I’m interested in understanding why developers selling via Apple should be able to remain anonymous, whilst equally sized developers - who could also be trading from a home address - selling direct to the public, don’t have that privilege.

If you buy a book, are you entitled to knowing where the author lives? No, of course not. You're only dealing with the publisher.

Apps are very much the same deal, and Apple / App Store is the publisher.

Is it the same deal? Usually book publishers are more involved with a prospective writer to ensure their investment in printing, promoting and selling the authors work brings in a sufficient return on their investment. There may be an advance payment, or commission, special deals for best-selling authors - Apple in comparison are pretty hands-off, more like eBay than a book publisher.

Also more established writers will have their own websites, and details listed at Companies House.

I guess things are stricter for most businesses here in the UK - contact details and a privacy statement are legal requirements here.
