Sudden battery loss. Advice, pls
So I turned on my 2016 iPad Pro 12” this morning and the screen was dark. I plugged in the power cord and, as usual, the battery icon appeared with a thin red band at the bottom.
However, the battery icon didn’t disappear after a couple of minutes as per usual. I tried rebooting and that didn't work properly either. The Apple logo did come up but took way longer than usual.
Now it’s charging, but at a very slow rate. Sounds like a battery failure in progress. Is that a reasonable diagnosis? If that is the case, how do I remedy that without losing all my Cubasis projects? My iPad is stuck on iOS 15. Is it possible with that OS to download to an external device?
What about the online backup I pay $3 a month for. Could I access that somehow on another device?
I know this forum is the very best place to access all the technical knowledge about an issue like this. One more reason to be grateful for ABF!

Mike,
So sorry to hear about your battery issues.
If you pay for iCloud storage, you should be able to access anything that you save there. If your Cubasis projects are saved there, then all should be well.
If you feel more comfortable doing that and downloading to an external device (SSD or USB drive), as I would, then you can use the CCK to transfer. It’s generally easiest to do this through the Files App.
Keep us posted!
Make sure the connector port is nice and clean on your iPad. I was having all sorts of confusing charging problems recently and this is what it came down to. All good now.
Thanks @mjcouche. It’s charging now. I don’t mind if it just works with charger but I wonder if the a battery failure could affect direct charging, too?
I guess if I got a new iPad I could transfer all the Cubasis projects into it.
When you replace the battery is data, like Cubasis,
Thx, bro.lost and must be backed up from the cloud?
btw - I thought I had cleaned it myself (still not working properly) but it wasn’t until I visited my local mobile repair guy that it was cleaned out properly.
@robosardine pls, what kind of charging issues were you having?
@mjcouche @robosardine … I did a charger test and got these results. Does it look like the charger is operating normally? Do these results reflect how the battery is performing?
Sorry to hear of you battery issue. Do you use the iMazing app by any chance? It can give some good info about battery health.
@LinearLineman if you replace the battery it shouldn't have any effect on your data. However, definitely make sure the stuff you want to keep is backed up either on iCloud or an external drive first, because things can go wrong when the device is opened (if it goes that route).
I would try cleaning the port a bit first, as @robosardine mentioned. A wooden toothpick works pretty well for me, although that might be an odd thing to have on hand. Try to get dirt and dust out of the corners, especially. That stuff can build up over time and it inhibits the charge (and data) current. Usually, for me, when it gets to that point the device will start doing a connect-disconnect-connect loop.
Other than that, if the battery was deeply discharged it may just be slow to recover. This could be totally normal for an aging battery that's seen a bit of use. The system is going to charge the battery at the rate it thinks appropriate. Doesn't mean it's "healthy", but may not mean it has failed either. I'm not sure based on the screenshot you posted what the battery state is.
I wouldn’t put cleaning the port at the top of my list of things that could cause this, but definitely worth trying. The one thing to avoid for sure is any kind of liquid cleaner or compressed air - those are good for circuit boards or anything with a lot of exposure to air, but generally not recommended for anything enclosed like a port.
Have you tried other chargers, or just swapped out the cord? Charging cords are not just a bunch of wires, but also have electronic components that can fail.
Personally I’d only replace the battery as a last resort, as sudden failure is not typical of normal battery aging.
If you have a reputable local electronics repair place it might be worth going in without the iPad and asking if they think they can fix it. Sometimes you can get someone recognize an issue and suggest some solutions, and if you don’t have the iPad on you a bit so good place can’t try to pressure you to leave it and fix it.
Happens to my ipad 9s ( even from new )
Battery drain. Then takes a while to register the power cable.
Your battery sounds like it is probably on its last legs. At some point a battery degrades so much that it won't hold a charge. That iPad is very old. If its battery was never swapped, it is likely at the end of its life.
While replacing the battery SHOULDN'T cause data loss, you should always have a backup of any data you don't want to lose...things can go wrong at any time...even with repairs.
There seems to be a chance that the fragile humanoid carbon based life form will get to 1,000 tracks before the robust machine made silicon based thing… that makes me surprisingly happy 😊
Thx @dav @tom_ward @michael_m @sigma79 @espiegel123. Good suggestions, all. The iPad is 2017, not 2016. I bought it new in 2022. Still, it’s had a lot of use!
I increased my iCloud from 200gb to 2T. $7 more a month and I can back up again. Anyone positive that acubadis projects will be backed up and retrievable?
This “emergency “ got me thinking about how much I would care if I lost all my projects, as, I think, happened to @Lady_App_titude a few years back. It makes me want to review and make sure I’ve mixed the better tracks to their best advantage and archived them on SoundCloud and BandCamp.
I fon’tbthink I’d be too disgruntled.
Now, what sbout if I lost everything and all that effort would not exist for “posterity”? That would sadden me for a bit, I think. I’ve lost track of a lot of things I’ve done that I would like to revisit. Still, I’d like to think I could simply let go and appreciate all the pleasure I received in creating and sharing the stuff for so many years. There’s plenty of great music in the world. It would be no loss. At least, I hope, I’d look at it that way,
Oh my, no! Not me. Have never been through anything like that. I've never lost any projects.
In fact, I back up my projects that are in-progress at the end of every day to a separate drive.
However, I don't use Time Machine, and probably should look into a more 100% bullet proof back up system.
Here are a couple of things that might need clarification based on a quick reading of the thread.
Yes, I'm positive. I've restored to a new device and Cubasis projects were restored.
You may not actually need that 2 terabytes unless you were getting notices that backups could not complete. In the post above I described where you can check the storage. One of the categories broken out separately is backups.
An iCloud backup doesn't take as much space as the full amount of storage in use on your device. Backups are compressed, and only data and settings, not actual apps are backed up.
One way to get a good sense of the health of the battery is to use iMazing 2. (They just upgraded to version 3 and so i don't know what's true with that version.) With iMazing version 2, you can download it to your mac (https://imazing.com/download/previous-versions), plug in your iPad and then find out the health of the battery. Open iMazing, click once on the icon of your iPad in the upper left hand column and then go to the bottom right corner and click once on the icon of the battery. It will let you know the number of battery charge cycles as well as the health of your battery - determined primarily from the Battery Effective Max Charge as a percentage of the the Battery Design Max charge. Below 80% is when a battery is considered in poor health.
@wim, I rarely let my battery drain dry. That’s why I was surprised to see it go black today. I’m back at 100% now,
I was getting notified I didn’t have enough storage at 200 go. I upgraded and now have a current back up. I only do it for the Cubasis projects.
Here’s the screenshot
You think I’m good now?
Yep. And you did need the additional storage.
However, you should also tap iCloud Backup > to check for the existence and date of your last backup, just to be sure. There's a Backup Now button there you can tap if your latest backup isn't recent enough.
Ack, so sorry to hear this. I had a couple iPad hardware failures the past two years, it hurts!
Did all that. Thx, as always, pard. Have a fun weekend!
@AudioGus no prob, my friend, all is copacetic (from the Hebrew, kol pseder… all good).
Thx @aufde i’ll look into it.
Glad it wasn’t you @Lady_App_titude but, it was some lady.
I am a carbon based unit @GeoTony and it does feel good (so far. MRI for prostate Monday. We’ll see if I have to make an attitude adjustment😉😎
It would decide for itself how much or if it was going to charge. I could leave it overnight & it could be half charged or nothing at all. I could plug it in - see the little green zap, leave it. ….. then it could take ages to creep up, then stop by itself for no apparent reason. I had even taken to tucking the cable under the iPad thinking that the very slightest movement could be disturbing it. Really quite infuriating and quite unpredictable.
Thx @robosardine, ikm hoping I’ll avoid what you experienced!
.
Is the opposite also a bad thing: always having the iPad plugged in?
@wim @robosardine @espiegel123, I ran a battery test. It scored about 75% of perfect. I can easily live with that as I, personally, am way less perfect than I once was.
How do Apple and retailers keep ipads charged ?
All my ipad 9s would discharge from new.
So wonder if the covid era just left ipads unmaintained.
75% might not be as good as you think. Batteries don't lose health in a linear way. Keep an eye on it.
I found that not letting it go below about 35% helps tremendously. You aren’t supposed to let it go to 100% either but hey - I can fail at even keeping an eye on a saucepan.
@LinearLineman : re 75%. My iPhone’s battery health is at 78% and it has been very problematic. It sometimes drains very quickly … the screen sometimes goes dark and it easily overheats…all signs of a deteriorating battery. I’ve been through this before and it is hard to gauge the rate at which it will continue to deteriorate.
