Bone-conduction headphones

  • I have used Shock phones for years. Not for the best sonic capability but to be more connected with my surroundings at the gym or doing house chores or walking.

I use Shokz for running. In the UK many road races forbid the use of in / over ear headphones because of safety concerns. I've never seen it happen but they have the right to disqualify runners who are seen wearing them whereas bone conduction headphones are allowed. I've not tried any alternative brands because there weren't really any around when I first started using them (in around 2017) and I've stuck with Shokz ever since.

  • I received mine today. So far so good, apart from a lack of bass, the result is surprising good and it really opens a lot of use cases like watching a video about how to cook an italian sauce on my IPad while watching (and hearing) a goal from…Xavi on my TV

  • Can add I love the open shokz pro for working out. Great for music and audiobooks. Stays on with more intense movement and can still hear what else is going on in the outside world, though if I have them loud enough it’s still hard to hear if people are talking to me…

  • I’ve got a set of Shokz use than for dog walking etc, obviously they aren’t as bass heavy as “normal” ear buds but they do the job and it’s handy being able to speak to people without having to pull a bud out.

  • They're also very comfortable to use as a headset, if you don't mind the tinny microphone; adequate for calls but not for podcasting.

I'm wearing the Shokz OpenRun headphones I got a couple days ago right now. I love 'em. I've probably had them more on than off since I got them. I never got Airpods because it felt like they'd fall out and I'd lose them. These are very secure and feel like I'm wearing nothing at all (Simpsons reference). I let a couple people try them today and they were surprised at how good they sound.
