My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    When the words were spoken
    Before we reached the end
    When we saw the broken
    World we could not mend

    A thousand memories
    Float high over the trees
    They whisper softly
    As they fly above me

    They pass over our heads
    And drift on their way
As we sleep in our beds
    And dream them away

    When you were beside me
    When I was your friend
The time that was denied me
    Was never yours to spend

    A thousand memories
    Float high over the trees
    They whisper softly
    As they fly above me

    They pass over our heads
    And drift on their way
As we sleep in our beds
    And dream them away

This is stunning @richardyot!. Vocals are great, agree with @Fruitbat1919 tyays it’s one of your best vocals. On some of your songs I mentioned how they felt too loud or forward for my taste, here they blend beautifully.
I specially love the guitar melody, such a beautiful performance and sound. What are you using for that lovely chorusy delay sound?.
Also the drums sound super realistic.
The song has an Echo Bunnymen kind of vibe, beautiful but tense… Congrats. You nailed it 👏

    Thanks :)

The effect on the lead guitar is Baby Audio Super VHS with the Drift parameter at 12 o'clock, that's what gives the wobbly vibrato effect (I abuse this plugin quite often).

My vocals are generally a little less upfront now than they used to be a year or two ago, I use sidechain ducking to push the guitars down when the voice comes in, and that allows me to lower the vocal without losing too much clarity. I've also learned to EQ the voice a little better (the XVox plugin makes this a lot easier).

  • As per the title, this is self indulgent noodling with iPad synths instead of a guitar. Don’t worry if you give up before you get to the end. I’m not sure if it has much value as a piece to listen to, I just got addicted to adding more and more parts. As I’ve had brain freeze most of Christmas and the new year, I just kept noodling, so I’m posting some noodling this month. Hopefully I will have some inspiration before the 10th anniversary next month!

There are some really good bits in this, some good sound choices/sound design and the logic drummer is banging out some cool beats. It is way too long though, but with all your talk of self-indulgence I think you know that. ;) There's a really good 4 minute piece in there. You just need to be ruthless with the arrangement. Some parts, such as the bit that starts around the 11 minute mark (!!) should be culled and maybe saved for another project.

The best way I know of to avoid going too far with the self-indulgence if you intend it to be listed to by others, is to play your track to somebody else in real life. If you find yourself feeling self-conscious as you're watching the listener and anticipating them getting bored by the upcoming 5 minute bass solo, then all of a sudden it's easy to cut a chunk out of the track and adjust the arrangement accordingly. I literally feel it when the track is losing focus and getting meanders when I watch somebody listen to it when I hadn't noticed when making it.

Having said that, we are all self-indulgent by definition; We're not signed artists releasing music as a commodity to earn a living, we're making it for ourselves! Don't let self-indulgence worry you -- it's literally what we do. Surely the primary goal any of us here should really have is enjoying making our music. We really only do need to satisfy ourselves with what we make. It's nice to get a thumbs up and a couple of listens, but there's nothing quite like the feeling of satisfaction of finishing a track for me :)

Ultimately, if you want to release a 16+ minute epic, do it. You don't need internet nobodies like me influencing what you make. But I would still try and make a 'radio' mix of this track, there'e more than enough in there to make a cracking tune :-)

Yep agree with everything you said. I probably won’t chop the bits and continue anything yet, as I’ve already moved on to something new. I’m going to store it on a memory card for later possible dabbling. I have to do this as only having a 256gb iPad, I have to shift my projects off to free up space. The problem with this is that I can easily forget about them. At least posting YouTube vids reminds me of them at times.

I did read a great article once on what you need to do to keep a listeners interest, but I found that by using its advice, my tracks just weren’t what I wanted to listen to anymore, so like you said I’m not trying to earn a living, just have fun and maybe get someone to listen to my music to help their own - I know I get get help listening to other people’s music on here - at times, even one particular sound can just get me scurrying off to AUM to start something.

Thanks for listening and for sharing your opinions with me :)

    Lyrics in the spoiler

    CUT OUT

    A Feeling
    Out of fashion
    Out of focus
    Out of mind
    Running
    Out of patience
    Out of luck
    Out of time
    Rushing
    Out of breath
    Out of bounds
    And out of sight
    Crashing
    Out of order
    Out of water
    Out of light

    Kicking habits
Is just another way to die
    Kicking habits
    Is just another lie

    This time
    Cut me out
    Of the pain
    Cut me loose
    Cut the crap
    Now give me something
That I really want this time
    Cut the losses
    Cut the fat
Cut the air with a knife
    Now give me something
That I truly need this time
    Cut the ties
    Cut the deal
    Cut supplies
    Cut transmission
    Now give me something
I could really own this time
    Cut the red tape
    Cut the slack
    Cut the chatter
    Cut the track
    Now give me something
I could really love this time
    Now give me something
I could really use this time
    Now give me something
    That I really need tonight

This mix is a bit more swampy sounding than Klownshed's which suits the song better, but there are some abrupt transitions in the levels which are a bit disturbing to me - these happen when the vocals come in and when they stop.

The breaks are really cool though (and the abrupt transitions there are not a problem, they enhance the track).

Obviously I've already said what a great track this is, but it's worth repeating.

One change I would make if I was in the producer's chair would be to re-introduce the riff (or a variation on it) in the final section. The riff is killer and it doesn't get tiring, it's worth using it as a hook as much as possible.

There are lots of great ideas in here, but it's way too long :D

Watching this unfold it actually reminds me in some way of my workflow: I like to noodle and come up with lots of ideas. But then I edit ruthlessly and just keep the ideas I like best. There's nothing wrong with jamming, it's the foundation of writing IMO, but editing is also important if you want to engage the listener.

There's obviously a discussion to be had about personal art vs art that is meant for an audience, but I see no reason why with just a bit more work this piece couldn't be edited down to something that would be a lot easier for listeners to engage with - it's really just a case of making a few choices and cutting it down to something shorter.

Like I say, this is full of great ideas and interesting musical moments, nothing wrong with it at all, it's just a bit long to actively engage with.

I think the issue here is that there is more than one way to skin a cat. An ABBA song is structured very differently from a Pink Floyd song - ABBA have very tight arrangements with stuff constantly going on, whereas Pink Floyd have sections of nothing but wind noise and long intros that build up slowly to a track - both approaches are valid but obviously diametrically opposed to each other.

You can make engaging arrangements either way, because even Pink Floyd tracks are tightly arranged: the build-ups serve a purpose and the tension they create is exciting once the track starts in earnest. Arranging is an art in itself IMO, and it's worth just as much consideration as the chords, rhythms, and melodies. Arrangements are what make tracks dynamic and exciting.

O I do agree. I was in two minds if to post anything at all this month as I've pretty much only had lots of noodling and nothing approaching a well structured idea or plan. I'm not surprised as this time of year is often more chaotic for me and I usually struggle to structure my time well. Not excuses, just the way my life is and if nothing else, my music tends to mirror how I'm feeling pretty well - the good and the bad lol.

I do enjoy sharing stuff though, as I believe it only takes a moment of sound to help people with their own musical chaos. I am happy that I end up with chaos instead of total musical blocks though as I used to get before I decided to post on here. All this said, I am in total agreement with what you guys are saying!

Me too as ’Cut Out’ is far more JanKun‘s song than it is mine as he wrote the actual song part of it! But then I figured why not take all the credit myself?

    Lol you're funny B)

  • @richardyot
Cool opening builds up anticipation for what might follow. Tinkling instruments near the opening work to reinforce the idea of a thousand memories. Love the delicate instrumental section in the middle of the song. Epic, yet restrained.

    @klownshed
Hard driving and energetic. Vocals that cut through the wall of sound. Really like the quiet interlude that works as a contrast to the earlier sections. Spreads out at the end like a favorite fraying blanket. Grand and forceful.

    @JanKun
A softer (though still edgy) and more reflective version. Dreamlike and subliminal in places. Greater emphasis on the excellent lyrics, as there’s additional space for the words to breathe and sing out. This mix is less in your face and more nestled into the back of your mind. I’m not going to pick a favorite version, as they’re remarkably diverse in tone and intent -- differently purposed for different moods.

    @Fruitbat1919
Bubbly, exotic, and exploratory. Has a nice cumulative benefit as it travels back and forth across instruments and genres. It’s relaxing, but with a dose of being unsettled. Interesting to visually see the mix as it plays out. The noodling is strong with this one.
