Hey I’m Gordie

Hey I’m Gordie I’ve been a long time lurker and reader of the forum only got round to creating an account :)
I love techno and glitch music and have been into making and listening to electronic music for 25 years I used to use manly a old pc and amp years ago I’m heavily inspired by aphex twin and over the years now I have grown up :) I’ve got some hardware and using a hybrid type of set up with iPad and mixed hardware . I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with the mc101? I have owned one for 4 years or so and don’t know it inside and out however i would like to know if it can be used as a class compliant audio device and still receive a midi clock signal for stop start and sync . Previously I was using ableton link to sync my Mpc to my iPad that’s running AUM / Audiobus that’s hooked to Mc101 via usb . The mc101 acts like a 32 bit sound card for the iPad and gives me 1/4 outs that go straight into the Mpc one . Only thing is the lag when using link is terrible
Anyone any ideas ?

  • Hi! Sorry I have zero experience of the mc101. But good luck

  • While I don't have experience with the mc101 either, just wanted to extend a warm welcome to the forum. :)

  • Great name. Welcome Gordie.

Welcome out of the shadows @Gordie 😎

According to the nicely detailed Reference Manual, the MC-101 should be able to receive midi clock. See page 40 for sync options. I believe you will want:

    • Sync Src: USB (AUTO might also work)
    • Sync Out USB: OFF
    • RX Start Stop: ON
    • RX Start USB: ON

You may need to upgrade the firmware. I see mention that they added Class Compliance with firmware 1.6.

  • Welcome to this lovely forum!!

It’s here the real experts and developers hang and discuss mostly iOS and iPadOS apps - great place to be where the knowledge is…

  • Welcome to the forum @Gordie!

  • welcome!

  • Hey awesome thanks for the warm welcome :)

  • Yeah mate welcome!

Lots of great people here with crazy knowledge who delight in conceptual ideas and freely exchange what they know with chill like-minded individuals

Been here a short bit now and I'm constantly humbled and inspired by what I get to take in

Be sure to check out the tracks people are posting. Such a crazy variety of incredible talent!

(On topic, and on brand apparently lol, sorry, no mc101 knowledge. But if you need a beatboxer...!)

    Welcome aboard!

Brill I’ll give this a go tomorrow :) thank you for taking the time
    Fingers crossed

  • Hey fellow countryman! Another lurker, coming out of the woodwork, great!

  • Are you sending MIDI clock from the iPad or MPC?

  • Hello :) lol
Yes I was trying to make my mpc be the master clock however the more I’ve read I’ve found out that iPad running AUM can only be synced via link as I don’t have a dedicated audio interface for iPad ? I’m trying to avoid link due to latency issues . So I’ve figured out I’m gona try getting iPad runing AUM to clock Mpc and td3 over usb then I’m going to chain the Mpc clock via midi and make iPad be master clock so I don’t have to rely on WiFi to use link and I won’t have the doubling effect I’m getting when running both Mpc and mc 101 . I did try messing with the sync timing but think there should be an easier route :) . I’m wick at explaining stuff lol

  • I will post my findings later :) this was previous set up . have everything unplugged now and going to start again later see if I can figure it all out :)

  • Howdy Gordie! Digging your setup. I mainly do an iPad/Maschine/Desktop thing now but have done some hardware groovebox/ipad combos. Your setup there reminds me of what I am missing out on, very cool!

  • @Gordie said:

That is a sick setup! (That means "awesome", lol.) I always love seeing what other people use in conjunction with their iPads/iPhones. (Me, I'm just 100% iPhone at the moment, lol.)

  • Nice setup @Gordie. I. Curious as to how you have your gear setup. Are you running it as 2 separate systems with the suitcase being one and the iPad and Mac the other? Or is everything going into the mpc or the iPad? Oh and hello 👋

  • Hey guys :) thank you
@audiblevideo hey I’ve tried to incorporate the gear I use the most and build them into cases so I can set up quick ,as I have very little room . I’ll try explain the way I’ve it set up
So iPad Pro is going to a usbc hub and has 15amp charger for power it keeps iPad charged and it powers mc101 and rd3 via usb then a mouse for the iPad and mini usb for the Korg nano (all plumbed into the case)
I mainly use AUM on the iPad
I make AUM clock the mc and the rd3 via usb
The MC101 is an audio interface when plugged in like this so all it’s audio and the iPads audio come out of its main 1/4 outs .. these along with the rd3s headphone out go to a small unpowered stereo mixer
The outs from this small mixer go to the Mpc ones line ins and monitored through the Mpc so the whole thing acts like one big instrument
I can apply internal fxs to the iPad and hardware like this on the Mpc
I used to use ableton link to sync the Mpc to the iPad however there was a big noticeable lag .so now I have the iPad clock the mc101 and rd3 , Mc101s midi out goes into Mpc midi in ,then AUM clocks it all it becomes the master :)
Hope this makes sense lol it seems to work for me
I like it because I get the best of both worlds being able to have hand on control of several things all communicating together and I like the modular type sequencing on the iPad to run the hardware

  • @Gordie how ya doin!
Wick is a dead give away!
Never heard it anywhere else lol!

  • I totally respect your awesome set up @Gordie! How exactly do you have your gear hooked into that suitcase? Total respect.

  • @id_23 all good in the hood man :) I’m in Newtownards hello from down the road lol
What type of music are you into making ?

@NoiseHorse yeah dude with a load of foam and cable ties and a few screws . I heated up plastic raw plugs and pushed them into the bottom of the mc101 and td3 where the screws are at bottom of the unit this give me a somewhat temporary solution to mount them through the case with normal screws so they don’t budge . I like the rough look of it all :) if you didn’t mean how did I put them in the case lol then I explained in above post the wiring of it all :) hope your good man
