@LinearLineman : re 75%. My iPhone’s battery health is at 78% and it has been very problematic. It sometimes drains very quickly … the screen sometimes goes dark and it easily overheats…all signs of a deteriorating battery. I’ve been through this before and it is hard to gauge the rate at which it will continue to deteriorate.

lol, same goes for me! I’ll start considering a new iPad Pro 12”. which one would you recommend that isn’t the newest but will still be a step up.

This concerned me that you may have been saying you regularly let the battery completely run down. If so, that's a really bad idea and will degrade your battery badly.

Is the opposite also a bad thing: always having the iPad plugged in?

Honestly I don't know. Nor do I know how to find out. Actually, I don't even know about the 80% thing.

I have three solar power generators, each with lithium ion batteries, and all three give different advice on storage and periodic discharge / charge for maintenance. Apple devices could have a whole other set of recommendations. 🤷🏼‍♂️

OK. It seems to be a bit of a black art.

I guess not letting the iPad battery drain totally AND not keeping it plugged in all the time might be the safest way to go.

    Thanks for the reply.

You could have Apple replace the battery. It'll be cheaper than a new iPad.

  • You have been warned… get a new iPad. It will copy all user data to this new system.
There’s a new one with a larger screen.

    @McD which one would you suggest? I can get a 6th M2 512 for 1k or a new M4 for $1500

What headphone dongle do I need?

Edit: bought the m2 thru Best Buy and got the Apple dongle. Start of a new chapter.

Good choices. There are many YouTube videos to help show the transfer steps. It should take a long time (hours) so maybe plan for an overnight period when you won’t have any iPad access on either ipad.

Here's hoping your dongle always serves you well. 😉

  • Thx @McD. I already miss the home button.

@wim I’m sure it will. It always has. lol, I have an MRI on it tomorrow.

I have a M2 Pro also. Great iPad very powerful at the detriment of the battery.

If your new to USB-C your might want to read this thread https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/52956/usb-c-everything-you-wanted-to-know-but-were-afraid-to-ask/p2

  • Buy a Power bank /Usb battery if you like to go out with your iPad.

I like to go sit by the river and create music

  • I don't know if I'm late here but my old iPad has a semi-broken charging port. If its turned off it charges at a reasonable rate. If left on, it doesn't charge at all.
iOS has some weird power management going on.

So, might not be the battery and could be the charging port too, either way, doing a backup is a good idea.

  • You can check battery health with this method to find out capacity and battery cycles:
    https://www.wikihow.com/Check-iPad-Battery-Health

its in recent analytics data, export to text document and search for the terms MaximumCapacityPercent and CycleCount
Mine is a 2017 pro and I have 82% capacity and 860 battery cycles. So for 7 years old seems to be doing pretty well and I use it a lot most days.

I tend to keep mine plugged in most of the time when possible as this keeps the battery in good shape as it's the amount of full cycles which drain the capacity the most.

  • @LinearLineman hey there, it’s been a while! 👋

I had the same situation several times, one thing, JUST A THEORY I think happens is the cables seem to charge from both sides and it seems like when they wear out the first thing that becomes wonky is both sides don’t make contact so less power can come through. Maybe someone with more than a guess can tell me if I am on to something?

Also, I have been using heat shrink to prevent the cables from breaking, only to realize the cables are meant to break so the flimsy power port wont break, so there is really no escape from Apple’s planned obsolescence aside from being immobilized which defeats the purpose.. anyhow…. Just a guess….
