Mass Midi Sequencer and Generator: My 50-minute walkthrough!
Mass was released last week, and I think very few people realised how excellent it is. I hope this video changes that, it is a very innovative and super interesting midi generator and sequencer:
Premiere starts in 15 mins, pop in and say hi in the live chat if you’re free, hopefully @tom_ward the dev will be there too.
Comments
Thanks @Gavinski! That premiere was fun
It was! Great app Tom!
Absolutely love this app Tom. Me and a buddy picked it up the day @Gavinski did a community post about how much he liked it.
I’d love to see a way to go from a pattern on one chord with all of the Physics and fun to a completely different Chord with its own physics. All parts would instantly shift to new notes…A way to build out progressions so to speak.
Anyway, absolutely incredible app.
You know what I'd love, though I know it is probably unrealistic in terms of adding it to the UI: a kind of overview page that showed the sequences for all the Parts lined up, and perhaps also giving an overview of what events each part is triggering (pattern triggers, wall collision triggers etc). In compositions with a lot of parts it can be fiddly to get that kind of overview in the current UI setup.
Another thing I think I forget to mention in my vid was the first thing I noticed missing, and which I have requested Tom add already: a way to limit the global max and min velocity range. In the meantime, I am using the Midi Curve app from Midi Tools by Victor Porof to do that.
BTW, publishing that post and later my video has moved that app from not even being in the music app chart top 100 to its current position at number 4! 😜
@Gavinski that’s great to hear! This app deserves that exposure. It’s my favorite sequencer hands down. Another great point you made was the Dilla vibes you can get from Mass….totally accurate. Mass into RingsFX gets me the same feeling as using Rings in my Eurorack system.
I kinda feel - how come all sequencers don’t have this ability to do very fine offsets, and the mutate offsets getting longer over time is a really cool feature too
Yeah I can second that, again. Thanks Gav.
@Edward_Alexander you might want to reconsider as it has some really nice features, just sayin bro!😀
I'm on the fence for this one. Does it come with a lot of example presets that sort of show off the functionality and act as a tutorial? If not, that would be super helpful. Also, I wish it had an intro price so I could feel it's worth taking a chance on. Seems like it would help the developer get the word out quickly too. But I also understand a lot time time has been invested in this so it's hard to know if that would be fair without giving it a shot.
@Uprightmusic :”Dilla vibe”? I’m IN!!!
It has some presets, maybe 15 or so.
I just posted the 21 presets I saved inside AUM preset browser and used in my walkthrough video on my Patreon btw, for upper tier Patrons.
I go through most of these in my walkthrough, so having them on your device would be a great way to learn. Stop after I demo and discuss each one in my vid and then play around with that exact preset on your own device, for example:

Thank you! I'll check it out!
Yeah man! Haha. Check out the @Gavinski video.
I'm pretty sure you could soundtrack an entire Legend of Zelda game with this.
Hmm I don’t recall mentioning anything about this, but I will say that I did have the beta for a while, although I ended up not having much time to test it. It does seem interesting.
I also tried this on beta briefly but because I didn't really know how to use it, lost interest and never touched it again til release. Reading and rereading the manual while experimenting finally unlocked it and I was like... Wow!
What do you miss Gav? You mentioned in the video you don't like the loose menu windows but I disagree strongly there, it's very smooth and fast when you need to alter several of the masses. I did have the same initial reaction as you, so ...😀
I would like a copy/paste function when you know the next one you create is going to be similar to one you already have made.
The global scale setting is not reliable and changes, why I do not know. A lock or let me know if I'm doing something wrong.
I don't know but the UI or at least that open space where the objects "work" could be a bit more ... something. Gav, you also mentioned markings on the objects but refrained, some colour option though, maybe.
Oh yes, lack of copy paste features is something I mentioned to the dev when we chatted before I made the vid, but I forgot to mention it in the vid. That would be so obviously useful to me that I'm very surprised it's not there.
Key or scale changing is because a preset is sending transpose events. That's a feature, not a bug.
About the composer area, do you mean maybe that it could be more obvious where a quantization is happening? I guess that's not marked, because there is no one thing to be quantised, there would be several things which would all be quantised differently - eg, notes, velocities, keys, scales. Still, might be useful to show quantization areas for notes clearly.
I'm not sure what I mean except it feels like a boring environment to work in, and it shouldn't when you playing with something like this. It's no crucial thing, just a feeling ..
I'm sorry my man it wasn't you and I don't know why I thought that (what happened to the search engine, it was hell finding the original post).
It was actually Svetlovska who had a small paragraph about why it wasn't going to be a buy.
Oh yeah @Svetlovska you would really like this I think, as long as you're willing to learn it
@Uprightmusic thank you!! That means a lot to me.
@Uprightmusic @Gavinski Thanks for the feedback and ideas. I love to hear how people use the app, and what features would better enable various workflows. I will very rarely promise anything, unless it's already done and ready for release, but I do write down and think through all suggestions.
That said, expanding the Transpose events and building out more complex progression mechanics is an area of interest for me, too.
Likewise, the ability to support custom velocity ranges is built in to the existing app...I'm working through the UI/UX on it for a future release.
Thanks, again ...and also: you reminded me I've been sleeping on getting into RingsFX!
Nice, Gav!
@gkillmaster I understand the hesitation at this price point. The walkthrough from @Gavinski, combined with his presets and the factory presets go pretty deep into showing off the functionality and acting as tutorials, as well as laying out the value IMO. If there's anything you'd like to know to figure out whether this is a good tool for you or not, feel free to reach out!
I would love to hear that
Thanks for the feedback! The copy/paste function has come up a few times, and I agree it'd be great to have. I'm currently working through the UX for that, for example how granular should it be (copy/paste entire Parts, just Patterns, both, etc.). Free free to send me thoughts you have for these types of features! It's good for me to hear/read how other people use the app.
@Pxlhg it sounds like your Composition has a transpose event in it somewhere. This highlights an area I can work on improving, i.e. different/better ways to visualize and notify around different types of events. It's been noted.
Do you think it's from the minimal approach to information display in that area, or more along the lines of you'd like to see more animated elements/etc.?
Yeah I want to use transpose but be it locked to the scale I did choose to start with, are my thinking wrong here?
That might be it, but I don't mind minimalistic so, still not sure Maybe it's just the monophonic colours, perhaps have some interface colour changes al'a TC-11*. No, not more animation.

Thank you @tom_ward ! I'll check it out today!
You can indeed transpose just the key not the scale - one is set up for x axis, one for y, you can adjust that, disable, enable etc
Right, I figured that much after a while (as they are titled just like so 😳). I had a hard time getting out of the changed mode and had to move stuff around to get back to the original scale. But, the whole issue is obviously on me so, I'll get better 😀
Another attempt with Mass Midi Sequencer. This time I made a preset in stand alone first and then in AUM I started separate the objects by channel. So just one instant of Mass controlling three synths. This is a fifteen minute setup, nothing deep. BUT, it does sound good and slow progress is something not all generators are well equipped to do. This one is.
