Your most underutilised apps
Just interested in what apps you’ve bought, know are wonderful, but also know you under utilise them. Which apps and why?
Drambo: I just know this is probably one of the best apps available on iOS. I just can’t seem to gather up the energy needed to learn it. I’m essentially lazy and grab apps that are simple and to the point. I know I’m missing out.
Scaler 2: like above, I can just feel the power oozing from this app, but also like above, I’ve been far too lazy to learn how to use it beyond some minor experiments - shame on me!
Chordjam, Playbeat3 etc: bought most of their apps as a pack and did the usual played around with them for a few days, then left them to gather digital dust! Maybe it’s the squinting to see some of the controls, but maybe it’s again the fear of putting in the effort to learn them. I again reach for simpler options that do less, or at least search for simpler options.
Riffler and Riffler Flow: I have no skills with guitar at all, so these should be right up my street. They are not that complex, so that can’t be the reason I rarely use them…really don’t know why I just don’t seem to bother with these, maybe I’m just a synth head at heart? lol.
Iceworks fx apps: I love Iceworks synths. Nambu is a masterpiece imo and I would pay good money for a well designed hardware version! The fx apps though just baffle me. I can barely work out what’s happening or have little idea what twiddling the knobs actually do on some of them and end up grabbing Other Desert Cities or the like. Again I know it’s my failing and not the apps!
Please tell me some of your dust gathering wonderful apps and why you think you ignore them at times. Remember, apps have feelings too! lol.

Garageband! 😅
Yep. That was my immediate first thought.
It makes no sense that I just. Can’t. Get. Myself. To use it.
The apps in the Unfiltered Audio bundle. I'm just starting to use Silo and Tails more frequently now since I have a more powerful iPad.
Initially it was quite a CPU hog on my last iPad, this and the dense UIs (and terrible UX of the preset browser) always lead me towards other simpler apps for distortion and lofi effects.
I missed those on the last sale. I went from a iPad Air 2 to an Air with M1 chip and wow what a change!
I switched from an Air 2 to a 9th gen, also quite a big jump in singlecore apps.
Drambo for sure. Bought it in a sale after reading about it here, have opened it a couple of times, scratched my head and closed it again. Laziness, coupled with a general sense that it’s not my cup of tea.
@kirmesteggno I agree on the UA apps, though I’ve been using Bass-Mint a lot more lately. Similarly, they were too resource intensive on my old iPad, but on my M2 there are no such problems.
I’ve tended to underuse sample based apps because my old iPad was perpetually running low on storage, and I’m therefore not very used to sample based techniques. That’s beginning to change now I have more storage, and I keep meaning to do some field recordings, if the rain here would stop for long enough… AudioThing Noises in particular should be getting more use in future, Async sampler likewise.
iVCS3, Model 15 and ID700 are also underused - I could really do with delving a lot deeper into them.
Having gone from 64gb to 256gb internal storage, I still have issues with sample based apps. Not quite so bad in having to delete loads, but I do still look at the storage used and wonder if some of these large libraries are really worth the space they take for the amount I actually use them. Eventually I think I will probably go the SWAM route which should be able to help me drop some of the large orchestral libraries. I know people keep telling me about external storage, but I like to keep my iPad as portable as possible when not connected at home.
Model 15 I only use like a rompler and I’ve not bought ID700…..yet…..as for iVCS3, I simply don’t use it because the main synth is not AUv3, unless it’s been updated and I’ve missed it?
For me, also, Drambo!
I know how powerful Drambo is, but, perhaps I’m a Timeline-guy…
Also, Nave and Twin3 - two wonderful apps that sounds incredible, but very advanced and perhaps too much for my limited mind…
I never regret buying this apps!
I regret the odd app now and again, but only for a second or two before…..
Absolutely Love Twin 3! Once you get the modulation connections, it’s such an easy app to make sounds with. Even just tweaking the presets will get you far, as it’s one of those synths that seems to ‘just sound good!’
Could a well structured course covering the style music you're into change your mind?
I probably got the hang of Drambo somewhat because the modular aspects of it are quite similar to using Ableton devices and racks and because I have some experience with other samplers. recording and the lack of plugin delay compensation are the main reasons why I'm not using it as my main DAW anymore. But I still use it as an FX plugin and as a Sequencer/LFO (wavetable LFOs are killer).
I use Klevgrands Fosfat and/or Knorr instead of BassMint to add more bass to existing sounds or to change the bass tone. Found them much more straight forward and effective somehow.
So you're using Noises as a database for your own recorded textures, interesting. I have to get into field recording at some point, currently observing the market for Sonicpresence mics.
For me, the trick to get into Drambo was to avoid the rack building aspects at the beginning because it was so overwhelming. I just used my existing AuV3 synths and FX to become acquainted with the track structures and audio/MIDI routings first. I started by making a simple song using only 4 tracks and the concepts clicked pretty quickly.
I still don't build my own instruments or FX, but I am now using Drambo to live sequence, process and mix my hardware modular and it has been absolutely fantastic for this purpose. It's not necessary to know or use every feature at the beginning.
Just put aside an hour and dive in. You'll be glad you did.
I got a 1TB when I updated, which is great, but then I’ve had to update my iCloud storage to take the backups, which just adds to the craziness.
iVCS3 main synth is AUv3, but weirdly it’s not grouped in AUM with the other bits. It’s been that way for as long as I’ve owned it, so three years or more. It’s grouped with any other Apesoft apps (and called VCS3 - NB no i), whereas the other plugins are grouped under IVCS3. 🤷♂️
Probably not at this point. I’m part way through another course and haven’t been able to concentrate enough on that to complete it due to some health worries. TBH Drambo seems to be more of a groove box, and AUM/MiRack seem to be more my kind of thing. I’ll probably get to it at some point.
Well, that’s the plan. So far I’ve made all of two banks for Noises! 🤣
I’m equipped with the Sennheiser binaural headphones/mics, just need to get out somewhere with some interesting sounds. Currently here it’s either rain or traffic!
If I had to name one it would be Drambo. Great app I know, much respected, and I did put time and effort into learning it. My songs are linear and it doesn’t help me make the music I understand.
Almost all of them
Well, you learn something new every day! I did not know that the full synth was AUv3 now. I’ve been wasting time not using that lol
90% of the apps I bought are underutilized. This is mainly due to the fact that it took me some time (and still takes...) to find my way around iPad music making in a hybrid environment. And to see what works best for my workflow.
Scaler 2 for it's complexity, and the Audiomodern apps for their (for me) difficult user interface design are definitely amongst those underused ones. Because I am mainly a short sighted live jammer, apps that are too complex or cram too many controls on the iPad screen are gathering dust. In contrast Drambo is part of my iPad music staple diet.
Yep can totally understand the sight issues with iOS music making. As I’ve got older I am really struggling with some apps. I find some of the colour schemes make my head pains come on too!
What's wild is Drambo is once again the most mentioned app on this forum, whether touted as the "one-all be-all" solution , or "that app I just can't get on with". 😂 In other words, it's still popular somehow.
Yeah, for me my most underutilised app is Drambo. 😂 I know a lot has changed and been updated with Drambo since I last used it in 2021, but I still haven't quite clicked with it just yet.
Actually, Drambo is second to Tabletop. Interesting workflow, but buggy. 🫠
Is there any way to pull up screen time further than 7 days?
It would be interesting to gather an all-time stat
I barely used my idevice the last 7 days. Just got 10 minutes in gadget
I just use the battery page, activity usage by app, but even that is just 10 days of app use. Gives me an idea of what I’m using to some degree.
Tabletop had an update recently, so I downloaded it again….one day later and I’m still not using it lol
Tabletop used to be one of my most used ones. Since it occupies too much and I have other priorities I keep it away now
Used to be Tabletop, Beatmaker 2, Garageband, Figure, Caustic and Sampletank
Besides barely having time to jam lately, it is true I barely use any apps at all Good thing this keeps me from spending more. (although expecting Audiothing Noises and Unfiltered Audio Lo-Fi-AF sale for 4th of July)
What I consider underutilised: Drambo, iVCS3, MiRack, Gestrument Pro, TouchScaper, Koala and GR-16
The 3 first out of relative complexity. The others because some didn't click right yet. (on GR-16 as with PureAcid, I guess its a case of stringing patterns into songs, but have a plan B for that)
O I remember Sampletank lol. I must have bought nearly all the IK apps and barely have any left on my current iPad. Just took up needed space and they just don’t fit with how I use my apps now.
What’s plan B?
Well I guess I’m the opposite in this crowd, as Drambo is really all I use lol.
I’d say the number one “under-utilized” pick for me would be Logic Pro 2 for iPad. I paid for the first year subscription, and hardly ever even start it!
Another one I realized the other day that I don’t use as often as I should… AUM!
Should I list these 768 AUV3 apps?
Yes, list every one of those 768 apps and repent! Lol
😂 Hahaha! I didn't know Retronyms updated Tabletop. That's pretty cool. I still probably won't use it though. 😂
ASMR setups can be an inspiration, people are making some crazy sounds.
Haha list every app you don’t use so we can shame you publicly!!
Logic Pro. I want to use it and pay too much to let it sit. But its really got everything you need to finish songs, and mix/master.
The apps i use the least are the sugarbytes ones. They are awesome but i just get annoyed for some reason my them.
I’m currently ignoring most of my apps and have limited my sandbox to about 15 apps. I made a post about this but it was a flop 🤣🤣 no one cared about my experiment 🤣🤷🏼♂️
But for now I’m trying to stick to a few apps i know real well and a few i don’t so i can learn them better. Then I’ll pull the switch a roo on them after i complete some full tracks.
