«Are You Done?» a cathartic track (stoner/post rock)
This track has been sleeping on my iPad for months... It is finally time to get rid of it so I can start sharing finer work I have been working on since the beginning of this year.
It is special in the sense it is the first time i worked on lyrics with my dear friend @richardyot , who suggested a few changes here and there.
I don’t exactly like it or to be more accurate, I don't like the memories this brings to me, but I am sharing it here because I think all the guitars are good both in terms of sound and performances. I especially think the outro contains some of the best polyrhythm/polymeter guitar work I have done to date.
So if you're a guitar lover, enjoy Stoner Rock à la QOTSA, or enjoy those Post Rock sonic explosion grand finale, there might be something for you here.
As to comment on the content of the lyrics, all I can think of is this: The level of intelligence of a group is most of the time inversely proportional to the number of people making up the group in question. If that’s not enough, take a look at the ugly artwork 😜
As usual, entirely produced on iPad.
Lyrics in the spoiler
Screaming out loud, fake agony
While your mind is up there in the canopy
No you're not this anomaly
It's just the way you see
Just the way you see
Stab me in the back with insanity
The rule of the pack, for your vanity
Don't expect an apology
It's a fallacy
It's a fallacy
Is it over?
Are you done?
Stick to the ones who really see
What's inside your mind with clarity
No matter those around who won't agree
Just leave them be
Yeah leave them be
No time for hostility
No time for hypocrisy
Be the man you wanna be
Be the man you wanna be
Honestly
Looking for attention desperately
twisting my words shamelessly
No, I was not your enemy
It's just the way you see
Just the way you see
Stab me in the back without empathy
Summoning a mob for your scammony
Does it taste like a victory
Or an eulogy
Or an eulogy
Is it over?
Are you done?
Stick to the ones who really see
What's inside your mind with clarity
No matter those around who won't agree
Just leave them be
Yeah leave them be
No time for hostility
No time for hypocrisy
Be the man you wanna be
Be the man you wanna be
Honestly

that grand finale was a real treat! nice job.
I like this very much. I especially like the chord changes at around :50 that you use throughout the song. Vocals harmonies are excellent. I didn’t read the spoiler, but I tend to hear lyrics as part of the whole package. Not sure why you don’t like this. Brings back nice memories of Chicago clubbing in the 80s.
I don’t get high anymore, but I still think stoned thoughts.
Man, this is pretty good. Reading and listening to the lyrics, seems like you definitely needed to get something off your chest. Hopefully this helped, and of course I love this type of Rock.
Has quite a 90s vibe to it to my ears, with seemingly a lot of different influences thrown in.
Very well arranged and played, and the vocal is spot on.
I’m in agreement with @michael_m , I’m hearing a bit of the 90s. I’m not sure what qualifies as “stoner rock/ post rock”but if this is what it sounds like, I like it.
Dude great piece of music here!
Your songwriting and production is really coming into its own as a very unique creative voice.
I suspect having Richard to bounce ideas off of and gain support for anything you’re not sure of is helpful.
A lot to like here ❤️
First of all it’s a great song, I love the vocal melody, and the lead guitar parts throughout are really interesting.
The vocals are great, as is the arrangement which is interesting and unconventional, and finally the bass which is pulsing under it all is also very well done.
Great job all around.
It’s a fine way to get “rid of it” on certain tracks, I need to learn this from you. I can safely say that you rock and tremble in this virtual forum space, helping to clean up recent piles of dust. Your voice and applied FX go perfectly with the lyrics, and everything screams with passion without needing to go over the top. It’s brilliant!
BTW, in that cover art, whose “head” is going to fall? Hypocrisy, hostility?! Artwork clearly sends the message. Done deal.
Really good. Love the "is it over" chorus. Properly good. Great song and great production too. Single material not album filler!
Grabs you from that first chord progression.
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you for listening!
Thank you for listening ! It's not I don't like the music in itself, it's the memory of the feelings I had that led me to make it. These days, I don't get stoned either but just like you stoned thoughts never left me 😉
Music can be a great way to rid oneself of negative thoughts, obsessions and fears. Look at David Bowie's body of work, for example.
What can I say. It is just great.
Thank you for taking the time to listen, Jim. Music has so many virtues!
Thank you for all the nice words and constant support, Chris! You rule!
@JanKun ,
Super chanson.
Le refrain est super accrocheur.
Belle suite d’accords.
Les guitares sont super bien arrangées.
Bravo.
It most certainly does. It's great for expressing any emotion. Most of my tracks can sometimes come off as sappy, sentimental, happy, and positive. I am usually a positive person these days, so it reflects in my music.
However, there was a point 3 months ago where I was disillusioned with religion. I expressed that with two "angry" tracks - "Wicked Lies" (about a then friend whose religion dictates certain backwards beliefs about certain demographics), and "Va Te" (which is basically what anyone can go and do with their religion. 🤭 Sorry if that's a bit controversial, lol).
Then again, music can also express sorrow. For instance, the last track of my "Some Sort of Title Goes Here" EP called "Farewell, My Friend" was an ode to the OP-1 Field I used to own but sold to make financial ends meet. 😮💨 (I made three EPs with my OP-1 Field, and I know I miss it quite a lot.)
So yes, I'm with you mate. Music has many virtues, can express many emotions, and is definitely a language all of its own with many dialects (dialects = musical traditions). The main musical dialect seems to be rooted in Western Classical Music, but it isn't the only dialect of music that exists on this planet.
Thank you for listening and for the kind words, Michael, I am glad you liked it ! I was a teenager in the 90s, definitely makes sense !
Very cool track. Definitely has the vibe of Queens of the Stone Age, especially from the "like clockwork" era. Cool main melody, after a few listens today it stuck in my head on my bike ride.
Yeah, everything said above. You say gallows but it’s a guillotine. Very cutting and French of you, my friend. They may be rolling some out here in 2025 if things go badly.
Sounds great.
Thank you for listening!
I understood that you have been through hard times . Hoping it is getting better.
Thank you for the kind word, glad your enjoyed !
@JanKun let’s start with the outro - yes, those guitars are something else. Quite excellent! I’m never sure what post-rock means (perhaps I should google it), but this is a hugely enjoyable and ahem, well executed song.
This is awesome iPad music. I don't want to rub anyone the wrong way but I think music like this can really bring iPad as a serious platform to the masses.
Thank you @McD, your comments are always appreciated !
I feel like a lucky bastard to be part of the small ABF creation community. I had the chance the collaborate with so many great creators in so many genres and styles (this include you of course). I cherish every single of those creative interactions cause they helped me and still help me to grow and hopefully to get better time after time. We're living dark digital times and people tend to turn in on themselves. More than ever, we need to gather together, even in creation.
Haven't forgotten our idea of a Staffpad orchestral "Cadavre Exquis". I'll send you something soon !
Merci mon ami ! Very surprised by the warm welcome for this one. I was not very sure about sharing it for reason you clearly know, but had to since you contributed to the lyrics. Should we include it to our coming album ?
When you send it please explain the “rules” of this collaboration or declare the absence of rules.
I looked into the classic “Exquisite Corpse” scheme and it seemed better suited to prose:
I’m curious to see how you imagine something similar for a notated musical composition:
I probably own every Staffpad Library you own by now… I keep adding. I’m might be missing a few SpitFire libs. Of course, we could stick with Muse Sounds so anyone with StaffPad can play too.
Thank you Goran! So many kind words!
Regarding the cover definitely both. But it could also be anybody's head too. These days online bashing looks a bit like public execution, don't you think?
