Tiki Play - Another 1950s/60’s exotica style music
Off work today so I had time to play and record something on the iPad.
This is a second attempt of making an exotica style song popular in the 1950’s/60’s. The first one I made is here:https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/63070/tahiti-time-revisited-60-s-style-exotica-music. The format of this song is very close to the first one, even the bridge is similar, but the feeling of this song is different, more of a children’s melody.
This was made in AUM using multiple instances of MidiTapeRecorder to record the midi tracks. The main drum track is from SessionBand Ukulele. Other percussion is from beathawk. The sound presets are from Sunrizer @Spidericemidas presets and also from Korg iM1 Ethnic1 card. The bass is from sampletank. The main melody is from the oddtunes:Hang app. Piano is from pianoteq. Marimba is from a free soundfont.
There not much really to this song other than it was more of an exercise for me finding sounds that can work together for this kind of genre for when making a more serious song. Was a fun diversion from the regular music I have to play on gigs.

Very cool track, puts me immediately in those 50ths/60ths tunes.😉👏👏👏
Very well played Sir.
Lovely stuff, nostalgia for a time I couldn’t possibly remember 😅
@Dav Yes, another excellent track.
Thanks for listening @TracerY, @Krupa & @thesoundtestroom. I should have put in some lush strings and voices, maybe will move this into a full DAW for adding more midi tracks. I do love the simplicity of using MidiTapeRecorder in AUM tho.
I had to record the oddtunes:hang drum instrument last while the AUM project played for the final recording. I guess there’s no trick to make played notes go into a MIDI recorder? It loads as an IAA instrument but has no keyboard connections. I liked the sound of the hang drum over the steel drum sounds I found.
You should put your original creations up on SoundCloud or BandCamp.
I appreciate your ability to play on the backside of the beat which helps enforce the tropical vacation spot vibe of tiki lounge.
So many instruments at play here.
I think maybe some of that is unintentional. I found myself rushing at first playing at that slow tempo, so I really had to put on the brakes while playing, especially on the piano. After awhile it got more comfortable.
Thanks for listening!
This is really nice. Me and honey bunny went on a Caribbean cruise many years ago. The house band was playing something like this. We were slow dancing under the moonlight.
This piece is so soothing and so well done and lovely. I really enjoyed it.
As @McD said, you should upload to Bandcamp or Soundcloud (or both). It's beautiful mate.
Thanks @Paulieworld and @jwmmakerofmusic! Paulieworld, that sounds nice. I came close to taking cruise ship gig once, but let a good friend talk me out of it. Kind of regret that choice sometimes. JMW - I’m leaning toward soundcloud.
My first year of SoundCloud, I just took the free space and deleted the older projects when I ran out of space.
With all the work linked on this forum I finally decided to pay for storage and now have 825 tracks and 2,291 minutes
uploaded and playable.
I did try uploading a modified project that added strings to a vocal track I like but soundcloud detected the copyright violation
and refused the upload. So, for work based on covers it’s probably NOT a good choice.
BandCamp is better to monetize original work but I suspect you might be lucky to get more than $100 over the course of a year.
There are a couple artists I tend to buy from to support their work ethic and attention to quality work.
Actually, your friend was pretty much correct. Living conditions on a cruise ship for employees and performers are less than ideal, usually having to bunk with someone else. In other words, ya don't get to sleep in one of the nice cabins. And goodness forbid if you are stuck bunking with someone who needs the TV on to fall asleep. 😂
Good choice by the way. Bandcamp is an excellent website, don't get me wrong. However, it can be disheartening when you set a price for a track and/or an album, and nobody buys it. SoundCloud's sub also includes being able to get your music out in front of more people (so long as your track is above a minute and under 10 minutes, so my longform pieces of Ambient aren't eligible for that). There are ways to monetise your music on SoundCloud, but honestly I don't bother. I just like creating music and putting it out for people to hear.
Lovely recreation of a bygone age… just shows the amazing variety of music on the forum 👌
Another awesome @Dav original. Love it.
Thank you for listening @GeoTony @Neum! The amount of instruments at our fingertips on the iPad is astounding. Can’t think of anything we’re missing.
That’s 2 of these kind of songs down, gonna try and make enough for an album one day - maybe by 2037 the way it’s going.
Haha. After you make it you should sell it on the iTunes Store.
