imagine a world of people trying to figure out paper maps again and how to find which way is north, lmao
"what do you mean..... you actually stopped and asked someone for directions?!?!?! thats just insane!"

I saw an "influencer" on YouTube who was a private pilot. She literally couldn't use her "analog" backup compass when her fancy GPS failed in her plane, and she was flying on a completely sunny day without a single cloud and looking out the window still had no clue where the cardinal directions were. (she crashed and died since then 😢)

Tech breaking down can cause mental breakdowns in individuals too, was the woman flying over the sea?

When you're a licensed pilot, breakdown of a non-critical piece of kit must not cause mental breakdown!

And no, she was flying between two adjacent airports that she both knew, in her home area, in the sunset.

  • I only know two things regarding piloting a plane.

    1) The bar for obtaining a private piloting license is much lower than that of a commercial license.

    2) When there is a failure on an aircraft, the first thing a pilot should do is locate and decide on an emergency landing site, even before trying to fix the problem.

Where am I going with this? I don’t know.
I just don’t feel like putting in the work to make better music right now. Or lately. Or for a little bit longer probably.

It won't come to that. If there's a major EMP, the resulting collapse of food and emergency services logistics, etc. will end most of civilization in less time than you could possibly imagine.

We rest on a knife’s edge if we can call this rest.

AI is actually fairly low on my list of worries. I’m not sure it would make the top 10 for this year.

As existential threats go, we have several to overcome before AI would be a significant threat.

There’s always hope that global warming, natural disasters or foreign powers take down our power grids and data centers “loose their minds”.

    There's always the EMP......

Like the “Ocean’s 11” gambit where they take down the city of Las Vegas? I’ve been searching Google and Etsy for such a device.

Don't search too hard, you'll end up in an offsite prison for 20 years.

Yah, but you might luck out and they do experiments on you and give you superpowers, so you bust out, come back and fuck em up.

Sorry for conflating issues but I know from personal experience that mental breakdown of household equipment has triggered mental breakdown amongst a few individuals who have an highly structured lifestyle, what would be to most people just an irritation.

Flying over water can be hazardous to even the most experienced pilot because it’s difficult to judge distance given the uniformity.

They prolly judge it the same way as pilots who fly at night and can’t see anything…..
    (If I’m flying at 60mph…and I fly for 2 minutes….)

Yes but if conditions are clear you can often determine your location and distance from landmark's roads or lights and so on, over a large mass of water you can’t.

There’s this little thing called wind that mucks about with ground speed.

when the planes speedometer says 60....that 60....even if your doing 30 and theres a 30mph tailwind (for a basic non mathematically correct example)
they are calibrated to account for windspeed

No, it isn't. It isn't even a Windows issue. It's an issue with an update to a 3rd party piece of security software. There's a fairly good high-level explanation of what happened here: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/07/19/what-is-crowdstrike-crwd-and-how-did-it-cause-global-it-outages.html

That wasn't the point though. It's how little we appreciate the potential impact of failures in our reliance on technology. It's truly scary.

Yes, the underlying cause was not mentioned in the initial reporting. However, Apple's macOS doesn't use Crowdstrike. So, chalk one up in favor of Apple and add a demerit to Microsoft.

Incorrect again. You're not doing too well today.

Crowdstrike has a product for MacOS just as it does for Windows. Neither OS "uses" it. They're security applications that can be used with either platform. Crowdstrike could have f'ed up on the MacOS version just as badly. Impact would have been far less since Apple systems are less widely used in server infrastructure. I'll give you that much. 😉

Are you aware of any IT admins who actually are using Crowdstrike for macOS in a business environment? LOL. I've never heard of any. The fact is that macOS is far less vulnerable to the problems which bedevil Windows. Windows is like swiss cheese for hackers.

(I'm not aware of any IT admins who actually are using Apple for server workloads in a business environment. SORRY! Just having some fun. 😂)

I'm not here to defend Windows or any other platform, unlike your automatic reflex to defend or promote Apple. 😉
However, the fact-bitch in me can't just let inaccuracies such as your earlier posts go unanswered. I wish I could.

Again: the purpose of the post was in the context of how dependent we are on technology in general. I believe people are grossly under educated about the impacts of failures of even part of the infrastructure we depend on. We tend to just mockingly think of poor sods going without their social media fix for a few days. The reality is a lot more dire than that. The widespread results of this relatively small error is a valuable illustration. Or was until the point was derailed.
