Requires at least iOS 18.0. I hope this will be changed. Until then showstopper for me.

Yep this is a major reason I haven't invested in the latest Mela as it's been stated as current iOS version only by the dev. My older device stops at iOS 17 so I'm out too. I wouldn't ever spend money on guaranteed obsolescence, especially not a $50 investment.

I'm not critiquing your approach. But just want to clarify one detail. If a user downloaded Mela 5 on iOS 17, it's not like it will stop working. They just won't get new features. Otherwise, things they've always used in Mela will still be there. Just like iOS, if you are on iOS 17, you will not have access to iOS 18 features, but iOS 17 will continue to work on your device.

Hi ... "obsolescence" isn't the right word on reflection, and I get that it iOS and Mela 5 will continue working of course, that's obvious. But it does seem to place a cap on the benefits that can be received going forwards.

Owning Mela 5 means you own Mela 6, as it's the same app and not a different entry in the App Store. i.e. If you bought Collections 1-3 they will all get updated plus all other app features, you just need to update the OS. You get all the benefits and free updates; you just need to run iOS 18.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, but with Mela 6 now released, at some point soon I'm guessing development will stop on Mela 5? If so, as new modules are added to the Mela 6 collections, will they also be added/updated in the Mela 5 collections too?

"Development will stop for Mela 5" statement doesn't make sense, as it's not a separate app. Users can't just download the v5 of the app. The system will only let you download v5.8.3 if you are on iOS 17, otherwise it will download the latest 6.x version.

(As a side note, Mela 6 will introduce Collection 4, again as an optional purchase)

If not, then for me this is a significant disincentive to invest in Mela 5, knowing that at some point the Mela 5 road reaches an end, while Mela 6 users will enjoy new functionality and updates for the same price that would have been paid for the now capped Mela 5.

Again, that framing doesn't make sense, because you also have access to the same benefits once you update iOS. It's like using iOS 17 and being unhappy that Apple is not giving you iOS 18 benefits on iOS 17.

I do understand that as a solo dev you have to target your development efforts and have decided not to provide support for older iOS versions, that's an understandable business decision, but not supporting even one version back has consequences. I do wish you every success with Mela, but I for one am not able to continue on that journey with you.

    Fair enough. Yes, I agree, there's a trade-off.

This doesn't affect my installation which is iOS 18, but interested whether this affects reinstallations. If a user on iOS17 removes the app or resets their device, are they able to re-download the compatible Mela version?

If you bought the app while on iOS 17 you will always have the ability to download the older version on your older device.

    Edge case, sure, but I'm morbidly curious;

What happens if someone buys it on an IOS18 device, has to sell/downgrade to a device with a lower version compatibility, will they have access to Mela 5 still as well?

Yes, if you try to download it with a device on iOS 17, it will download an older version.

If you are in a scenario where you have 2 devices running different versions of Mela keep in mind, that once you open and save a preset with the newer version of Mela you won't be able to open it with the older one. The newer version will migrate the preset to the latest format.

Congrats on the release! Looks super exciting from reading the feature list but I’m not ready for iOS 18 just yet 😞

Edit: I also believe the a-la-carte, collection system pricing of Mela is great system. Works for me and hopefully works for the developer too.

That's good to hear. Thank you!

I have one issue with Mela. Each time I go to mess about with it, 3 hours passes and I’ve made no music just played about with the app lol. I hate to think what it will be like when I actually learn what I’m doing!

Haha, I hear you. I'm like that sometimes. Especially after I implement a new module, I end up having too much fun by combining it with other modules in different ways.

It's not like that at all! As mentioned earlier I can't update my device - it's too old! I'm stuck on iOS 17 permanently. So the framing makes perfect sense I think :)

Do you have any plans to buy a new iPad? I haven’t bought a new iPad Pro because I prefer the old 1/8” audio jack for my headphones… but that’s not the fault of this developer.

Hopefully at some point but I'm surprised at how well the iPad Pro 2017 holds up with modern apps, even in a fairly busy AUM set. I've just had it replaced on the Apple battery replacement scheme so it's good for a while I reckon. Don't have the funds to replace it right now in any case. Fresh battery makes such a difference. I'm also pretty partial to the headphone socket!!

I want to note a couple of things. First, Mela 6 is not a separate app, and your copy of Mela 5 will automatically update to Mela 6, you don’t need to take any action. The Collections you purchased will remain unlocked. Second, Mela’s features have dramatically evolved since version 4.0, and the Introducing Mela 4 tutorial is slightly out of date. I will create a new “Introducing Mela 6” series sometime after the Mela 6.1 release, which will be especially useful for beginners.

Thank you so much for the unpaid upgrade to 6. I’ve purchased many versions of Ámala over the years, and I appreciate you grandfathering in Mela 5 users. Mela is top-notch, I’m sure you work very hard, and you deserve to get paid. So thank you so much for this. I’m excited to dive in!

Congratulations on the new release! I continue to be impressed anew with each iteration of Mela, since I first picked up Mela 3.

Some clarity on the lab modules, please. Which ones are available now? I don’t see “graduated Euclid,” mentioned in a changelog last year, in the pulldown menu. Should it be there, or was it incorporated into the other Euclidean module or retired? As of now, I see reverb, audio to mod, and multiply-add as lab modules.

(Also I thought I saw a midi capture module a few days ago, a module separate from the logger. I don’t see one now, but I might be thinking of a different plugin?)

    Thanks again, Nik. Remarkable work.

A bunch of them graduated. It's mentioned in 5.8.2 changlog entry. You can now find Euclid under the MIDI Processor category.

Yes, Mela has the "MIDI Capture" module, it's under the Utility category.

  • I'm considering dropping "6" from the app title and just keeping it as Mela. It seems a lot of users assumed it was a separate app from Mela 5. Mela 4/5/6 is the same app, it just has title updates to indicate the phase changes of the app evolution. However, since other developers use such numbering to indicate a separate app entry in the App Store, some users assumed it was the same with Mela. So, when I release Mela v6.1, I will consider stopping using the numbering system. Let me know your thoughts.

Since it's all the same app, the numbering system can be confusing. Perhaps simply calling it the Mela Synthesizer is enough. And then in the body of the update text list which version it is?

Yes, Mela without the number seems OK to me. Should help stem some of the confusion

Just to add. I do like the monetary model of this app. I struggle at times justifying spending a certain amount on individual apps, but splitting the cost by buying certain features at a time with little detriment to the use of the app made buying this much more palatable. Other apps do similar with features, but making all the features usable in a preset, just not adjustable, is quite a good idea. I really hope that this app maintains longevity because of this approach, as it’s obvious to me that if devs get no income for continued development and upkeep of an app, then it will eventually become unsustainable if sales drop too far.

Thanks for the input guys. Another reason I maintained the version number was to distinguish it from the (classic) Mela 3, with a static module layout. And it remains in the App Store because some users do like the older approach or even prefer it. So, I will also rename Mela 3 to Mela Classic (as @Luxthor suggested a while back). Hopefully, this new naming approach will be less confusing to the users.

I'm working on adding grouping. Like Stacks and Sublanes, it's all WIP at the moment. Also, the ability to create feedback and modules that make life a bit easier. You can see what's currently in beta on the feedback site: https://mela-feedback.nikolozi.com

Cheers! It took a lot of experimenting, and I think this pricing model works for most users. You never get locked out from what you paid for and still get a lot of free upgrades. And if you find some new modules exciting you can purchase corresponding Collections whenever to unlock their UIs.

Many of us still love Mela3, it’s already a classic in a sense. Renaming it to Mela Classic is just revealing its true name. The same thing is with NFM. If you decide to continue to work on NFM, it could be even better. And then there is MELA, the ultimate synth/tool.

    Mela's future is bright! 🤩

I want to do an "FM6" module in Mela. It will mimic NFM's Algorithm view, and each Operator will be a sublane, with fully custom module chains. This is all theoretical, but I think it will be pretty epic if it works out.

    Mela's future is bright! 🤩
