Your best track of 2024

Yet again here we are with a few weeks to go before the end of the year and I thought I would carry on the long tradition (it started in 2022) of having a thread for your ‘best’ track of the year…. Just one each please 🙏

Not necessarily the one that gathered the most listens, comments, likes or money 💰 but the one that, overall, you were happiest with irrespective of what anybody else thought.

After a lot of deliberation I chose this one. I think it’s because it was quickly done, fairly raw (you can hear bits of distortion) and I think has some emotion in it which is sometimes difficult when you’re playing a sheet of glass balanced on your knee 😊

  • Hey Tony - this was one of the best songs for sure. It reminds me of one of my personal heroes and main influence growing up Steve Vai. I don’t get how the geoshred works but it’s as good as having a real guitar almost. Great solo man.

  • This was mine, out of 25 songs I wrote and recorded this year.

The tone is really good here, it sounds just like a guitar, love the little moments where it breaks up as well. Nice blend of space and runs in the performance as well.

  • The 22-year anniversary remake of one of my first ever pieces of Trance. The "Medieval Waltz" intro was originally the fourth section in the original, which was a fourth section of Trance! I figured "This piece only needs three Trance sections, so let's make the fourth section the intro in the new version and make it something different than Trance.". This was also around the time TE Medieval was released, although I didn't use any samples from that.

As of this typing, "Scarlet" still has under 200 listens. 😂 Which is a little bit of a letdown (normally it isn't, but I worked hard on "Scarlet"), given the far-lower-effort "El Toro" managed to break above 1000 listens.

The one I'm most proud of :)

I'm unhappy with the mix though, the melody at 1:00 is barely audible. I should've made it louder.

Has to be Heartbreak Highway. I wish I could be more prolific.

  • I actually did this about 3 years ago when I first started this iPad music stuff, but I had a lot of fun making it.

I often think about leaving here because I find some people here just so argumentative and almost looking for drama, then I listen to the wonderful music here and that's why I stay. Some of you peeps are so wonderfully talented.

such a skilfully played piece. I listen to your tracks for inspiration :)

while not always to me taste in genre, I listen to your music for song structure and that wonderful guitar tone you use :)

Trance is definietly not my thing, but you made this interesting and foot tapping fun. I listen to your music for its inventive nature and your skills in track building :)

While it didn't get many listens, I managed to use a lot I had learnt of late in this track and I think it showed a step up from my tracks I wasn't finishing last year lol

Will listen to everyone else’s tracks tomorrow as it’s spend time with the wife time…..

  • Probably this one from back in February. The simpler ones seem to hold up better over time. The choice of instruments works well here. And it has a steady progression that I'm not always able to achieve or sustain throughout.

    It's titled The Mountain.

  • I remember this one, love the funkiness of the bass and horns.

  • My Halloween track was my year’s best, maybe my all time best.

  • Top level work! I love film noir and your playing.

Personal favorite this year. What’s not to like, it’s in 4/7 time and it’s my daughters Audiobus debut.
    …if 4/7 time is a thing..?

  • This, I guess.

  • Mine is a nighttime piano improv piece called ‘Walking the path’. I posted an MP3 (and MIDI) of it here: https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/comment/1307856/#Comment_1307856

  • I'd better quick make a track I like so I can post it here! 🤠

Listening to this years efforts I enjoyed reacquainting myself with this one… I can still recall the “question and answer” process of improvising various parts… there’s some joy in making something in StaffPad without using the damn pencil… just live MIDI data entry:

The ending does seem like a bolt on segment tho’…

I really enjoyed, you don't hear music like this often nowadays.

I just decided to do a new vocal recording for one of my songs from this year after reading and listening to some of your tracks here.

Would also be a nice way to round off an otherwise somewhat musically frustrating year.

    Thanks for the inspiration :)

  • I finished mastering my last project. Gave some time to your best of 2024. Have to say the overall quality is really impressive. And all of you are mostly unknown. makes me sad.

Definitely not my favorite in your creations, but I think i get why you chose it. But again, it would impossible for me to decide which one is your best since all of your work is of great quality, sound and harmony wise.

It has your unique signature. I'm a huge fan of your work, no exception here. your voice, the sound design, the sometimes ambiguous harmony is haunting. Great piece of music.

I never know what to say about your work man, so I mostly stay silent. Most of the time I'm totally the opposite of the intended audience, but I still can recognize the love you put in your work, the attention to detail, and the incredible creativity of yours.
Here I love the intro, but the rest is really not really for me, but I appreciate the perfect mix and sound design. It's just not my stuff. I wish you ventured in other musical realms, I know you have the talent.

This kind of workflow I simply don't comprehend. It is totally alien to me. That being said, it is working really well for you.
The mix is the mix. I woud have done it differently, but that is the case with most music I listen to. All that matters is i liked this tune and the "intention" I felt while listening.

another piece of music that is not really for me. Still can recognize the work you put in this work. I'm confident the target audience would love it, all is good here, the notes, the choices of synths, the mix, the way vocals are processed. This is good work.

I'm also fan of your work and your (to me) incredibly alien workflow. I just close my eyes and enjoys your music. I can't say more than I already said. It's just so good.

I had a love hate relationship with this music genre. Now It's mostly love. And I love this one. The lead synth lines are absolutely great. that would have been an International hit back in the days. The production is perfect.

great inspiration here, an nice homage to the genre. It is the kind of musical story telling I enjoy the most. i totally love it.

while not for me, I found it interesting, and actually couldn't help listening until the end: there was something weirdly hypnotic, and after the too short 2 minutes I was like: WTAF???? it's over???? and I wanted more. This makes no sense to me, but I got totally caught in this weird ( in the good sense ot it) musical universe.

Someday you will make some music I don't like. maybe. sublime harmony here. The second half made me feel like 5 minutes were definitely too short; something else was coming but it didn't come.

I hope I didn't miss anyone. The last 40 minutes were well spent. You all deserve to be known.

  • @jo92346 props for taking the time to listen and to comment on everyone's contribution to this thread. A very thoughtful effort.

    👏👏👏👏

  • Also @jo92346 - what do you consider your best track this year to be? You have written so many, I am really curious to know which one was your favourite.

  • @richardyot I really don't know. I don't really like any of them once they are done. Especially if i listen to it one week later.

  • Yes definitely has something. You should carry on with this track :)

Always difficult to give an opinion on something when it has a style choice that I don't like: being the fx on the vocal. I love the sounds and arrangement though, so it was easy to ignore the effect on the vocal, as its just personal preference anyway. Great track.

I haven't listened to everything you've posted this year, but I do remember this series based on the mist being exceptional:

  • Very enjoyable. Particularly liked the little frantic quick piece in the middle :)

Lots of fun. Reminded me of later album Thomas Dolby!

Another beautiful track. I can't watch your videos anymore as they give me headaches, but your music is very relaxing :)

  • Wonderful electronica meets Her Ghost in the Fog with B movie aesthetic :)

Wonderfully emotive. Just happened to make me throughly depressed though :)

  • Definitely my sort of music. Loved it. Didn't notice the 'bolt on' you mentioned all fitted great imo
