The January 2025 "10+ Minute Ambient Piece" Challenge
So, I was debating about what to do for a challenge for January 2025. Someone suggested a 2-minute track challenge, which sounds fun and we could do that for February 2025. However, here's what I'd like us to do.
I want each of us who will participate to build a piece of Ambient that lasts at least 10 minutes long. You can live perform it in AUM/Drambo/ApeMatrix/etc or simply lay it out in a DAW. You can use whatever synths, samples, field recordings, etc that you wish, whatever effects that you wish, etc. It doesn't matter if you want to produce Dark Ambient, Classic Ambient, Space Ambient, or whatever type of Ambient. It can be tonal, or atonal, or both over the length of 10+ minutes.
The only requirements of the challenge are the piece must be at least 10 minutes long, and you must upload it to either SoundCloud, to Youtube, to Bandcamp, or even just to cloud storage and provide us an easily-accessible public link to listen. And if you plan to upload to Youtube, bonus points if you add visuals to the piece and/or a screen recording of you performing it live.
(For the record, if you have a very long-ass reverb tail after the dry audio finishes, that can definitely count as part of the 10+ minutes if you so choose. 😂 )
A soft deadline of January 31st is encouraged, but anyone can enter even after the deadline. Good luck.
And if you're brand new to Ambient and need to do a little research into it, here's a great Youtube channel to get you started.

Cheers. 🍻

I'm in. I say that for most challenges and never finish anything lol 😆 this one I know I can do. And happy new year mate
I might give that a go - usually now 10mins is a bit short for me, and although I have heard rumours of music with tempos above 120bpm, I'm gravitating to 100bpm if I'm feeling a bit energetic :-)
Oh, it's 10+ minutes, not 10 minutes exactly. Shee, if you want to craft Ambient that lasts for over an hour, and you have unlimited upload time on whichever platform you choose to upload to, that's even better!
Happy new year to you too mate. And yes, if you get stuck and just want to finish up, use Alteza (even if at the very tail end) to finish the piece for you with its super long-ass reverb tail. 😂
Can i just place the song, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, in Paul Stretch and convert it to a 10 minute track?
🤪
If that's all you wanna do for your Ambient piece, lol, then I guess that's valid enough. You can stretch it to 15 minutes or more if you really wanted to.
If anybody is interested the soundcloud pro limit for recommendations is 10 minutes as per this message...
‘ This track isn’t eligible for recommendation yet. For your track to be analyzed and recommended it must be under 10 minutes long - try uploading a shorter version so you can reach the right audience’…
Just thought I’d mention it 😊
Oh I'm well aware of that, lol. I use Soudcloud Pro all the time. I figured this would be more about the art and less about the popularity (although the latter would be a nice cherry on top to be fair).
Ten minutes! Will anyone ever hear more than 2 minutes of it? Hahaa
I’ll do an ambient jam, but I’m not too sure I’ll make it that long,,,, I’ll just pop alteza and black hole on after forever mode once I’m finished 🤣
I'm in!
LOL! Sounds like a plan. Yeah, reverb tails are legit for extending something to 10 minutes. 😂
Right on, my friend! 😃
After all the tracks have been submitted here for listening, couldn't one of us (yes I am volunteering), share to Bandcamp, so we have a central place to listen and download?
I like the idea of this, and it might tie in with the New Year’s resolution thread.
Bandcamp sounds like a plan. Although I plan to upload to Soundcloud. (I've kind of ditched Bandcamp. 😅 )
This is true. It definitely could tie in with that thread.
Very true @reasOne … if you look at the stats very few of us make it past the first few minutes.
Makes you wonder how Wagner, Beethoven etc ever managed 😊
No social media back in the 1700s and 1800s. 😂
Nor pr0n websites. They probably had to make do with reading a few saucy scrolls.
Had to search pr0n… thought it was something to do with prunes… Imagine my surprise 😳
Hahahaha
Oh no, @michael_m spoiled Tony's innocence. 😂 Bwahaha.
That’s what she sa…no wait…oops!
I didn’t put a New Year’s resolution in the thread @GeoTony started, but if I had one, it would be to branch out and embrace different styles of music. So, in that spirit this is my first Ambient track ever.
I made this while waiting for the New Year to come.
Hope you all had a great New Year’s Eve and all the best in the future.
Mac
This was amazing Mac! Loved every minute of it. For your first try with Ambient, that was incredibly tops.
Thank you @jwmmakerofmusic
I've listened to a few of your tracks and other people's as well and I don't think I could ever do it as well as you all do, but it was a fun experience.
I appreciate you taking the initiative to come up with these challenges and being supportive of the people who participate. It helps make the forum feel like a welcoming space.
Happy New Year to you.
Happy New Year to you too mate. I like coming up with these challenges. It's a way to build up our community. ❤️ And trust me, there's no such thing as "doing it as well as others". There is "try to do our best and keep growing as artists". Comparing my tracks to yours, I could've sworn you had a firmer grasp on more atonal Ambient than I do. ☺️
I know I will jump ahead when checking out multiple 10 minute creations… like an A&R rep going through unsolicited tapes seeking for something worthwhile. Time is something no one should waste so here’s my attempt at an ambient project lasting 10 minutes.
I started by seeking a good use for the new AUM Clock divider/multiply feature… it didn’t provide much that I liked in this context of timeless music… so I loaded up my first attempt into an AUM file player and added it to the project and started tweaking the “rate” control in the file player to get sections where the tuning can be manipulated in realtime. The best example happens at 9:58… just jump ahead.
A very cool and trippy piece @McD .
I think by the end of this month I'm going to have a whole new appreciation for the ambient genre. With so many clever people here it looks like this month's challenge is going to be incredibly entertaining.
Really excellent work! Just gave this a listen while typing out another thread here, and it was so nice. I like the rate control manipulation. What a cool idea. Cheers.
Here is my entry for this month's challenge. Hope you all enjoy.
I really like the bass synth. It cuts gently through the high echoing tones.
