Song Of The Month Club - January 2025
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
When the words were spoken
Before we reached the end
When we saw the broken
World we could not mend
A thousand memories
Float high over the trees
They whisper softly
As they fly above me
They pass over our heads
And drift on their way
As we sleep in our beds
And dream them away
When you were beside me
When I was your friend
The time that was denied me
Was never yours to spend
A thousand memories
Float high over the trees
They whisper softly
As they fly above me
They pass over our heads
And drift on their way
As we sleep in our beds
And dream them away
As a side note, SOTMC started up in February 2015, so next month is the ten-year anniversary 🎂
As per usual the chorus is great — your knack for writing catchy melodies is a real talent.
I like the synths in the intro, which blend seamlessly into indie guitar. Production is very strong and the guitar tones are great, as usual.
Another really good song. I don’t know how you do it every month!
Thanks! The vocal melody is always my primary focus and the stage I spend the longest on. There's always around 20-30 discarded melody ideas for each song, I try to come up with as many melodies as I can and choose the best ones.
Even then, not every song ends up being a keeper, but this system works for me. I always discard way more stuff than I keep.
In my opinion this is your most accomplished vocal track I've heard. You have managed to blend the ambience of the vocal with the synth sounds to a degree that makes them feel like they are both living and breathing as one. Would love to have seen how you put this together.
I also took more notice of the lyrics of this one. Simple but highly effective. I will listen to this one again for sure.
Thanks! Singing has been a long road for me so it's always nice to hear if people like a vocal.
Here's my entry:
It was a collaboration with the super-talented @JanKun. We posted about this collaboration here where you'll also find JanKun's version of this song. I hope the cross-post isn't too annoying ;-)
Great intro into track that entertains and feels weighty. The only thing I’m not sure about is the mix. By this, I mean some of the sounds are blending into others a little too much for me. I’m not sure if it’s the levels or similar spectrum of the tones. It might even be a deliberate choice on your part, as I’ve seen this quite a bit in tracks of late and maybe why mine clash at times as I prefer more striking differences in tones except for layering sections, I just tend to go too far in the opposite direction.
Sorry for going on, I’m not saying my thoughts well here, but you probably get what I’m saying and you probably disagree totally which is just the way it should be! All in all a wonderful track.
This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Solo for the flute, English horn, and cello; Noire for the piano; Jaeger for the singing voice; and Omnisphere for the other instruments.
After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.
It's titled Time Enough.
Cross post is unforgivable! What are you trying to do? Flood the creation section? I am so disappointed and pissed off. Need myself some good ol' ambient to relax and cool down. Any idea where I could find some?
Btw, great track, but I can say in pure objectivity that the other guy's version is better 😉
Lol.
My answer to cross post nags is to read their comical moans then move on to more important things such as counting chocolate or going for a poo....

Among the maxims on Lord Naoshige's wall there was this one: "Matters of great concern should be treated lightly." Master lttei commented, "Matters of small concern should be treated seriously." Among one's affairs there should not be more than two or three matters of what one could call great concern. If these are deliberated upon during ordinary times, they can be understood. Thinking about things previously and then handling them lightly when the time comes is what this is all about.

In the present context, An interpretation could be that 🍫 and 💩 shall be deliberated upon ahead to be fully understood and easily handled 🤔
PS: I haven't the slightest idea of what I am talking about
Yeah but when you make great tracks as you two did, then who cares if one talks shite every now and again? You wait till I write a great track.....the shit talking will be beyond belief!!!
And apologies that I'm so off topic this month.....I promise to behave on the tenth anniversary!
Don't worry ! Me talk shite all the time ! If you have the time, Listen to my tracks backwards, it is a feast of subliminal scatology.
I've convinced myself that like Zappa, I have conceptual continuity clues in all my tracks....but to be perfectly honest the the only common denominator is my rather mediocre music skills in each track....well that and me having quite a lot of fun trying!
The original Zappa on the Crappa prints go for quite a tidy sum now!
Thanks for listening :-)
I don't know which sounds you think blend in too much, but I did actually set out to have some sounds do exactly that. I wanted them to almost morph from one to another. In the outro, I wanted a wall of sound almost, so the sound needed to be everything all at once.
It's all cool. I think of things a bit like an orchestra. For some tunes I want something like a string quartet where every note is audible and has its place in the frequency and panorama stage. Other times I want a 100 piece symphonic orchestra where all the sounds can blend into one big huge epic whole. And everything in between.
I don't have rules for this kind of stuff, I do what feels right for the song at that time.
Hopefully the mix sounds OK other than that? It's hard to mix stuff like this with headphones. The mix doesn't always translate to different systems. There are parts of the frequency range I just don't hear! lol
I've done some mixes which sound great on shitty speaker but awful on big Hi-Fi setups and vice versa. Mixing is hard.
I wish I had the space (and funds!) for a proper studio with treated acoustics and nice big monitors. And younger ears that weren't missing half the frequency spectrum. But I make do with what I've got and mix on headphones and try and compare to reference mixes and listen back in the car and on other speakers when I get a chance.
Having said all that, this song is unlikely to get 100 listens. I'm not popular and don't have the skills to make myself more popular than I am... So in the grand scheme of things, if it sounds good to my ears it'll do.
Please don't get me banned.
What's 'ambient'? Never heard of it.
Nah, my version is much better, especially the vocal and guitar performances :-)
Thank you. I had this on in the background while I had a head pain this morning. Very soothing on the soul.
Agree with everything you've said. Yes, the mix is just great it's only my thoughts as I listened and they are only my opinion at that moment on what I listened on. I've chatted with many on here regarding getting mixes to sound great on all listening devices and it's just mind boggling science to me lol. Don't worry about your mixes too much especially when an old man like myself listens with my cloth ears lol.
I have liked pretty much all I've listened of your tracks and think you make wonderful music, but if it's more listens you want, I don't know much about that side of things. I know I would consider the music I make as probably less commercial viable than yours and I get very few listens for the most part. It's great to try whatever you want at the time and I for one love people's comments so that I can sometimes get new ideas from a person's perspective that differs to mine - but always do what you want and especially don't worry that your listens tallies are low at times!
I'm not worried about more listens. I make music because I like making music. It's obviously great when somebody likes your music, but it's not something I want to do anything about! I could spend more time promoting myself, and doing the things you need to do to get noticed, but I have no interest in doing that. I'd rather spend the time making more music...
Ultimately I try to make music I'd like to listen to. Any additional listens are just a bonus. If I was in it for the fame I'd have given up a long time ago!
Great way of thinking about it imo. Music making is just so fun and I think of myself as so lucky to be able to have this hobby. Yes my own fame and or infamy is only a funny dream and or nightmare I have in the wee hours of the night and usually only after a bout of pain lol
Just to add: I will be posting mine in a week or so and the ironic thing is I have some deliberately blending sounds too Mine suffers from no deliberate plan when writing though, as it was mostly written at night while I couldn’t sleep and I’ve pretty much not been able to write any real coherent tracks for the last week or so!
I really enjoy what the track became compared to the early version I previously heard. I especially like the delayed guitar. There's a great modulation (almost wobbly) that gives it a sense of nostalgia. Great singing. I also like a lot the lyrics on your latest 2 -3 songs. Simple but deep, evocative and very touching. You seem to produce a bit less lately but to great results.
Thanks! I have slowed down lately, I was producing 2-3 tracks a month most of last year, but now I'm having to be careful not to repeat myself with the same ideas over and over again, so the songs are taking longer to come together. I don't want my sound to become a boring formula so it's taking a little thought and exploration to try and move things sideways.
This a great song. The riff is awesome and is the backbone of the track, and all the other elements weave beautifully around it. I love the contrast between the slightly loose rhythm guitars and the tight drums, and all the sound design choices that make the track so vibey and full of energy.
Since @klownshed shared his version this month, probably better for me to share my version too.
NB: to those who already commented on the original thread and are already tired of the song, please don't feel obliged to comment here !
Lyrics in the spoiler
CUT OUT
A Feeling
Out of fashion
Out of focus
Out of mind
Running
Out of patience
Out of luck
Out of time
Rushing
Out of breath
Out of bounds
And out of sight
Crashing
Out of order
Out of water
Out of light
Kicking habits
Is just another way to die
Kicking habits
Is just another lie
This time
Cut me out
Of the pain
Cut me loose
Cut the crap
Now give me something
That I really want this time
Cut the losses
Cut the fat
Cut the air with a knife
Now give me something
That I truly need this time
Cut the ties
Cut the deal
Cut supplies
Cut transmission
Now give me something
I could really own this time
Cut the red tape
Cut the slack
Cut the chatter
Cut the track
Now give me something
I could really love this time
Now give me something
I could really use this time
Now give me something
That I really need tonight
The simplicity of the harmony and melody make for a hypnotic piece, it feels a bit more static than some of your other works but drifts by most pleasantly.
Can't go wrong with a nice cello sound. The flute adds a nice melody, over a very slow accompaniment. My only thought is that a lot of the instrumentation is on the same beat, every note changes at the same time in places, a counter melody that doesn't follow the same rhythm might add a bit of variation as its such a long piece (relatively speaking), although that's probably exactly what you're going for!
