[UPDATED v0.9.5] Mass - new sequencer and modulator open for beta testing

edited September 27 in App Development

Update 09/27/2024:
I've released to TestFlight v0.9.5, which incorporates all the features and large changes likely to make it into v1.0. This includes:

  • large updates to patch saving and sharing
  • condensed settings UI
  • lots of smaller bug fixes and cleanup

See the TestFlight link for the full changelist. There are still some updates to existing features that will be made, and design polish, but the app is generally into a bug fixing phase preparing for initial release. Thanks again to everyone who has provided feedback!

Original post:
Hello friends,

Mass is a physics-based MIDI sequencer and modulator, and can be used either standalone or as an AUv3. It requires iOS 17+.

This is a pretty complex app with no tutorial or manual (WIP). I'm looking for anyone who is open to digging in and experimenting to join the beta group. I'm really interested to understand what is obvious and approachable without help...and more importantly what isn't.

Mass BETA

Demo:

Areas of focus to finalize development:
* UI/UX cleanup based on feedback
* Layout issues on smaller screen sizes, more responsive layout for AUv3 version
* Ensuring MIDI timing and sync accuracy (standalone app)
* Performance optimization
* General bugs
* Manual and tutorial videos

I'd love to get any/all feedback on the above, and of course any general feedback or suggestions from this group is always welcome!

Thanks for reading, I hope to see some of you in the beta.

  • Looks awesome! I'm not sure if I'm on iOS 17 already, if so I'll join the beta, if there's a free slot left.

  • Hey man this looks really awesome! I’ve got some time tomorrow and this weekend to have a jam with it. Do you have a discord or anything or prefer the feedback here on forum?

  • Looks good
    Haven’t got no time
    Good luck
Plenty of good people here to run it through the mill

Thanks! Any feedback is appreciated

My Discord username is tom.ward (or shiftybits, however search finds me...). I don't have a Discord server (yet?) for this, but feel free to DM me there, or here if you want to have a back-and-forth on anything. Feel free to drop anything that's helpful for everyone in this thread, too.

    Thanks, and no worries.

  • Well this is cool! Thanks for the open beta. The swipe down to return to ‘main screen’ from the scale selection screen- I feel would be more obvious with some kind of arrow or pointer (maybe toggle-able from some settings menu or something?)

The ‘parts’ screens- I’m expecting either linear or horizontal gestures, tracking around the circle is unintuitive (amazingly!) you would think it’d be obvious but I’m trained on linear gestures now.

The ‘X’ and ‘delete’ buttons are very close, I’ve bodged one by pressing the other at least once.

No presets in this version- I’d assume that presets will be accessible from the au host when they exist?

Basically though got it working and made boingy noises fairly quickly, happy with that! Love the approach to sequencing.

I see what you mean. Happy you pointed that out, it's all muscle memory for me at this point. Guessing this is on the iPhone version (just so I know which version to tweak and test)?

The ‘parts’ screens- I’m expecting either linear or horizontal gestures, tracking around the circle is unintuitive (amazingly!) you would think it’d be obvious but I’m trained on linear gestures now.

That's super helpful. After learning how they work were they more usable, or do you find yourself always defaulting to the linear gestures and having to relearn?

The ‘X’ and ‘delete’ buttons are very close, I’ve bodged one by pressing the other at least once.

Good shout-out. This is on my list of UI cleanup for 0.9.2.

No presets in this version- I’d assume that presets will be accessible from the au host when they exist?

Presets are having issues in the AUv3 version. That is high on my priority list for 0.9.2. The plan is to have:

    • Save data with host session (working now)
    • Factory presets available in AUv3 (bugged now)
    • User presets save in shared container between standalone and AUv3 (bugged now)
    • User presets (non-session) can be saved with host for AUv3 version (unimplemented now)

Basically though got it working and made boingy noises fairly quickly, happy with that! Love the approach to sequencing.

    Glad to hear!

About the circular editing of the parts screen, of course I'm used to going vertically for the usual knobs, but the fact that there are 2 concentrical circular sliders (that's how I see them) made me not even try that. I found it intuitive.

It took me a moment to find the tabs of the parts screen, I overlooked them first, and wondered how to make the parts trigger differently, and why they trigger every bar without collisions. But now that I know, it's fine. Actually with 3 or 4 parts it can be useful. I liked the random in scale chords it spit out.
-Speaking about the AU-version, which I tried first.

(Oops wanted to edit the old post and apparently quoted)

  • @tom_ward checking this now, seems interesting, thnx. I would echo what someone said above - linear knobs are the norm these days, for good reason imo, I like many people absolutely hate rotary knobs. Please offer a linear option, if possible.

I would like to be able to flick the parts from the main page, without going into the parts-view. Edit: just realised how cool it can be to every now and then push a part around when there’s no physics engaged. Maybe being able to switch between a move and flick mode could be cool.

What I found a bit unintuitive is that in the pattern tab iof the parts-view, the outer ring does not move at all, if pattern length is set to 1. Some feedback, why it does that might be useful, like the white letters on black, you get if you change values in the other rings.

  • In the mutate-screen of part 1 if you set some mutation the pattern-representation starts flickering, it doesn't for parts 2 to 4 though.

  • Looks interesting! I’ll give it a spin.

  • Thanks for the open beta .. had a little time to play with Mass ..

I’m finding that when I have Mass loaded in AUM, pushing “Reset” (from preset menu at bottom of screen) is causing Mass to crash in AUM every time.

Well I think it’s a whole lot of fun! Thanks for making it. My teenage son is into the physics of it. He got really engaged with the mechanics.

I get a crash when I select Reset from the preset menu.

In terms of UI, I would like an option to make the planets smaller (it’s called Mass, they are planets to me…). Colour options would be good as well.

One feature that could be cool would be a way to multi-select and then quantize a group of planets to all be in step or all be offset, etc.

Is there a note length function I missed?

A way to change the note from the planet itself would be nice and quick vs the tap and find it in the menu currently.

    Nice work! 👍

Apologies, yes- iphone Xr, ios 17.5.1

Unfortunately Mass got flagged by Check Point Harmony Mobile on my iPad and I had to uninstall it. I have to run this software as I use my iPad for work as well and it is a requirement. I don’t think it’s a Beta thing as I have a number of betas running on my iPad.

  • It would be useful to have a button which would (temporarily?) identify the parts by displaying their numbers on them.

Options for higher resolution grids and/or snap functionality could make things easier for setting up when specific notes are to be selected for the parts.

  • Some kind of identifier for the control thing (movable white stick thing in the middle of the parts->physics control circles) would be helpful. I don’t feel in control lol

Also, finding it a little tricky to grab the circular controls (mass, resistance, position, offset, chance) seems like I have to touch and pause before moving. Bit hit/miss as to when I succeed.

With that, it is pretty easy to make fun, organic sequences a la 70’s horror movie soundtracks…

Thanks for the feedback! I think "circular sliders" is a good way to describe those controls.

I agree the tabs aren't super obvious, I'll be looking into ways to make that more clear.

I've been experimenting with both flicking parts and pinch-to-zoom to adjust their mass. It's fiddly...but I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

+1 on that ring limiter being unclear. It needs more feedback, thanks for calling that out.

That's a weird issue, thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll see if I can reproduce that, and fix it!

Out of curiosity, could you share why you hate rotary knobs? In any case, those controls are on my list of things to review considering the mixed feedback so far.

Thanks for checking it out! I left a note above regarding this crash.

In terms of UI, I would like an option to make the planets smaller (it’s called Mass, they are planets to me…). Colour options would be good as well.

This is on my radar. They change size now based on their mass, but I feel like they are too big in a number of scenarios such as smaller iPhone screens and smaller hosted layouts (like the default layout size in AUM for example). I have some WIP tests to auto-scale them to something appropriate for the screen/window size.

I'd like to integrate more colors, as well. It's TBD right now how that will look, but it will almost certainly be automated in some way, to cut down menu diving and setup time.

One feature that could be cool would be a way to multi-select and then quantize a group of planets to all be in step or all be offset, etc.

Thank you, I like this idea! This is something I'll be doing some R&D on.

Is there a note length function I missed?

Yes, but the UI is not very obvious I think. There is a length value in the event properties for Note events.

A way to change the note from the planet itself would be nice and quick vs the tap and find it in the menu currently.

I'm not 100% sure I follow. Do you mean what note/beat the trigger happens on?

    Nice work! 👍

    Thanks!

I don't have any experience with Check Point Harmony, and a quick search didn't turn up a lot of helpful information. I think the app is being flagged because Check Point can't find it in the App Store registry. This is accurate, because the app hasn't been released for sale yet. My guess is that when v1.0 is released for sale, this issue will go away. Unfortunately that's not something I can do much about until the app is ready for sale. :(

I appreciate your time and the feedback you gave!

Can I ask, is this on iPhone or iPad? I'm curious because the way the main screen and editor interact is pretty different between the two, which affects identifying parts. I'll be looking into ways to better indicate what is what on the screen, including showing the note value for the part.

Crap I missed it. My plate is full of beta’s but this looks super interesting. Enough to make some room. 😉 @tom_ward if you have room for one more let me know I can dm you my apple email. Cheers.
