Looking for a backing tracks app for church – no subscription

I am looking for an app similar to Playback from Multitracks for playing backing tracks in a church setting. I need the ability to loop specific parts of a song, a metronome, and a setlist. Do you know of any that don’t require a subscription? Alternatively, could I achieve this effect easily with Koala Sampler or Loopy Pro?

  • Are you okay with making your own loops? If so, Garageband for iOS, combined with TONALY is your best friend.

What I did was to arrange the song in TONALY, then I exported the MIDI to Garageband.
I then copied the MIDI to the Live Loops after I cut it accordingly.
Finally, I added Garageband’s Auto Drummer into it. Here’s a video demonstrating similar concepts, directly from the iPhone

But that’s not the only way to solve this. You can also use Cubasis, which I feel is the BEST DAW on iOS.

Koala doesn’t support MIDI loops. But it can certainly launch audio loops. I’d use that for cool sound effects, or drums. But you can make it work for your use cases.

How do I know this? Well I’ve been gigging for over 20 years, and recently volunteered for Bethel Music.

I post a lot of content on my youtube page at youtube.com/seonnthaproducer

  • Thank you for your detailed response. I mostly work with audio rather than MIDI when it comes to church services, so I need something simple like ShowOne (which is perfect!) but with loop abilities in addition.

  • There’s several good ones out there, I don’t really use any of them that much or own them.

Here’s some in no particular order

    iReal Pro - 1 purchase
    Worship Backing Tracks - sub
Stage Trax 3 - sub or full unlock
Show One Pro Backing Tracks - IAPs but no subscription
All apps by UK Music Apps - Seasion Band apps
Jammates - 1 purchase with additional IAP no sub - lite version to test too
Genius Jam Tracks - 1 time buy
Stage Master - sub or full unlock
Band Creator - 1 time buy, lite version too

There’s more but those are the ones I could remember.

You could totally do this with Loopy Pro.
    Koala Sampler. No.

You might be better off with a purpose built app, but I can definitely say that Loopy Pro would have totally fit the bill back when I was leading worship sets. You'd need to be prepared for a lot of experimentation and setup work though. Loopy is a tool kit, not an out of the box solution.

Every week I had a different band configuration (sometimes solo, sometimes a full band, sometimes no drummer or bass player or whatever, singers who needed key changes ... ), and a pastor fond of signaling to dwell on a chorus or drop to just solo guitar and voice or whatever. Life would have been a lot easier back then if I had Loopy Pro. 😂

  • Thank you all for your helpful answers. Stage Traxx would have been perfect, but oddly, it doesn’t include a built-in metronome. I’ll stick with ShowOne and, in the meantime, explore Loopy Pro.
