Idea: an Interactive and collaborative creation thread / forum section.

I know some people collaborate here, but that is a more behind the scenes and then posting activity. It is for the most part a one to one process and then posting activity for consumption- all great stuff.

I would like to look at an idea for something different, that I know could have some issues, but might be worth exploring more.

When I listen to a creation, I often envisage a process of thought and action. I am interested in both. I then often think….what if this sound was here, or if the whole track was chopped up in this fashion and style….lots of what ifs when I listen to music….any music, even my own.

To this end, I’m trying to figure out a way we could have a collaboration thread where we can post music and material that made that music, such as stems or midi etc for others to use then post their own interpretations, rehashes, remixes etc…..

Each post would include a piece of original music by the person posting. A brief or long discussion the processes, ideas and music tech used (yes, some people like this stuff), some loops, stems, midi, presets etc.

Then we could discuss what people produce using the material for our ideas.

Problems I envisage and ideas that need further discussion:

What sort of environment? A thread, a forum section?

How do we share the material easily and safely?

Are there any issues with ownership of the material etc?

Is anyone even interested?

Why? I think that we have many people that visit this forum that don’t post anything, because of various reasons, such as skill level, new to the forum etc. I just think the more musical things we present for people to interact with here, we may improve forum participation and help some people that have other issues such as social and mental health issues.

What do people think? Please if possible post positive ideas as well as any possible issues that I’ve missed.

  • I posted an acoustic guitar recording here which inadvertently turned into a collaboration with a few other forum members. It was interesting to see how the music evolved with each iteration. I'd definitely like to see more of this and usually enable the download link of creations posted for anyone who would like to add something. Perhaps there could be a Collaboration Library to share drum loops, guitar samples, vocals, etc. for members to 'borrow'.

I mean a long time ago I had an idea for a thread called “collaboration corner”

It was meant to be basically a BB so if someone was working on a track or wanted to work with someone on a track, they could post, what they were doing and what partnership they were seeking

Likewise people who were out of ideas could peruse the classifieds and see a synth wave dude needs a guitarist and you want to play guitar with a synth wiz or whatever , you can contact them

Does this sound like a good way to try it ? And Does a “collaboration corner” need a thread or a sticky in creations maybe?

It could be for any type of collaborator too, like it’s not limited to a specific request / but I mean ideally what would you want to see beyond that??

Let me know; I’m here to serve :)

Yes, I asked someone on here for their 4 track challenge tracks and made my own mix which ended up using the guys midi, but really sounded different once I’d chopped it all up. It’s such an enjoyable thing it’s just how to make it easier for people and more of a common occurrence, if many here would be interested?

Thanks for posting a reply and a positive suggestion :)

Yes, again interesting thoughts and ideas. What do people think? How do we best go about this type of thing? Hopefully if enough people post ideas, a plan may form from us all in the end :)

  • will leave this thread to see if any more ideas are posted and in a week or so maybe we can discuss it further see if we can all come up with some suggestions to make a plan we can action :)

  • We can share and collaborate on the discord.
Its much easier to share ideas and team up in a chat then on a forum for something like this. You can share videos and files much easier.
We could open up a collaboration thread there.

  • I think a collaboration corner on this forum is a great idea! I actually created a thread about that a few months ago and tagged @Michael and @thesoundtestroom in it. I'll tag @wim and @yellow_eyez too since they're now mods.

@reasOne has a good point. A forum is less real-time interactive than something like a Discord channel. It might work better. On the other hand, I think there are storage limits, archiving and stuff that a Discord channel may run into. I don't know much about it really, but know that stuff falls off the map after a time, and you have to find it on an archive or something.

I dunno. I'm not motivated to understand Discord. I don't even like to go there, but do to keep up with apps that I care about such as Loopy Pro, Koala, AUM and EG Notes.

I tried Discord for a while, and yeah. File size limits unless you get the Turbo sub kinda sucks. I use Dropbox for all my file hosting anyways. I would prefer to just collab here.

@wim @yellow_eyez @reasOne @jwmmakerofmusic @michael @Fruitbat1919 We could try changing the name of the Creations category to Creation & Collaborations, we do seem to be having a lot of categories, it may start to get confusing if we add too many.
But if everyone else thinks an independent Collaborations category is better then I’d be happy with that😊

  • Yeah, I'd rather not create toooo many categories, there's already so many. I'm happy with renaming "Creations". Or repurposing it.

  • Oh I definitely agree @Michael and @Doug
(In fact I also think we can do away with some sub categories , but we can revisit that later ;) )

That’s why I was just suggesting a “sticky thread” within creations - but a normal thread would be just the same ofc….

when I first came up with “kollaboration korner” it was for a server; but I think keeping it consolidated in a single thread would be better than multiple “classifieds” in a collab sub section

Less organizing - more generalizing I say

    • to be clear - no more sub categories moving forward :)

And I’ll also add, while I think it’s great to have dialogue, and we’re always open to taking suggestions, and working with improving and expanding ideas, your friendly mod team can handle the rest from here, I think it’s great when we talk about improvement but I worry sometimes restructuring might seem to be a little too much like a communal effort, (when it’s really not in the end) , we ultimately will have to decide the best move as a team, so, please just have faith in our ability to be of service , especially once all 4 of us have showed we are weighing in and working on a topic/issue brought to our attention

    Love yall
    Merry Christmas :D

  • Nice to see some ideas and input.

I tend to agree that it's best keeping the idea for open collaboration on here and using links to Dropbox etc with folders containing the material you want to share seems the best approach. I see collaboration off the site as more and agreement between people, where this is for anyone to have a go with the supplied material.,I think this will best encourage new involvement. I will join you guys on the Discord soon though when I'm shown what I'm meant to do as my try with Discord for Nodes was unsuccessful lol

If it becomes part of the Creations thread, should we agree a standard for titles so that newcomers are more aware that it is a thread that is for collaboration and not just consumption of music?

For myself I want to see more involvement in creative endeavours on here as well as the usual app chat and drama threads. If people don't think this is the place, then so be it. I won't throw the baby out with the bath water and leave, as it does work well to chat about apps for myself and I still love listening to the wonderful creations on show :)

Okay, a slight renaming it is. Cheers. 🍻

  • Wifey on her Christmas hols now, so won't be here as much for a while, so will hopefully post some links to material after Christmas..

    Merry Christmas all :)

This is a great idea! In the absence of a category, I think a title tag like [Sample Flip] or [Open Collab] might do the trick. If enough people use the same wording, it might catch on.

On the other hand, I think there are versions of this forum software that support official title tags, but don’t quote me on it.

It was remixing your 4 track challenge that gave me the idea :)

    Aw, cool

  • Great to see that their is now a Collaboration section in with Creations.

I was going to quickly post something to get the open material for Collaboration underway and guess what happened?

I had complete brain freeze. After finishing about 10 tracks and countless demos in the last two months, I just couldn't make anything!

  • I feel you. I have an overabundance of four bar loops, but not much completed. 👍

I get you what you wanted and you totally cast it aside . I’m so hurt you weren’t ready to start a song with me :(
    Jk lol

Congrats - your wishhh is granted haha

I think we can do something cool too like this

    Genre - EDM
    BPM - 120
    Scale - Lydian
    Status - partial competition
Seeking - someone to add melodic elements and some percussion

And then see if someone responds to that ad criteria??????

Pretty much what I had in mind. I was going to post some drum tracks, some bass and a synth loop in both audio and midi with Scale and BPM and just let people do what they want with it. Personally I’m not bothered by Genre, but it’s really an individual thing what people want - I’m more here’s a few tracks, now go chop it, use the midi, write your own new tracks, warp it….whatever lol.

I will post something as soon as my mojo returns after Christmas….maybe it’s too much Turkey?

  • By the way, here’s a site focused on collaborations in case any are interested in expanding their horizons: https://ibandstand.com/

Hoping to get more people to join up. There used to be a site called iCollaborations.com but it went under after the owner decided to get out. Too much work. So this site sort of took up the mantle. They allow 1 song upload to your personal page per day, so it can take a while to fill out your profile, but it's worth it as a free service and for connecting with likeminded musicians who are looking to work on music together. It's a mix of pros and amateurs, so there's always something different.

That looks very, very interesting. Thanks for sharing the link. I'm going to consider joining.
