Modern FM app?
FM4 isn’t in the AppStore anymore, and other DX7 emulations are a pain of usability.
What are the best modern iOS alternatives for doing powerful Frequency Modulation Synthesis, with at least 4 operators, operators feedback, some effects, modulation by velocity, etc (mostly what FM4 did).
NFM is nice but its features and the focus is gonna transition to Mela 5, so I’d rather invest in something else. (I already have Mela3)
I have Aparillo from SugarBytes and is a beast, but it only has 2 operators and the emphasis isn’t in FM but rather the whole LFO modulation; hence not much traditional as FM design.
FRMS also does FM but again the FM isn’t the main focus hence the interface isn’t the most versatile for that use.
What is the successor of FM4? What do you use for FM(PM) ?

Nambu isn't just a great FM synth, it's just a wonderful synth. I love programming it, even though it has complexity - well organised complexity.
I would recommend Nambu even if you use another FM synth.
Still loving NFM for sound design.
Should it be discontinued at some point, I'll switch to KQ Dixie. Not as quick for editing as NFM but by that time, I'll hopefully have created enough FM patches 😄
For layering FM sounds and quick preview of DX7 sysex banks, KQ Dixie does a great job.
And phase distortion is similar to FM, but doesn’t produce identical results.

I’m no FM expert, although i always loved the sound. I’m not in the math side of it (for now!).
Some apps’ UI looks extremely complex (and I suppose are extremely powerful) and probably don’t fit my (rather simple) use.
FM4 was the best UI, simple, immediate, all in one screen; but I didn’t manage to get it in time before appstore removal.
KQ Dixie seems cool but not “modern” or, at least, i get lost in the interface.
At cold impression, seems like the best UI was FM4, followed by NFM, followed by Nambu.
Nambu is on the radar; still evaluating whether it will fit me and if spending the 20 bucks it costs.
But yeah, it seems amazing!
Aaaaannd sorry for the repetition, I found out this thread just now (together with AppRaven pert-type collections; lovely work @necrobyte !)

Bram Bos Phasemaker is easy to use.
I’m checking also apeSoft Mood, i didn’t know it.
Seems pretty nice, although the FM part doesn’t seem to be the main focus and it’s not clear from screenshots hire many operators it has and how to manage algorithms.
OK, so I am not an expert on FM, but ID700 is missing here. Worth a look, though.
@Pictor UI wise, I find NFM to be the best because of its quick, free routing between operators and feedback possible on any operator.
FM4 looked better, had more waveforms to choose from but it had a limited choice of algorithms and only 4 operators. I agree that it was fun to tweak though, as was thor by propellerheads.
Is Bleass Omega a decent 4op FM synth?
Omega is great, IMHO. I’m a fan of the Bleass interfaces and it lends itself well to FM. The approach is probably more OpSix than DX7, though, in case you’re looking for something a little more “purist”.
+1
I think it checks a lot of boxes based on the OP.
Most of these mentioned, but….
FM 7 IAP in Tera Pro, there are many types of synthesis in TP, so not strictly FM
Nambu, but mentioned above, same as TP, there is so much more going on than FM
ID700 - modern FM but quite unique, slight learning curve at least for me
KQ Dixie - as mentioned above, not quite the modern interface, but great FM
Phasemaker - modern FM
NFM - modern FM synth
Phase Monkey - modern FM
Phase 84 - modern FM
Can I throw Stringlab into the mix without overcomplicating things? I know it’s not FM, but ‘digital modelling’, it can do very FM like tones in many ways, but yeah probably overcomplicating the synth list lol. Yeah you know I will be adding the bell like tones from RingsFX next lol
Yamaha FM Essential if you don’t mind going to a music store to unlock it every time you get a new device
Drambo is great for FM of course, but specifically the Nambu re-creation on Patchstorage called "Drambu" is excellent and MPE friendly as opposed to actual Nambu.
Nambu = Opsix for iOS.
KQ Dixie for classic dx7 vibes.
Tera Pro has a FM section IAP : “ FM7 “- full Dx7 compatability I believe (don’t own it yet)
Tera Pro's FM module bridges the gap between hardcore FM programming and more friendly and performance and playing orientation with it's simplified "macro" controls (which were the only ones it had when it first released).
for me FM oscillator in Butter Synth works best…
I'm waiting for a Butter Synth deal since a while
I have Tera Synth, not Tera Pro; I see it has some FM but I still have to figure it out; iirc it has less control on FM algorithms, respect to Tera Pro.
Thanks for the video.
I also have Drambo but don't use it much yet; I'll try that Drambu patch, thanks for the hint!
I'm sure Drambo is the superstar I'm neglecting since too long
I took Phasemaker, for the price is a steal, and it's pretty nice; there's quite some views-switching going on required to access knobs around, but still a good experience and interesting results with sounds; amazing number of different FM algorithms.
Seems a good one to start with, I'll keep experimenting with it, and also vet the other great suggestions, thank you everybody
Nobody mentioned Cubasis Neo Fm. I know its inside a daw.
I cannot vouch for it because for one I don’t own it and two I don’t like FM synths.
Has everybody forgotten about Sunvox? It doesn’t get the mentions it used to, it used to be the answer to almost every question and every thread
Drambo took over 😉
There is an old post on here called Phasemaker Preset Sharing. I posted some presets on there and I think they are still available. You do need to watch out for playing them with too high velocity slider settings as some of them distort if you do. Some need the odd tweaking depending on how you play them.
Maybe there should be a patch-off contest – Drambo vs Sunvox (not sure how it’d have scoring) – any of the major influencers up for it?
Perhaps miRack as well 😄
