I’ve never gotten, used, or had much exposure to fabfilter apps. They look pretty intense - maybe slightly intimidating. Do these fit a particular niche in the iOS plugin market? They seem a bit more on the boutique side.

I think of them as being on the "prosumer" end of the iOS music app market. They're for people who want/need the kind of full-featured audio engineering tools you find on a desktop.

I only have a couple of them as I can't justify the expense. Saturn 2 is an absolute workhorse distortion/overdrive/saturation that can easily serve as the only app in that category for many people.

I can’t get past the UI- acres of wasted space, tiny controls.

Basically, well at least imo, fab filter, make some of the most powerful AU Apps on iOS. There are however also some downsides, the GUI on several could be improved, as you mentioned (some small/intricate buttons, unused spaces, etc.) they’re only available for iPad, and they can be a little heavy on CPU if using an older device and a patch with mad modulation. I don’t want to discourage anyone from getting any of them because FF makes great apps ( at least the 3 I have) and they sound great, but I could see them not being for everyone. Like all apps, it’s really up to personal preference, workflow, device, what you want to accomplish, etc…

They provide a lot of ways to get the exact sound you're looking for, but for my use they have too many options. I prefer Toneboosters instead and have the same plugins on both iPadOS and desktop.

  • Isn't twin the closest thing to serum that we have?

In general, I'd also go for Toneboosters over FabFilter, as the UIs work better without a pencil and they're cheaper. But the FabFilter bundle is really good value compared to the full desktop prices and I think I remember that Toneboosters stuff never goes on sale. But don't get any of these apps just for the sake of it. The whole point of sales is to convince you to buy stuff you don't really need and may not even really want. Bundles are especially a risk in that regard. I bought so many bundles because they were cheap, and then never ended up using them much. That's no longer cheap then. And if you're only making music for your own pleasure and are more interested in the creative side of things, you might never be motivated to bother learning to use plugins that are more mixing-and-mastering focused. Or, by the time you do learn to use them, they may have been superseded by v2s or v3s, or by different apps altogether.

  • Lord, lots of good sales.

Anyone looking at AuroraDSP I’d recommend
    Goblyn
    Rotten pool verb
    Gorilla
    Goblyn
    Banshee
    Goblyn

Did I mention Goblyn? I’m kind of obsessed with that one.

The Battalion release is a pretty big deal right? I feel like I’ve seen a lot of hype around that on desktop. I need a good drum machine, and I’ve been eyeing OneShot and Patterning 3.

I need to check out the Shattered Glass Audio fx - I’ve been hunting down good compressors. Between them and Aurora DSP I’ve got a few good options to research today.

Hoping the sales are still going tomorrow.

@Gavinski I appreciate the thoughtful response. I think I’m at the healthy point of being past the binge buy phase and now figuring out what I’m still lacking. Getting a lot better at doing my research and listening to suggestions (like yours).
