iPad as a Portastudio / Multi Track Recorder

Hi everyone :) during the weekend i worked with a Tascam Portastudio and i found that was very easy to record and produce music, without all this "put some effects, plugins, EQs and stuff" and just focus in the recoding process.

Almost 5 or 6 years having iOS as my main music world but still difficult to me to arrange songs, specially with AUM or do some proper mixing.
I have Cubasis and Garageband but still i don't feel like DAW as a comfort place to edit/arrange (at least in iPad).

Anyone have some template or idea to create something similar as a PortaStudio to record and listen instantly?
I was trying with 4Pockets Neon with individual tracks + master track.

For me what works on that matter is Audio Evolution Mobile

Other options: 4Pockets Multitrack Recorder (within AUM or Audiobus generally) or Loopy Pro (standalone)

    Edit:
    Ranking my options
    1) 4Pockets Multitrack Recorder
    2) AEM
    3) Loopy Pro

+1 to 4pockets multitrack for this type of approach. Keeping it VERY simple via AUM is the closest I’ve found to a portastudio workflow. & even still you get tremendous advantages via Multitrack recorder, compared to working with cassette tape. (Count-ins, metronome, copy/cut/paste, snap to grid for audio moving, powerful eq, delay & reverb on each track if you wanna, etc)

  • This is how I used to think of Auria when I used it a lot

  • I think objective discipline is the thing.
When writing or “tracking”, just do that.
Or you will be overwhelmed with all the “creative options” a DAW gives you.

That was my first thought too. It has all the plugin distractions, but they're easy to ignore.
Then I read about the OP using Neon and that seemed like it might be simpler (though I haven't tried that).

So true. Maybe I should put it as my #1 option
Since getting it I feel like I went back to the old days working with tapes or even digital 4-track. Pretty straightforward

  • I still use my Tascam 4 track a bit. It’s pretty different to the iPad and worth getting one in good shape.

  • Thanks a lot for the comments.

Yes, i already tried 4pockets Multitrack and i have Multitrack DAW, too.

Maybe it's just discipline and get to know my workflow (?).

I will try 4pockets Multitrack one last time, but i didn't get good results, maybe was a bit buggy or "complicated" to use.

  • Is that tascam portastudio app still available? I don’t know if they kept up with it or not.

If you've got a song with a set structure, it seems this is a pretty easy way to lay down a rough. Also, Is this a dream I had? Multitrack doesn't have warp markers, right? Does it have easy comping?

    Utterly.

For sure 4pockets multi-track doesn’t have warping or comping.
But I meant one can move clips of audio on a beat grid (or not) - which is such an editing luxury compared to cassette 4 tracking.

  • I didn't think so, but Paul, the 4Pockets developer, seems to be one of those guys who lives to cross off to-do lists, so if any app were to have warp markers, why not his!?

There are warp markers in neon.

You find a Portastudio easier to edit and arrange than GarageBand?

A live loop/clip matrix like Ableton, Bitwig (both desktop), Logic, Drambo or Loopy Pro have could do the trick I think.

With those you can try out different arrangements and combinations and work out song sections without having to push squares around on a timeline. With midi controller mapped to the tracks you could then jam out an arrangement in real time and record it.

    Nah, hasn’t worked for years.

    Couple of other suggestions

    https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/roland-zentracker/id1582634903

And Amplitube has a recorder built in.

  • I use GarageBand in the same way I used a Fostex or Tascam back in the day. I don’t miss recording to cassettes.

not to edit, but maybe to arrange...yes.

thanks for all comments :) will try workflows today

I don't see how? If you record with a Portastudio the arrangement needs to be worked out in advance. You could of course take that approach with GarageBand as well, but it will also give you the option to make changes to the arrangement if you wish.

Working with a Portastudio is pretty inflexible in comparison IMO.

  • A few months ago I found my old Tascam 424 and some cassettes, brought it down from the attic and cleaned it up a bit and fired it up, wiped a cassette, which had some early 90s wildtrack recording of a Radio 1 show, so I recorded that through a Tascam U-100 to my Raspberry Pi 400 into Audacity first, then wiped the tape by recording nothing a few times

I did the demagnetising of the heads and metal bits, as I had left the demagnetiser in the carrier bag with the portastudio all this time

After that I tried recording a simple thing and packed it all up because it took up too much space on my desk – I’ll come back to it another day

Do you use Song Sections in Garageband to re-arrange the sections of your song?

  • Multitrack Studio for ipad is best for this I think, you can add effects etc if you need to of course, and arrange too, but I come back to this as the only DAW on ipad I use, if ever. I really like the audio scrubbing it has, which makes it feel similar to working with tape.

These days I would actually choose my Surface over my iPad for this because I have so many more options with that.

  • Not ios, but this looks very interesting:

  • I find Audio Evolution very straightforward for linear multitrack recording, and when you need the editing tools, they're there.

    thanks everybody :)

i guess i will split my workflow in 2.

1.-AUM to Neon Audio for stems
2.- then Multitrack DAW for arrange stems and maybe recording something else (i just saw that i can load AUv3 there).

I don't want to leave AUM but the last option would be 100% inside Multitrack DAW.

There's a way to connect AUM tracks to Multitrack DAW? (not Audiobus, plz)

I’m an old portastudio person too. I’ve settled on MultkTrackStudio. If doing just some MIDI stuff, MIDI Tape Recorder is a nice simple 4-track midi recorder for AUM. You can stack them if you want to expand tracks, but can’t edit the MIDI data. You can edit MIDI in MultiTrackStudio.

I'm curious what Neon adds to the process when you can record directly in AUM?

2.- then Multitrack DAW for arrange stems and maybe recording something else (i just saw that i can load AUv3 there).

Yes, you can do this, though personally I see it as more hassle than simply importing tracks after recording directly in AUM.

    • Start AUM.
    • Add a track in MTD.
    • Press the FX button on the track and select Audio.
    • Tap the Microphone icon, then scroll way down to find AUM under Inter-App Audio. In the sub menu you'll see AUM (Port) 1-8 as available track inputs.
    • Tap the Arm button for the track, which will cause an AUM icon to appear.
    • Tap the AUM icon to switch over to it.
    • Tap the output for the AUM track you want to direct to MTD, then IAA / Audiobus Output and the MTD output you should see there.
    • Repeat for other outputs.
    • You can save the AUM session for what is in there, but it will not save anything having to do with MTD and vice-versa.

You'll have to experiment with how best to save and restore work in progress since neither of the apps saves state for the other. That is, if you don't just shrug and decide it's not worth the hassle. 😉

Damn! I totally forgot about that one. Good call. 👍🏼
I dunno how well it works, but it sure is ticks a lot of boxes of the OP.
