Gear out: nothing!
Gear in:
1. Another DecadeBridge drone synth: Albers. Usable in multiple ways, pairs well with my other DecadeBridge synth (Cadence).
2. After spending a large chunk of the year fighting off GAS for a Music Easel (really too expensive, in any sane/practical terms - I’d be living off gruel for years), and turning that urge into rethinking how I use what I already have (Moog Sound Studio and Mavis - the Mavis + SQ-1 in particular makes a great experimental setup), I bought a Volca Modular. For the price of the mains adapter, as I got some Amazon vouchers. Insanely good fun, scratches my West Coast itch nicely.
2025 looks hazy, prediction-wise. Possibly a Labyrinth, depends how much I need to spend on other mundane stuff! I could do with an interface with more channels, too.
Funny, a similar logic led me to get a 0-Ctrl to complement my 0-Coast, which is the only hardware I've consistenly had for years. That's the only purchase of the year, along with a few more patch cables and a stand keep both together. I also got a Bastl Kastle as a present which is fun on its own and can provide some additional audio and modulation sources for the 0-Pair.
Gear in: Digitakt 2, MicroFreak, Launchkey Mini 25 MK4, iPad Air 13
Gear out: KeyStep 37, BeatStep, Launchpad X
Want: Ableton Move
Seriously contemplating an MPC X se next year. I have a spot that it will just fit perfectly in lol
Why? Because it looks like a command centre on a starship of course!
I do change the room around so often and change my next acquisition plans all the time....and then my wife gets a new plan and the money goes on that lol
My old 4000 looks and has the heft of a cash register, but is expanded fully. The MPC X should fit your need of command station well.
Yeah, I could see me investing in an 0-Coast/0-Ctrl at some point (a Strega would be good, too!). Way more cost effective than the Buchla, lovely as it would be.
I’ve had a lot of fun with Branches paired with KB-1 on the iPad, too, even more cost effective!
And I will make a bank of Starship Enterprise sounds for it....£1800 well spent if you ask me! I bet the 4000s were designed to make you think you still had money, when they cost a bomb back in the day!
It contains the Akai Z8 sampler which ended that generation of samplers, the move to desktop systems was well underway at the time, but at least the MPC range and other hardware competitors have seen a resurgence in demand these days for samplers, long may it continue.
At least they are tabletop in design. I had a rack mount sampler and it gave me awful neck ache l9l
I started the year by getting a JoMox Moonwind 2 stereo analog filter. I still love it, it sounds beautiful.
I ended this year selling a bunch of guitar pedals and now our OB-6 is for sale at a local shop. I like it, we've had it for many years and it's been on every track we've made. But I felt like it's time for a change so we ordered the Muse. (I say we because my wife most often plays the synth parts and she'd be pretty angry if she saw me posting about My new synth.)
So we're in the red a bit until the OB-6 sells. But I'm crazy about the Muse, it's the synth I've always wanted. I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted about online. I do think the response of the keybed could be better, but I felt that way about the OB-6 as well. Actually, their keybeds feel identical to me and share the problem of very low velocities not registering. My understanding is that there is a Muse update that addresses the keybed scanning thing being beta tested now.
Also this year I bought and returned the Roland P-6. It just doesn't have enough sample time for me, I kept getting the message that the machine was full even after deleting all the factory content. The effects on it are great, though, so it was a hard decision. But I like Koala a LOT so I'm over looking around for a hardware sampler.
I hope everyone had a good 2024. I look forward to 2025, I wish for a creative and happy year for all of you.
The Muse is the first synth in a while that I actually love most of the demo sounds I’ve seen on YouTube! Really sounds like something special!
It's a little wild sounding compared to the OB-6. I love the sound of the OB-6 but I really don't want two big analog synths. The OB-6 sounded precise in comparison. Maybe precise isn't a good word for it, maybe orderly is a better word. They're both on the brassy side so I've made comparable patches, not the same but similar. The UI on the Muse is fantastic.

oh that sux.
@kyrillik you got rid of both the keystep and the beatstep, @audiblevideo you got rid of a keystep pro. What were your reasons? I ask because I've wanted a keystep for a while.
Beatstep's pads are awful, and sequencer is very fiddly. Keystep's keys OTOH are the best in the game, nothing comes close. Sequencer is, once again, pretty unusable IMO (no proper undo).
Launchkey MK4 sequencer is amazing (only works in Ableton though), pads are incredible (even better than Launchpad), DAW integration is flawless... And keys are awful
In:
Big Eurorack system (borrowed)
Korg SQ1
Live V12
MBP M4 (next week)
Launchkey (also hopefully next week)
Air 2 13”
A ton of apps
Out:
Big Eurorack system (borrowed)
I’m just about to order the mid range 25 key mk4, was going to get the Mini 25 but the keys looked a bit small - which one do you have, I’m hoping the standard range have better keys? I almost pulled the trigger on a Push 3 purchase, but the Launchkey’s look like they cover nearly all my needs for a controller.
i'd take Arturia's mini keys over Novations full size synth ones any day :x I haven't tried the weighted ones on Novation's side though.
