“Quantic Moods - Cadavre Exquis Op.1” Orchestral collaboration McD & JanKun (Staffpad)

edited July 13 in Creations

I contacted @McD a few weeks back with the idea of building something in Staffpad, using a creative process Inspired by the surrealist technique called Cadavre Exquis. It is always fun to work with Dave, he has such an unpredictable approach. It was a nice ping pong creative party.

Part I: Duality I
Part II: Disoriented Spin
Part III: Entanglement
Part IV: Duality II

The part III is a tribute to a modern composer using one of his infamous composition technique. will you recognize him?

  • Leonard Bernstein? Yes, you can always count on McD for that percussive zing. Hope all is going well for you, Jean.

This is outstanding! Congratulations to both of you. So much action, variety and surprises. This could be a John Williams composition for a great action, suspense movie. I have to listen again!

    Exquisite Corpse is appropriate.

I’m back in my wife’s hospital room again after 18 months of home life.

This project was an excellent diversion from hours of boredom.

Unfortunately, for @jankun, I used a lot of cut and paste for my contributions and
this outcome is 80% @jankun because where I did create extension sections I was
borrowing notes from his sections because the scrupulous pencil entry he does saves me hours of effort. I cut and paste and manipulate pitches with the lasso and transpose tricks.

@jankun creates incredibly detailed orchestrations and I’d sent him an update after a few hours and he’d get back to me days later with what you can hear.

I wish he’d get back to me faster because I have to fill my time reading social media, watching YouTube
cat videos and playing with the new hot apps (FuncBud being the app of the week).

Anyway, I sent him another Staffpad “sourdough starter” to see what we can come up with… maybe I’ll
spend a few days when it’s my turn… but don’t hold your breath. I’m still congenitally lazy and will avoid work at all costs. I feel sorry for taking credit for his efforts but I’m not proud.

  • Whoa! always impressed by you both as well as Staffpad which seems to have such good orch samples plus great expressiveness.
So you each worked on alternate sections or sort of mixed your efforts? Either way, it all blended well.
That 3rd section, my immediate thought was Steve Reich but maybe John Adams? But there's a lot of minimalism throughout.

I'm very sorry @McD to hear that your wife is so ill.

    @McD wisecracks:

We need your final answer to win your prize (What? There is no prize?)

    You win.

@jankun told me it’s Steve Reich. I kept thinking I should edit out some of the bars but then I remembered that the repetition is intentional. I thought he might be using cut and paste but have short term memory issues.

My sections reference the great musical plagiarist currently in Federal Lock up for tax fraud and thematic laundering, B.F.D. Bock.

NOTE: I created significant portions of my section using FuncBud instances into Atom 2 and importing the MIDI into StaffPad to save hours of pencil entry.

Not to worry… @jankun cleaned those parts up too because many of the instruments showed notes that were “out of range”.

I have decided not to submit a bug request to @cem_olcay to predict which octaves will be best because StaffPad will never coordinate with him on new standards for lazy composers and the target user base is too unorganized to protest or revolt.

Did I mention I’m in a hospital room with absolutely nothing productive to do?

Who wants the skinny on a Barium enema? They do it to get better pictures of your innards. Film at 11.

  • Absolutely enchanting and wonderful

    Amazing work my friend

Doing fine these days. Been creating a lot lately, surfing the wave as long as I can!
How is life treating you lately, Mike?

The last Collab with @McD (it's called In Frantic Waves) also had some Bernstein vibe. The rhythm section, maybe?
The 3rd part of track is a short pastiche of Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians".

  • For the lurkers out there, StaffPad is currently on sale at $49 down from $89. I think the extra libraries are also discounted now.

But with the inclusion of the 7 free Muse Score libraries the need for extra libraries is greatly diminished.

I’m always looking to validate that StaffPad can be used with MIDI import for anyone it’s a dread of music notation.

An official Apple Pencil is required to perform some editing and for all notation manipulations so the actual cost must factor that into the decision.

We have this french expression: "it's like peeing in a violin" which means an action is left unnoticed... I wish more people would join the Staffpad wagon. I haven't taken the time to check all the MuseScore libraries, but frankly for 49 USD, it's a steal.
I haven't had the time to listen to the track you sent yesterday, sorry. Needed to take a break for sanity sake 😂

No problem and no hurry. If we can do 2-3 of these a year I think we’ll provide enough inventory for
    this niche market.

I have done one of several StaffPad collaborations with where forum members have made MIDI fils available for me to play with and that’s also a lot of fun. But seeing your actual approach to arranging and adding the extra details of notation are the best way to learn new tricks of StaffPad Composing.

  • This is a great collab, and I love the contrast between the four different sections. So many different moods, but in the end the overriding feeling is one of joy, you can really sense the fun that went into making this piece.

Thank you Richard for the listen and feedback. SoundCloud shows 23 listens but getting feedback is so helpful.

I know you have a history of collaboration with @jankun and know what a pleasure it is to work with him. He never “phones it in” but always gives 100% as he did here.

  • Well done, sounded real intriguing here and also there. I can't read music so it's not for me but it surely got me wanting to.

  • I always enjoy your Staffpad posts. My best wishes for your wife.

Thank you. We’re taking it one day at a time.

  • This collaboration is amazing. An education and an inspiration. The detail is jaw-dropping. I have StaffPad and get frustrated with some of its quirks but this piece is a glorious reminder of what it is capable of. I shall sharpen my pencil (figuratively) and give it another go. Thank you both.

    😂 You got the idea!

We could use the same iPad but it’s just faster to share the StaffPad project file.
We just compressed the file into a *zip and added the current instance to as DM message. @jankun wanted to use Box but my iPad has lost the “save to files” option for some reason and I couldn’t move the file out of Box and StaffPad won’t open Box files.

How much would it cost to ship an ipad to Japan from California.

FYI: @jankun and I are working on Opus 2 already.

I usually tend towards 3 - 4 minutes. No particular reason other than it seems to be what most are doing. About a year ago I did a collaboration with @McD using several of his StaffPad Sketches. He provided all of the music and I just arranged them into a larger composition. I didn’t add anything of my own other than a few common production tricks. The end result is 11 minutes, but I never get tired listening to it.

  • This is a great collaboration. Sounds amazing. My fav is part 4!

Frankly, I’m just in awe of people who can do actual proper orchestration. Sounds like the score to an undiscovered Hitchcock. The ‘tick tocky’ sequence though reminded me of John William’s theme to Irwin Allen’s Time Tunnel:

(Yes. That John Williams, credited here as ‘Johnny Williams’. Coz younger, hipper, I guess.)

Thanks a lot for listening. I initiated the cadavre exquis with a few bars then @McD went nuts so I decided to go nuts too. It was a lot fun. Definitely Steve Reich on the 3rd part. Staffpad can do this kind as well. It is really a wonderful piece of software!

Thank you Richard! It was definitely a lot of fun. Really glad that the joy of making was somehow conveyed, it means we might have done a good job !
