How is this different to Chordjam?

VERY minimal differences to Chordjam currently. Here's some that i noticed:

    • has a 6th note (bass)
    • No sequencer
    • Can play the chord pads with a midi keyboard
    • Has a knob to dial in equal strums easily

Since Mario was one of the developers of Chordjam my guess is that this is going to be Chordjam 2 essentially. Or Audiomodern is going on a different direction with Chordjam and he wanted to keep it alive and Push it in his own direction.

In any case, currently, it's almost identical functionality.

The main difference I can see is the repeater function which can, particularly when used in conjunction with the strum functionality, create some interesting melodic movement within the chords.

Thanks. I’m not sure why I would buy this one as well in that case. One to watch for me.

I’m not yet sure how closely the Repeater function in Chord Generator can be replicated in Chordjam.

This looks great, I notice it says it’s Mac compatible, which seems a bit odd since there’s a separate Mac version.

I notice the same thing with Harmony Bloom - I have the ipad version, but when I go to download it on the Mac it asks for payment. Is this the usual app store glitch do you think?

If you already bought the app, when you go to download the iPad version through the Mac store, it’ll look like it’s taking payment, until the end and it lets you download it. It’s a long standing glitch on the Mac App Store.

Just double check you’ve bought the iPad version, on the same Apple account, and that it’s the same version. Some devs do have Separate apps with the same name so that can be confusing. FWIW same thing with Harmony Bloom and I was able to download it for free even thought is said purchase.

Have you actually done this thought the, as the app is also available separately for desktop?

For harmony bloom, yes. I only purchased once.

This chord app says made for iPad on the Mac App Store and those aren’t separate purchases. I believe they sell a desktop version on their site as well? I’m 99% about this process, would be 100 if the questions didn’t make me question it 😅

Oh damn! I bought Harmony Bloom on iPad and on desktop separately (not through the App Store). If this one is a single purchase for both I’ll grab it but if not I think I’ll pass for now as I have ChordJam (although I like per note repeat option on this one).

Definitely looks like a good purchase if you don’t have ChordJam or if you’re looking for a small upgrade.

  • The separate harmony bloom on desktop provides vst and standard au plugins which are much more versatile in terms of being useful in most hosts/daws rather than the auv3 that the single purchase iPad version provides (useable in logic and dRambo, maybe some others, but not bitwig or Ableton for sure)

  • edited January 12

I brought it and love it!

One issue though: I can not set the range for the randomize options over the Velocity and Strum. (I.e. the bar over each of the collumns for this, which I should be able to drag, to make the range smaller.) Anyone else having this issue?

Fantastic! Thanks for clarifying. I’m a Logician on desktop so all good. I also buy any useful iOS plugin that can be installed on desktop for three easy of transferring projects with flexibility. Will definitely grab this now. Thanks again.

In general, I think you often need to make sure the setting is not "locked". So always check the applicable little padlock icon; I've found that it's always been the source of the problem when I thought something wasn't working right.

  • Another big difference between this and Chordjam, for me, is that I can actually see what I’m doing. The colour scheme editor is a great accessibility feature. I wish Audiomodern would start doing this with their apps, I find them pretty much unreadable currently.

Yeah, works in Logic, but doesn’t load or send MIDI in standalone to Ableton. Plus it crashed in standalone when I tried to export captured MIDI, so of limited use for me. Also makes the Chord Generator purchase slightly less attractive.

Yeah, this is why I never used it, the UI is really off-putting.

Thanks for the advice! I’m quite sure this is not the issue here, as the re-trigger does work as intended - giving new random values for my stum each time triggered. I am just not able to set the range of these random values, which should be possible by dragging the start- and endpoints of the bar directly above the Strum collumn. But this bar does not respond to dragging no matter what I do.

Sorry, yes, those should move even if lock is on. On my desktop version I get little arrows on each end to drag when I mouse over. I don't have the iPad version.

  • Bought and also managed to install on desktop. Just on the latter for anyone who is using it in Logic for desktop - how does one actually record midi from the pads?

  • Using Mass midi sequencer into Chord Generator then out to your choice of poly synth and or instrument creates some unique results.

Did you restart your computer? Also when you installed it was the App Store the only thing running? I would recommend doing these steps when installing audio apps on Mac.

    • Close all programs but App Store
    • Install the app you want
    • Open the app you want and enable any permissions it might need.
    • Quit App
    • Restart
    • Upon logging back in
    • Open any daw you want to use
    • Make sure it scans the plugins list again
    • Retry

It seems silly but this has helped me a ton with a variety of audio apps on Mac for years now.

    Thanks, yeah tried all that.

It won’t work in Ableton as it’s a MIDI generator, which Live doesn’t support. Some apps will send MIDI in standalone, which can be picked up by Live, however even though HB has an option to send MIDI, it’s not detecting Live, and Live isn’t picking it up either.

Works perfectly in Logic, so I can record and share MIDI clips that way, but it’s a bit more time consuming, so the new Chord app is slightly less appealing to me now.

Not a surprise as I guess it would impact on their desktop version sales.

Yes, same issue here. Very hard to move the range options on velocity and strum. Added problem with the strum is when I am able to move its range option it doesn’t seem to have any effect.

I am able to change the range for those (using the AUv3 inside AUM, but it's a little fiddly). As you say tho, changing it for strum doesn't actually have any effect. I've emailed the dev.

Just trying to get some clarification…are you opening the app in Ableton or trying to use it outside of Ableton as a standalone app? Ableton does support midi generating apps inside Ableton on their own midi tracks you just have to set the track your instrument is on, to receive the notes from that track and have input monitoring on. I can’t speak to using an app outside of Ableton though..I have no idea how that would work. I have both Harmony Bloom and Chord Generator (full VST versions not iOS versions) and as midi generators they work fine inside of Live.

Cheers, yeah both as standalone, and inside.

Live doesn’t support AU MIDI generators, so only the VST version works inside Live. Some apps send MIDI in standalone mode, but although HB supports this, HB isn’t connecting to Live, so this option isn’t available either.

It’s not a biggie, I wouldn’t expect the cheaper iOS version to work as well as the desktop one, though it is working in Logic.

  • This looks pretty nifty.
I would love to have MIDI channels per lane (or multiple outputs ala fugue machine etc)
I’ll see what the dev thinks of that idea?!

    This app is sick!
5 minutes with it I’ve already come up with a few lil riffs that are highly useable and let me create something i wouldn’t have came up with on my own.

This is just v1 and we all saw how much harmony bloom grew since v1, so im sure it’ll only get better. But im happy with it as it stands and i am making music with it. Thats all i care about at the end of the day!

Yes, those mutating chords are really well chosen in that bit I think, Overall the presets seem very well put together. I personally love the Repeater function, which also works super well with the mutate feature. It and the strum section are the main difference between this and Chordjam.
