not. The issue is just what you call yourself, it’s fine to do what you like otherwise. Just take it in the chin when yiu get described as what you are.

Just got the hump because he did what I was saying, so tough really.

And it's out of line, because @jwmmakerofmusic is a "real" musician according to your definition. He plays the piano, professionally I believe, so I would say your comment was made out of ignorance and is out of line.

Also I read your original post, and it didn't include the specific questions you mention, it was edited hours later to add those. Ask a vague question, don't be surprised with a vague answer.

but finally, even if you don't like a specific genre of music, like EDM, why insult the practitioners? You assume (wrongly in this case) that they're not real musicians, but the truth is you don't like or understand the genre. I'm a guitarist and singer, does that give me the right to insult people who make other forms of music? NO.

That part wasn’t out of line whatsoever, it was just mistaken in terms of him playing the piano. Out of line implies morally wrong, not inaccurate. The guy was abusing me over a really simple post that obviously threatened him. I had even deleted the fucking post and he was responding to my deletion. I think given the enormous tantrum he had it’s an understandable mistake because it’s such an odd reaction,

I now know it was because I mentioned dance music.

If I edited my original post it was shortly after posting - and none of that is the problem here as you know. Maybe it was hours but I edited it as soon as I thought I actually want to know about these specific things - o thought that was a few minutes later.

Stop being so irrational and disingenuous. I made a post stating the fact that if you say you play an instrument and you don’t you are a fraud. I even said it might be ok to be a fraud, but it is a fact.

At the very end in parenthesis I made a joke of about 6 words about dance music. I literally said if you make dance music it’s questionable anyway with an emoji of eyes so pretty obvious it was a joke. That. Was. It. And I deleted it. Absolutely bonkers reaction

If someone came back and took the piss out of people making guitar music it would have been funny and fine. What’s not normal is having a HUGE and embarrassing online tantrum, becoming abusive as the really weird person in question did.

Since you’ve made a lot of assumptions, all incorrect about me and what I said and what I did I’ll go into it. Many many producers and people in EDM do use generative tools, and are far less musically competent than in other genres. Many are not. So I was taking the piss but there was some truth to it.

R n b — much of the industry relies on ‘boards’ of songwriters and producers and things being farmed out to create a product rather than coming from anywhere real. I will also take the piss out of that.

I’ve made tons of dance music and been around it enough thanks, to know how composition occurs collectively in general. I don’t hold any snobbish views about it but I’m going to take the piss where it’s merited. Yiu know nothing about me and have yourself made the incorrect assumptions.

This should have been a short exchange, what people now call banter if someone didn’t have such a]ridiculous personal problems. Genuinely pathetic.

Richard and Jim dont deserve any of that type of treatment, and in fact, they are both some of the most respectful and respected talents here. This is why many of us felt negativity has gotten out of hand here.

Making ableist comments towards Jim is something that happened before and I think a precedent should be set immediately ….

It’s just we can’t all be everything and that sense of entitlement looks a bit silly when someone who can’t play instruments or compose claims they can because they hit randomise. It doesn’t take much humility not to lie

As I said, I’m not a drummer, so I use ai drums or build a beat.

You just got triggered by the dance music jibe

Not only am I an accomplished pianist as @richardyot kindly pointed out, I also create music on my own. Try again you utter pompous waste of space. Maybe pay attention next time I post something, moron.

I’m pretty sure @jwmmakerofmusic is an accomplished piano player, so maybe this argument is out of line.

Why not stick to talking about software rather than taking pot shots at people?

I agree with this 90%, except when firing back. The fact the obvious needs to be pointed out to @wingwizard is sad and pathetic.

I thing this WingWizard sounds more and more like the beloved BerlinFX user that tragically was remove from this forum way back…

Richard and Jim dont deserve any of that type of treatment, and in fact, they are both some of the most respectful and respected talents here. This is why many of us felt negativity has gotten out of hand here.

Making ableist comments towards Jim is something that happened before and I think a precedent should be set immediately ….

Right, I’m not having this. Respectful… he made a patronising post about a tiny joke about dance music I deleted. He then called me a pompous waste of space, sad pathetic and a moron.

I have not made any ableist post and I take major issue with that

I have three degenerative disabilities. Sibo, severe allergic asthma, and severe neuralgia. I can’t even fucking sit. I can’t leave the house and have only done so for hospital appointments in the last four years. I had fifty asthma attacks and almost died many times in 2021. Every day is about trying to be able to breathe. I’m just about getting fucking by, I live in permanent extreme burning pain from my nerves and spent my whole day trying to cope on neuropathic painkillers pregabalin and meds, doing stretches. I haven’t slept before 5 am due to pain in months.

The guy went absolutely mental, and abused me and got what he deserved. I questioned if he has emotional dysregulation/tourettes because that’s exactly how he’s behaving. It’s not remotely ableist. Im not slinging that about - I had a gf with BPD for 2 years and have my own experiences with mental health.

Don’t be abusive if you don’t want to be called out on it and get a reaction. If it’s been said before perhaps there’s a reason for that.

Perhaps calling someone a waste of space for no reason when you know fuckall about what their life is like should receive a precedent.

You have a reason to be upset for being called a waste of space - but bringing someone’s disability into the ring is a foul (especially if you are aware of that/others having disabilities).

This is what started the whole thing. It wasn't the "dance music jibe". It was me making a mild comment and then him claiming I'm not a composer or a musician when that is my JOB, not my hobby. And honestly he's the one with a sense of pompous entitlement in the first place who kept saying people who use AI are not real musicians before he edited that tirade into "nvm".

And he continued to claim and snidely suggest that I'm not a real songwriter and musician when the proof is on my SoundCloud page, all written and produced by me , with AI only being used to master my tracks in Logic Pro. And regarding Tourette's, I don't have that condition. I'm blunt. Looks like he "knows f-all about my life" as well, but unlike me who's open to learning about people, he couldn't care less to understand facts about me and continues to claim I'm a subpar musician or lack thereof.

So what does that tell everyone about him?

I'm sorry for the "waste of space" comment, but I'm not sorry for the remarks about him being "pompous".
