Mela 6 by Nikolozi Meladze (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mela-6-auv3-synth-fx-midi/id1668299428

Mela 6.0 kicks off a new chapter in the app's evolution, starting with unifying all lane types into a universal one for greater flexibility. The updated Getting Started guide explains how key concepts have evolved-be sure to check it out, along with the changelog, for a quick overview. This is just the beginning, with much more to come in the upcoming 6.x updates.

Universal Lane

  • All lane types (Audio, MIDI, Instrument) are now unified into a single universal lane with merged capabilities.
  • The preset migrator automatically converts existing presets to use universal lanes.
  • Lane audio and MIDI 1/0 settings are replaced with Signal Router modules.
  • Signal Routers: Audio In, Audio Out, MIDI In, MIDI Out, MIDI-to-Poly, and Poly-to-Audio.
  • These modules are part of Collection O.

Audio In/Out Modules

  • Audio In receives Audio signals from the host or an Audio bus.
  • Audio Out sends Audio signals to the host or an Audio bus.

MIDI In/Out Modules

  • MIDI In receives MIDI messages from the host or a MIDI bus.
  • MIDI In includes a "Panic!" button to send "All Notes Off" MIDI messages downstream on all channels.
  • MIDI Out sends MIDI messages to the host or a MIDI bus.
  • MIDI Out a "Panic!" button to send "All Notes Off" MIDI messages on all channels to the output.

MIDI-to-Poly Module

  • The module converts MIDI messages into a Poly signal, replacing any existing Audio or Poly signal with a new Poly signal.
  • The module lets you set the polyphony settings for the preset.
  • Instances sharing the same MIDI input synchronise voice allocation, ensuring consistent Poly-to-Poly modulation across modules.
  • The Voice Priority rule is replaced with a
"Release" setting, clarifying how voices are reallocated for new notes.

  • Previously, this functionality was handled implicitly by the Instrument lane type before sending the Poly signal to modules.

Poly-to-Audio Module

  • Collapses a Poly signal into an Audio signal by summing voices while retaining the last note-on
    Pitch signal.

  • Modules that don't support Poly signals automatically perform this collapse.

  • The signal remains collapsed even if the collapsing module is bypassed.
  • Previously, this functionality was handled implicitly by the Instrument lane type before sending the Audio signal to its output.

Module Updates

  • Amp Envelope: Now mirrors the behaviour of the Envelope Generator. When no Poly signal is present, it uses MIDI signals to trigger attack and release states, shaping the Audio signal accordingly.
  • Panic Module: Removed, as the functionality is now integrated into the MIDI In and MIDI Out modules.
  • Voice Activity: Now displays Audio signal levels and MIDI signal's last note and velocity when no Poly signal is present.
  • Voice Activity: Now automatically resizes based on the preset polyphony.
  • Modulators: The "Targets" view no longer scrolls to the bottom on appearance.

Improvements

  • Getting Started: Updated to reflect the latest changes.
  • Notepad: Renamed the Note Pad module to Notepad.

Fixes

  • Module Help: Fixed the help popover not utilizing available space correctly.
  • Preset Load: Resolved a crash that occurred under certain conditions when changing presets.
  • Polyphony Settings: Fixed an issue with the Newest Release mode not initialising correctly.
  • Modulators: Modules without parameters, such as Notepad, no longer appear as modulation targets.

  • I forgot I have this synth! I will have some fun diving in today.

  • Great to see updates, but just one concern: will the name change be problematic in projects in Logic where I’ve used it? I’ve recently dumped all my old projects to external storage so can’t check at this time, but just wondered :)

  • Requires at least iOS 18.0. I hope this will be changed. Until then showstopper for me.

  • Anyway to check the “getting started” as a pdf or as a webpage? I don’t own mela but I would like to read it as I’ve been on the fence for ages (sorry I suffer from TMSS, too many synths syndrome)

    Same here! :-(

  • 18? I guess my iPad will stick with stuff that works on 17.

  • Thanks @ninobeatz, for sharing the news.

I want to note a couple of things. First, Mela 6 is not a separate app, and your copy of Mela 5 will automatically update to Mela 6, you don’t need to take any action. The Collections you purchased will remain unlocked. Second, Mela’s features have dramatically evolved since version 4.0, and the Introducing Mela 4 tutorial is slightly out of date. I will create a new “Introducing Mela 6” series sometime after the Mela 6.1 release, which will be especially useful for beginners.

The name change won't affect them, all AUv3s have unique IDs internally, which hosts use to identify them. So your existing projects with Mela 5 will continue to work as if nothing changed, they will just load Mela 6.

When Mela 5 was released, Nikolozi said that each new (annual) version would only support the current iOS version. So that's not likely to change, unfortunately.

Mela 6 is a free download, and you can read Getting Started inside it. But you can also read it on my site https://nikolozi.com/mela/getting-started/.

That's correct. For those that are interested, I have a detailed answer to that question on the FAQ page, as it comes up frequently: https://nikolozi.com/mela/faq/

Those still on iOS 17 can continue using Mela 5.8.3 and once you update iOS Mela will auto-update to 6.x version.

Yep this is a major reason I haven't invested in the latest Mela as it's been stated as current iOS version only by the dev. My older device stops at iOS 17 so I'm out too. I wouldn't ever spend money on guaranteed obsolescence, especially not a $50 investment.

I'm not critiquing your approach. But just want to clarify one detail. If a user downloaded Mela 5 on iOS 17, it's not like it will stop working. They just won't get new features. Otherwise, things they've always used in Mela will still be there. Just like iOS, if you are on iOS 17, you will not have access to iOS 18 features, but iOS 17 will continue to work on your device.

This doesn't affect my installation which is iOS 18, but interested whether this affects reinstallations. If a user on iOS17 removes the app or resets their device, are they able to re-download the compatible Mela version?

That is good to know and with that ability, I think this makes a really good sales model personally 👍

  • so it's $60 for a whole new version of the app? a bit pricey for a synth...

You don’t have to purchase all module collections at once. Even with just Collection 0, which is free, you have access to some of the most feature-rich modules, such as Arpeggiator, VA Oscillator, VA Filter, LFO, and Stereo Delay. Purchasing Collection 1 grants full access to a total of 42 modules, which should be more than sufficient to create custom polyphonic synthesisers, unique audio effects, and complex MIDI processors. Additionally, modules that you haven’t purchased still process and generate sound. This means you can use all factory presets as well as any other Mela preset created by anyone, even if those presets use modules you don’t own.

My recommendation is to only purchase modules when you find yourself needing to use their UI.

  • I've really been enjoying the journey with Mela. It's more of a bespoke modular environment than synth per se these days, with almost the same diversity of choice with regard to module types as you have in something like miRack.

Looking forward to experiencing where things head in 2025.

Good to hear, thank you for your support.

I also don't view it as just a synth, in the app description, I describe it as a modular music-making tool.

Mela is way more than "a synth".
And it is probably not for everyone.
The collection system is great because it is a win-win for user and developer.
For me, it is absolutely worth the price and like @jonmoore, i'm also looking forward where it is heading.

Hi ... "obsolescence" isn't the right word on reflection, and I get that it iOS and Mela 5 will continue working of course, that's obvious. But it does seem to place a cap on the benefits that can be received going forwards.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, but with Mela 6 now released, at some point soon I'm guessing development will stop on Mela 5? If so, as new modules are added to the Mela 6 collections, will they also be added/updated in the Mela 5 collections too?

If not, then for me this is a significant disincentive to invest in Mela 5, knowing that at some point the Mela 5 road reaches an end, while Mela 6 users will enjoy new functionality and updates for the same price that would have been paid for the now capped Mela 5.

I do understand that as a solo dev you have to target your development efforts and have decided not to provide support for older iOS versions, that's an understandable business decision, but not supporting even one version back has consequences. I do wish you every success with Mela, but I for one am not able to continue on that journey with you.

    Edge case, sure, but I'm morbidly curious;

What happens if someone buys it on an IOS18 device, has to sell/downgrade to a device with a lower version compatibility, will they have access to Mela 5 still as well?

Congrats on the release! Looks super exciting from reading the feature list but I’m not ready for iOS 18 just yet 😞

Edit: I also believe the a-la-carte, collection system pricing of Mela is great system. Works for me and hopefully works for the developer too.

  • I have one issue with Mela. Each time I go to mess about with it, 3 hours passes and I’ve made no music just played about with the app lol. I hate to think what it will be like when I actually learn what I’m doing!
