The January 2025 "10+ Minute Ambient Piece" Challenge

    OK @jwmmakerofmusic your hope is realized.🙂

    This piece is a 1 minute loop in Koala repeated 10 times, with small variations, of 9 small piano samples.

    The pad is provided by my beloved Dusty Ring Keys in Decent Sampler.

    Again, please let me know if I’m flooding the thread. I may not be done.

    No such thing as flooding the thread, bestie. I really loved this piece. Sorry it took me a while to get to listening to it. I'd lose my head if it weren't attached to my neck. 😂

  • Here’s a couple of pieces I’ve done for this challenge.

    First: three Gauss loops phasing against each other, all notes and phrases created with Apesoft Electric Vintage through Flip EQ and Rymdigare, with Stellarvox on the output bus. Set up and recorded in AUM.

    Next: a generative MiRack patch using a small fixed rack of mainly Mutable Instruments modules, fed through Flip EQ in AUM for recording.

    I’ve been avoiding listening to other people’s work until I’d finished these, so hopefully I can now have a good listening session!

  • @madeofwax
    Love the darkness of this, and the claustrophobia. If you hadn’t said it was your first ambient piece I wouldn’t have guessed.

    @mcd
    This is definitely worth a full listen. The speed changes are maybe a little too abrupt in a couple of places so (for me) they break the mood a bit, but it’s an interesting approach, and a great way to repurpose something that didn’t quite work in its original form.

    @jwmmakerofmusic
    NYD 2025 - This is leaps and bounds ahead of what you were making during your last ambient period. Beautiful!

    Bending Reality - I’m starting to write this while listening (11 minutes in), and ditto re how you’ve come on with this stuff. It’s phenomenal. The quiet section about 20 minutes in is particularly lovely. As for the length, I’m a Klaus Schulze fan, 30 minutes is normal to short :-) (I’m at the end now, and my opinion hasn’t changed - this is really good!)

    @davidenglish
    Both tracks are lovely, though if pushed I’d say I like Equilibrium slightly more. I have no idea why.

    @peanut_gallery
    This is great, and I’m seriously impressed that you improvised it live.

    @rottencat
    I’m particularly enamoured of Gesture and Frieze, but playing through all of your entries has been really enjoyable. You’ve basically done an album!

    @tubespace
    Pleasingly unsettling! I like.

    @fruitbat1919
    Maybe not ambient, but I agree on pffft to genres and the genre police. Sounds great, anyway.

  • @rottencat I agree with @bygjohn , you'e basically done an entire album bestie! And of really excellent Ambient at that. Speaking of excellent Ambient...

    @bygjohn Your two pieces are absolutely excellent too mate. :) Now that said...

    NYD 2025 - This is leaps and bounds ahead of what you were making during your last ambient period. Beautiful!

    Thank you so much, my friend. :) Yeah, my last Ambient period in Summer 2022 was pretty fun, but I won't lie. Most of the pieces I made were mid at best. The only piece from that era I find myself liking is "I Shall Guide Thee". That's really it. The other pieces were pieces of noisy rubbish. 😂 I mean, I tried my best for the time to be the next David Lynch, but it just wasn't all that great to be honest. All I did was use PaulXStretch and some random bits and bobs to craft live Ambient in AUM rather than actually making an effort. 🤣

    Bending Reality - I’m starting to write this while listening (11 minutes in), and ditto re how you’ve come on with this stuff. It’s phenomenal. Thank you so much again. ❤️ I love Klaus Schulze's music, who we honestly lost too soon. Dude released 60+ albums though, so a huge catalogue of works! I will say I'm grateful for Soundcloud. Honestly I don't have much patience making an album myself. 😂 Well, that is unless I make a huge longform piece of Ambient and call it an album. (Man, Cubasis' UI was definitely lagging by the time I laid out all the pieces of this piece.

    https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/63778/jwm-spending-time-at-the-coffee-shop-longform-ambient-done-in-cubasis-3#latest

    Which I've linked to here as it is definitely over 10 minutes long.) 😂

    Hopefully I can create some pieces that are far longer than what I've been doing, but for that I need to grok how to use modular systems such as miRack and Wotja. I think it's pretty simple to figure out though now that I'm getting used to working with semi-generative stuff (mostly Harmony Bloom and Ioniarics, "semi-modular" synths (using the term loosely), and such). I just need to go from beginner to god-tier in miRack, and then I can create installations!

  • Just doing a little catching up. Been working on an AI project

    @DavidEnglish

    Equilibrium and The Island : Your music videos are always so good. These are no exception . Very enjoyable.

    @jwmmakerofmusic ,

    NYD2025 feels almost futuristic, great listening experience.

    @peanut_gallery
    Definitely enjoyed Interstellar Hibernation. Very tranquil. Lovely.

    @rottencat

    Gesture: Haunting in the best possible way. I love the vocalizing.
    Frieze : this is more in line with what I originally thought of as “ambient”. Constant but unpredictable indeed.
    Lossless : This feels more introspective. A bit of melancholy without being overly dramatic and dark.
    Current : Great sounds. Lovely video.

    @tubespace

    Core Wounds : Love the warbling effects mixed with the fantastic sounds. Excellent production. The way this sounds surround the audience is awesome.

    @bygjohn

    Another Beginning : Aptly titled. Feels like the perfect piece for a fresh start. It was the perfect accompaniment for my walk through the freshly fallen snow today.
    Zeussthera : Strange and alien, dark and mysterious. I like it.

    Sorry if I’ve overlooked anyone I hadn’t already commented on.

    This continues to be a great experience. Thanks again for coming up with this challenge @jwmmakerofmusic

    I'm so happy you enjoyed my and others' fantastic music. ❤️

    I love coming up with these challenges, not just for the selfish reason of listening to new great music, but also to bring our community together.

    Next month, I'm not sure what challenge I'll do yet. May involve making Ambient in either GR-16, GR-II (should be released by then), or use Pure Acid. Or to just use an app not traditionally geared for Ambient to make Ambient. Or maybe a "TikTokify Your Music" challenge to make a piece of music (any genre) between 1-2 minutes long. Or maybe "use a non-Western scale" to create a piece of music (whether sticking to a non-Western grouping of notes, or using a plugin which can load a Scala file, etc). Or a "make a soundscape without a tonal center" challenge. I just need to decide a good challenge for February.

    Ultimate Ambient Discomania
    This composition fulfills two ambitions of mine as well as meeting the “ambient” requirement of the challenge.
    The first is something I’ve wanted to do since the early eighties; create the ultimate disco album. It was to consist of 45 minutes of four on the floor kick drum. Here are the first ten.
    My second ambition was to get away with releasing a track that I would not have to actually listen to . I have not listened to more than a minute of this nor do I intend to. I encourage listeners to follow my lead in this regard, although you are certainly welcome to ignore this advice at your own peril.
    As for fitting squarely within the “ambient” genre, what could be more ambient than 10 minutes of a fan?
    Maybe someone will enjoy my first post of ambient music. Not likely.
    :p :)

    LOL! 😂 I enjoyed skimming through this piece to see how it evolved, and I'm laughing my ass off. I assume this was a bit more of a lighthearted joke piece, and I'm glad you posted it.

  • edited January 11

    “see how it evolved”
    It’s supposed to evolve? Oh shit! In that case think John Cage.. the evolution is within the listeners mind as he/she continues to grow more and more bored, or angry, or suicidal or whatever. Yeah.. I’ll go with that. :#

    “I assume this was a bit more of a lighthearted joke piece”. A bit? Dude, I simply cannot create ambient music and there is not a gram of seriousness to this. To those here that can do it, which compared to me is everybody, hats off.

    “I'm glad you posted it.” Your welcome!

    Can't fool me - it was obvious this guy:

    was the only musician in the group actually contributing to this piece. Those guitarists are posers.

  • I don’t know how ambient this is., maybe more ambient techno. It’s definitely influenced by the orb and obviously the Shamen. But it is definitely over 10 minutes.

    I found this hard. It’s not really what I do. But the hardest thing was that I ended up running out of memory with track clocking in at 5GB. CPU was a slither and it just got so hard to mix.

    What’s annoying is that I think there’s a good track in here. But the limitations of my iPad, which I don’t normally experience, were exposed by a long evolving track with a lot of parts & fx. So I’ve sent it to the cloud to work on when I upgrade.

    For now though, here is some Whambient!

  • This is what I shat out for Jamuary, I think it qualifies:

    This is so well done though! Even though it has prominent drums in it in one of the sections, it does have elements of Ambient in it. It's so nice to listen to regardless. :) And I love the Shamen. Ebeneezer Goode was one of my favourites from back in the day (used to have the single on CD!).

    And this. This is really calming and soothing. Really love how it flowed. Was that a sax I heard in the mix? Or was it a synth I mistook for a sax?

  • @jwmmakerofmusic cheers dude. I’m just a little frustrated because its very close to sounding how it should & I know how to but my iPad is literally crying at me to stop 🤣
    I might post a version without the drums. It’s just the track kind of decided it went that way. Sounds weird but I know what I mean.

    I’m a big shamen fan. They never get the credit they deserve. En-tact (and in Gorbachev we trust before it…) predates many ‘pioneers.’ They also gave Terrence McKenna a top 40 single with re:evolution. So if I’m using his voice then it’s kinda wrong not to mention them.

    I’ve just aquired a copy of progeny (3x12’’ move any mountain) it’s got 20 stems on it so I think I might sample that for something.

  • OK, I worked on something in StaffPad and have spent too much time on it trying to find non-orchestral instruction work with it. I think I’ll just mix it as a string quartet and 2 flutes and post it (probably in a day or two).

    Maybe I’ll remix it later if I get inspired to create what I originally had in mind.

  • A chopped up piano sample played semi-randomly in Koala and Decent Sampler playing the Dusty Rings Keys instrument and sounding for all the world like women’s voices.

  • @michael_m Looking forward to hearing the results, my friend. :)

    @rottencat <3 I'm so happy you've entered many times in this challenge. Your music is just so soothing and perfect. :) Thank you Yvonne.

  • Not entirely sure I’m happy with the results, but here it is:

    I tried to rework it without the orchestral instruments, but couldn’t get it to sound right.

    The mixing isn’t great now that I listen back, but I think I’m just going to leave this version as-is now.

    The mix sounds good as-is to me. Not sure what more you could do with the mix. The piece itself is very sublime. <3 I really love what you did here mate. :)

  • I have been trying to listen through all of them, but each one is so long that it took quite a bit of time, especially as I wanted to listen to some more than once.

    What really strikes me is how each person has a different approach to ‘ambient’, and how varied in general the pieces are.

    All good stuff so far, and still some of the month to go!

  • Ok so I've lurked around here for a while and never posted anything. I'm trying to get into the whole iPhone/iPad music making thing coming from Ableton and this seemed like a fun challenge to start with. Thanks @jwmmakerofmusic for putting this out there. While I struggle through making my own track, I've listened to the ones posted on the thread so far. Here are my thoughts in no particular order (apologies if I've missed anyone):

    @MadeofWax - Adrift: Robot factory meets distant space radio transmissions, definite space vibes, ghost in the machine comes to mind

    @McD - Weightless Ensemble: If a wind chime and a synth got sucked into a black hole, I think it would sound a bit like this

    @jwmmakerofmusic - NYD 2025: Good overall progression, like the texture/rhythm added by the hats, nice plucks and evolving pads, reminds me of Starfield

    @DavidEnglish - The Island: I enjoyed the more organic sounding instruments, lovely visuals, very peaceful and relaxing

    @peanut_gallery - Interstellar Hibernation: Very peaceful and lush, perfect for background music, the title fits the song perfectly

    @Fruitbat1919 - Searching: I liked the virtual instrument approach, nice melodies, this almost feels like a jam band wrote an ambient song and I like

    @tubespace - Core Wounds: Really nice textures and movement to the sounds, the vocal samples really added a nice variety to the song

    @bygjohn - Another Beginning: Very peaceful and meditative, I like how generative and unpredictable it is

    @bygjohn - Zeussthera: Reminds me of space monks meditating on the top of a space mountain, in the best way

    @Nighur - Pausing Pauses: I like the used of guitar plucks (if that's what it is), the pulses of sounds add a nice rhythm, I was not expecting the horns or the spoken bits, all in all very nicely done

    @boomer - Ultimate Ambient Discomania: More rhythm than most ambient, if you turn it down enough it sounds like sleeping in a room with a really noisy fan

    @michael_m - The Fading Light of Day: Really pleasant orchestral sounds, very move soundtrack-ish

    @rottencat - Gesture: Love the haunting vocal-like sounds, good overall progression that didn't get too repetitive

    @rottencat - Soma: Soft, sleepy, and peaceful with just enough evolution to keep it interesting, this one reminds for of a forest fairy melody for some reason

    @rottencat - Current: Calm and peaceful, reminds me of RPG menu music in the best way (my personal favorite of your submissions)

    @rottencat - For M: Nice sound design, the tape saturated sound of the samples is very nice, this one reminds me of Jogging House

    @rottencat - Lossless: Like the randomness, simultaneously soothing and a bit haunting, the kalimba or pluck sounds is very nice

    I agree with @michael_m, It's really cool to hear the variety of everything that was submitted so far. I don't feel like anyone's submissions sounded all that close to anyone else's, which is pretty cool.

  • Thank you @as_in_the_skies . :) Also, welcome to the forum.

  • So, @jwmmakerofmusic, having accepted your challenge, I tried to fit in Dynabit somewhere. Every time I tried it felt like I was shoehorning in something that didn’t fit.

    Rofl at the image. 😂 As the creator of the challenge, I too have the task of listening to every piece. ❤️ Since I'm currently obsessed with Ambient music, this was a sneaky way to get people to produce more for me to listen to. 🤭 Lol! Speaking of which...
