Well, I don’t know about you guys but I booked a trip to Congo. It was a bargain and all I need to take with me are my sunglasses and a bulletproof vest.

Don't forget your "mpox" vaccine now! 🥴

According to Wikipedia it's actually the origin of the use of the term for unwanted marketing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(Monty_Python_sketch)#Impact

AB Forum: a treasure trove of cultural history. 👍🏼

Thanks for that - I didn’t realize the origins of the word lay there.

Is it possible for the site to implement some kind of multi-factor authentication or "Captcha" style thing to screen out these bots?

  • lol We could all use a vacation. :D

I, in my infinite astonishing wisdom, and given the exponential advances in AI, predict the complete uselessness of Captchas in 3... 2... 1... 😉 anyway.

Someone would need to take the time needed to research options, set it up, test it, and deal with any negative fallout. It's more work than you think. There is exactly one sysadmin here, and that person has other time pressures and higher priorities.

And as @SevenSystems mentioned, the bots keep getting smarter. Not to mention that sometimes real people register accounts and post SPAM, even going so far as to post a legitimate response or two and then waiting until later to start posting spam to avoid the easy "zero day" detection.

    There's no silver bullet.

    Idea for a captcha :
Choose the correct spelling between Game changer and Game changier

    Perfect.

  • Another day, and more….

  • I'm probably being dumb for asking this but what exactly are all these spam posts supposed to achieve?

    Irritation, clicks>money?

    Scam calls….

I post a response on a thread, to return to an avalanche of spam…

Definitely irritating - quick question to the mods - is it worth flagging these or is that just more annoying for you? Also, if you want any temporary mods who are able to blitz them as they appear let me know...👍
