Love that. Also if we do an app route it can just be general. Like a sample forward app (Koala, Dawnbeat, etc) or drum app or whatever. I’m sure all of us have at least one of most music app types.

Thanks for sharing all of this @Fruitbat1919 ! Love the organizing / Song of the Month Club ideas the best. I’m already pretty organized but definitely need to get back to sharing creations again.

    Cheers!

Yes, organise that sharing routine ;)

I may do a 4-track challenge that's app-agnostic, but I'll create a new thread so as to not take away from the original thread topic. :)

  • So where can I hear some of these finished tracks. I’ve always been curious about what sort of sound comes out of you 😎

I posted one on this month's SOTMC. I will post another next month. But will post some here for you.

I have noticed some bass issues, as I've mixed these on my iPad. Some monitor mixes being done!

I do also need to learn how to mix and master tracks for multiple types of speakers. I'm not able to hit that middle ground yet - in time :)

Not what I expected, apart from the last one, picking up Japan vibes from that. Cool stuff

  • Not what I expected, apart from the last one, picking up Japan vibes from that. Cool stuff

I think the thing is with my music, you can call it selfish. By that I mean that I don't make it in any way to try to lure in the listener, I make it exactly how I want it, or at least I try considering my limited skill set. Learning all the time, but definitely no plans to change my music to make it more palatable to others.

Yes, you will hear lots of influences. Japan of course. The second track on the mini album is out and out Tangerine Dream. I think it's my finding my own sound period by using what I've heard from others - probably typical?

The main thing I'm trying learn at the moment is how to mix and master for multiple speaker types - I'm a long way off cracking this yet - I keep watching videos, but I've yet to translate their knowledge to my skill set!

Don’t get too hung up on making it production perfect. Get it out there. I get totally where you are coming from, and suffer the same myself, I can (need) to make it better, but we don’t have to every time. Sometimes maybe yes hold it back, but I have held onto tunes for years, 10 + years….
This is a random one I found in mt Cubasis projects…held onto, no idea how long or when I made it. Your post made me revisit stuff…

Catchy piece. Talking about 10 years, it's my 10 year iPad music making anniversary! I'm celebrating this soon with a new iPad and change of setup - Instead of adding some more dawless boxes to my setup, I'm going to get a second iPad and an audio interface. The Minilogue XD is almost the perfect size for two 11 inch iPads stuck on the back. I love dawless hardware, but iPads are so adaptable. Imagine the happy hours deciding which apps to have on screen lol

@Fruitbat1919 This video for a new plugin included in desktop fl studio explains at the beginning how to get the bass working on smaller speakers, it’s an explainer for the plugin really but at the beginning does explain the principle which may help.

I just last week finally upgraded my Air 2. The battery is starting to bulge a bit 😞. I got the 10th gen iPad, 64 gb. Wow what a difference, some due to better performance, which has allowed me to get rid of a lot of the ‘frozen’ audio tracks in my Cubasis projects. Tracks that were frozen because of performance, but also tracks where I had exported audio from gadget. The AUv3 in gadget that has happened since I seriously used the iPad has also made a difference. I’m now free to change things without thinking about having to re-freeze or re-export, which I had got so used to doing….I was considering an MPC Live, but went for the iPad upgrade instead. Yeah the 256gb would have been better for space, as mentioned in another thread, but with iCloud, files app etc, I don’t feel I need the extra ‘cupboard space’. The prices at the time were +£130 for the extra space.
Not fully figured out the no headphone jack situation, waiting for my usb host device (now due early dec) before I look further into that. Currently just using by BT headphones while going through the old archive of stuff.
So far I’ve cleared about 15gb of space I had used to make up for missing features or performance.
Already tested with my audio interface and that works fine through my existing hub but using a usbA to usbC converter (£3) with controllers connected too.

    Thanks @AndyPlankton

First look has explained some, now I’ve just got to figure out how I do the same thing with either the Logic Pro tools or an app. I’m presuming that you can do what the app shown does with something in Logic on iPad as others seem to get decent mixes that work on varies speakers.

Just get the £9 Apple dongle (3.5mm to USB C). You can plug that into a hub or directly into the iPad if you're not using any other peripherals.

Yes, my iPad Air 2 ended up with a bulging battery. I went for a new Air and any of the modern iPads are a revelation in ability compared to our old Air 2 models! 10 years is a decent amount of time though - the only electrical items I’ve had last longer are my studio monitors and an Apple iPod!

Tweaking your synth patches to try and get the additional frequencies may be an option too. I haven't tried it yet but it looks fun

Yeah, and it will also work in a USB A hub if you attach a USB C to A dongle:

  • Honest question: can you elaborate on the difference between step one and two, and maybe 5 as well? I get carried away jamming a lot and maybe I’m just over thinking it lol

This is not to preach to those that manage to finish tracks. I had an issue where I just never finished anything - now I finish many tracks per month.

I just thought sharing this may help someone :)

I structure my music making time into six distinct actions:

    1. Creating material - by this I mean making loops, synth sounds, audio and midi clips, single app beats etc etc

I then store these in AudioShare, AUM or the specific apps used

All the time keeping the apps I use often organised.

    1. Create Ideas - then I use certain apps like EG Nodes to make ideas.

I may take these ideas further, or sometimes just use parts of them in the next step.

    1. Create Tracks - I then take material, sounds, ideas, audio, midi etc and put them into Logic, where I spend time arranging. I use Logics features such as Players and Key Track to help, often turning them to midi and molding them to my needs.

    1. Finish Tracks - I then use the tools in Logic to help me mix and master my tracks.

    2. Playing Music - This part comes at any time during the other 4 actions. I have a small hardware setup that I connect my iPad to. I play to material, ideas and tracks I’ve made. This is different to making tracks, as I’m concentrating on actually learning some more playing skills. This also helps break up the other actions.

    3. Posting on Loopy Pro’s SOTMC - only done this once so far, but it really helped me move on from a track. I used to find it immensely difficult to leave a track, as I never felt they were mixed and mastered well enough. Posting on SOTMC this month really helped me move on and I’ve now finished 3 new tracks and 1 old track from five years ago!

    Things to keep in mind:

    1. I try to never spend too long on one of the actions at a time.
    2. Being organised with files and apps is important. I need to find what I want quickly.
    3. I rarely throw away any material or ideas, so external storage is a must. My Logic size is currently over 60gb and that’s just created tracks in this last two months!
    4. I try to keep it all fun - it’s my hobby not a job. If I get frustrated, bored or just having an idea block, I go and do something else. Breaks are very important. Use Loopy Pro Forum as a break!
    5. Never spend too long on one track before taking a break or doing another action. Your brain needs to rest from the repetition of trying and creating.
    6. I think things like SOTMC and just generally posting your music is important. Don’t worry about the reaction of some or worry. Most people genuinely post helpful comments when asked and it’s important to learn from others.
    7. Find your own way, my actions may not suit you. My choice of apps may not be yours. It takes time, and probably I should have added as an action - find your way of making music and the tools that suit you the most. Never fear changing it up a bit!

I hope this helps at least one person. I’ve struggled with finishing my music for over thirty years now! So, old dogs can learn new tricks!

  • @ambrosiajam said:
Honest question: can you elaborate on the difference between step one and two, and maybe 5 as well? I get carried away jamming a lot and maybe I’m just over thinking it lol

    Certainly :)

While my music may be made up of lots of things, like physically played music, programmed in music, created musical loops, sampled sounds, designed synth sounds, app created midi and many other things, I find that putting musical material together to make a track, is best done in clear and organised actions, as opposed to doing everything just when it is needed.

Imagine you are writing a piece of music and then you need a particular sound, drum loop or sample. Doing any of these actions, I.e. making new material (my step 1.) will take you out of the flow of making the track. I’ve found that this makes making tracks long, disjointed and laborious - in other words not very productive. You may well be doing all the same things, but this way of ordering them is more likely to be tiring and more mentally challenging.

So, I make ‘musical material’ in step 1. This includes loops, samples, design synth sounds, etc. I’m also trying out new apps during this process. I then store lots of these. I have thousands of presets and self designed sounds to choose from and rarely find I need to make something beyond light alterations and tweaking to fit a track. I have lots of loops ready to be warped by fx. I have lots of ready made drum loops that can be place holders while starting ideas and tracks, than altered later or completely changed if needed.

Step 2 is different from step 1, in that I’m using some of those sounds and loops and samples etc to make an ‘idea’. This may also have played music in too. These are usually short sections of music that are small ideas that later I may use to start, continue or finish a track. Sometimes the idea may have parts I put into a track, or sometimes it’s just the combination of notes, midi or sequences that make me think of something that will start a track (step 3). I will often make up many musical ideas at a time. The second I have an idea, I need to get it down, as my brain will soon forget it otherwise!

Step 5 is just sitting here:

And playing on my keyboard and hopefully learning to play the bass guitar in the future. Step 5 is great fun, but can be a distraction from track making at times, that’s why I say to limit any one action in the time you do it. Sometimes it’s great fun to jam either to one’s own music or to other people’s, but if careful, you may never get any finished tracks….like I found myself doing for years. I spent so long on jamming, making musical material and learning new apps, that I never finished a track!

Hope that explains it a bit better.
