Soundcore Motion + portable speaker for music creation

Wow, I’ve tested a lot of portable speakers for music creation on the go. I own the OB-4 which will always remain the king but, its a bulky device and has exposed drivers, making it not ideal for every situation.
I travel for work, and i like to make music in the hotels and in parks. The OB-4 is sometimes too much hassle to carry so I’ve been looking for an alternative for the times i just want to pack a bag and go.

I’ve tested over 10 portable speakers this year.

This Soundcore Motion + lives up to the hype!! It sounds amazing honestly, and holds a lot of detail in the 4 drivers and 2 passive radiators.

The app has a customizable EQ and several presets, which help to get a more true to original sound. A lot of these portable speakers are just muffly bass devices for listening to loud pop songs at partys. This device however has hi-res audio and is more for the crowd that wants their music to just sound good and true and not be in constant party mode. That said i bet it sounds great at parties!

I did a couple quick tests to try to show the sound off, these are recorded with my iPhone 15 pro max mic, so expect it to sound like that!

  • Here’s a peak at the app. Custom Eq and a cool white noise app that lets you pick 3 sources and then mix them together to get the background noise you want! I like that a lot!

Thanks for posting this, I was interested in the Beats Pill but noted your feedback in the other thread. The Soundcore Motion + is around half the price of the Pill, so I’ll be checking this one out.

  • @oldsynthguy absolutely! I did a side by side test again today with the beats pill / motion +, and the contest was not even fair.

The pill sounds absolutely awful and i really wanted it to work for me because of the usb c audio… and the form factor.

The motion + when playing synth patches handles them so well, the pill was cracking and sounding hollow.

You can get it on Amazon for about 75$ and if for some reason its not for you, do the old free return!

The sound is very impressive, and does not sound tiny and forced.

If carrying a bigger speaker is not a problem, the new one from soundcore motion x600 is amazing and very clear! Its a lil bigger than what i want to carry but it is LDAC, hi-res certified and claims 3x more clarity. Haven’t seen one bad review on it

  • Oh this sounds very interesting. Thanks for posting. Is there any stereo separation at all? Never sure how these portable speakers deal with a stereo signal.

I have read that the x600 has a fair bit of latency over aux though (see the question in the comments):

I think so! When i play this video i hear the voice in each position!

Interesting! Well I’m kinda glad i did not grab that one! I haven’t noticed any latency with the op1 and motion +, but I’ll give it the true test over the next few days
    This thing sounds so good

  • @reasOne thanks so much for all that. I think this could be the perfect add on for a non-headphone, proper portable setup. Just trying to find one cheap down here in Australia. Thanks again!

    Absolutely.
Its been frustrating having to order, test and return so many speakers over the years lol! But it was kinda fun.

But i think it all paid off with this find… finally. I’m really picky about the sound of a portable speaker especially when it comes to making music, i found a couple other decent ones along the way but just couldn’t deal the distortion and muffled bass on so many of them even the good ones.
The custom eq really helps this thing be the champ

  • edited September 2

Thank you @reasOne for your findings. While I'm happy with my old IKM iLoud and DOSS SoundBox Color, it's always good to keep an eye out for alternatives.

Does the custom equalizer setting hold after turning the speaker on/off or do I have to go to the app and reload it?

I appreciate your pain and the ability to benefit from it :) Have been trying to find one a decent price and lo and behold the Australian Soundcore store has them discounted at $99AUD with free delivery. I think it may be a Father's Day sale that they haven't ended yet. Jumped on it anyway, in case it disappears. Looking forward to it arriving!

I have some SoundCore in ear and over ear headphones and they are both amazing for the price.

Thanks for this - I checked and Amazon had the x600 on a lightning deal for £119 (40% off), but I’d have had to have bought it within the hour, and some of the reviews put me off. It’s £191 now - never mind!

I think the Motion + would satisfy my needs though. That’s gone up again too, but I’ll keep my eye on it, and might grab one in the next sale.

How is the motion + vs motion boom ?

I bought a couple of motion boom.

Decent for the beach but indoors. Couldnt EQ the bass ( which were seen as a positive )

To really use indoors ( I think )

    So returned to Amazon.

    £75 each.

I guess you couldnt really say tbh.

  • The Motion Boom 1 and Boom 2 do not have an AUX input. However, the model that came between the Boom 1 and 2 does have AUX and it was called the Motion Boom Plus. It's good if you are a bass fiend, but go for the regular Motion+ if you want a more balanced sound.

    Right.

    Thanks.

I would say that most of the boom speakers sound really good, but are not designed for music creating IMO. They are really good at bass tho which is not really good for mixing…
, i tested one of the booms earlier in the year and honestly didn't like the sound when i plugged in my synths ….which is why i took so long to get the motion+

The motion + however, fits the bill for making music. As its not designed strictly for bass.

    Just saw this. Agreed

  • Just a heads up for those following that Amazon just announced a limited time deal on this for $69.11 in the US store. This speaker did rank #3 in the reddit bluetooth speaker group. I guess there are few EQ settings designed for a neutral sound.

Also for Australian folk it’s still showing as $99.99 AUD on the Australian Soundcore site.

Yea I believe Soundcore is by Anker. Anker is one of my go to brands for electronics. They also make some of the best 3rd party things for all your Apple or Android needs. Cables, chargers, adapters, etc… I have several things by Anker and each one has worked well and lasted awhile.

Agreed, Anker stuff is generally great

  • Yup it’s on sale for 70$ usd same day shipping! Anker makes great stuff that lasts!
If anyone is making music on the go this speaker is the one for what we do.
It sounds way better than 100$

  • Latency can often be a problem with these speakers. You tested the Motion + for latency specifically @reasOne ?

  • I picked up a Motion+ specifically because it performed well in latency tests. It's been a while, though, so I don't know where I saw that info. Probably on this forum...

I like it. It doesn't replace true studio monitors, of course, but that's not the point. Much better than the other Bluetooth speakers I've tried. I keep having to recover it from my kid's room because he prefers it to his cheapie.

I don’t use it with Bluetooth for creating music, i use aux, i don’t personally notice any latency. Its great to make music in the park or hotel room… not sure about pushing it to its limits lol
But i don’t hear any latency but im sure tests to get to the nano second will find some

Yeah its def not replacing monitors but its so easy to travel with for the sound

I use the te OB-4 as well when traveling ….but it requires a lot more care with its exposed drivers/no protection over them… i don’t always feel like messing with it so that’s when i grab the motion +

In the case of latency, the musical instrument you use is also important. Personally, I have a much more sensitive latency perception threshold when playing guitar than when playing keyboards.

  • My Motion+ arrived today and whilst I've only played some music through it via bluetooth, it does sound fantastic! Looking forward to plugging the iPad in and doing some sessions to test it out properly.

@reasOne do you use a custom eq or do you keep it flat? If custom do you mind sharing? Thanks!

    I do both!
Normally leave it flat when I’m making music,… sometimes kick the extra bass boost button off.

Have you got to make any music on it yet??

  • It does sound really great! Kinda unbelievable tbh I’ve tried so many portable speakers and mostly had dissatisfaction until this one
