dumb hammerhead question

How do I save a kit in Hammerhead? I can save a pattern but I want to be able to save this kit I made. Then I want to be able to swap kits while listening to the same pattern playing.
I know the answer is easy and obvious, sorry about that! I just can't see it.

Comments

  • Presets contain both the kit and the pattern. There isn’t a way to save just one or the other.

  • Thanks for the information. I need to search out another drum app. I have Koala but I really enjoy the sequencer in Hammerhead.

  • Patterning 3...and it has a large library of great kits

Thanks for the suggestion. I was all ready to buy that when it came out but after reading threads about it and stuff I felt like it might be complicated. I'll watch some videos.

  • You can sequence hammerhead from something else too. Octachron is my current favorite drum sequencer, and considerably simpler. But Patterning is excellent as well.

Octachron is a sequencer only it has no sounds. But point it at hammerhead and you would be able to switch between kits like you were after.

Patterning is an all in one solution with sequencing, song mode, kits, midi out, etc.

Digistix 2 comes to mind. But I'm waiting for the soon-to-be-released Battalion by Unfiltered Audio.

  • Octachron looks easy and fun. Thanks @wim
Woah, Battalion looks amazing. But maybe more than I need.
What about Klevgrand Oneshot? I could sequence Oneshot with Octachron. It's a pricey idea, though, I'd have to wait for a sale.

Yes, octachron can sequence oneshot. Oneshot isn’t quite as seemless for parameter automation as some other apps are, but sequencing drum hits is very easy.

One really nice feature of octachron is, when apps have fixed CCs for parameter automation, those are already set up in the preset for that app or hardware. Oneshot doesn’t have fixed CCs so you have to set up your own mappings. https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/comment/1380497/#Comment_1380497

  • That is good information in that thread. I think I'll start with the Octachron/ Hammerhead combination and see how it goes.

Octa+OneShot= Absolute best option for “traditional” drums on iOS.
Octa+Sintala= best “sample based” option that’s not OneShot
Octa+FAC+ Drumkit= Absolute best option for Synth” Drums
Octa+FractalBits= Absolute best for weird-ass synth drums

The sequencer Cycle is also pretty killer as a drum sequencer if you’re looking for something outside the box, generative-ish but not random.

Hammerhead is a good gateway drug, but it’s got too many annoyances (sample browsing is a royal pain in the ass).

I’ll add the absolutely ancient, horrible interface straight port from desktop app Attack is an absolute monster drum machine. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/attack-drums/id956450390 and a lot more. You could easily make a complete techno album just using it and nothing else.

Had not heard Battalion was coming to iOS. That will be very cool if true. Looks like a monster.

Definitely an awesome epic choice - IMHO the best drum AUV3 out there for acoustic , on desktop and on iOS

It does need something like Octachron but Octachron is pretty darn amazing as well

(Add auto fills and you have something like your own virtual drummer )

Battalion is coming to is very soon apparently it’s almost finished porting but no updates afaik

  • Btw; no dumb questions

I still have no idea how to get hammerhead to drive anything (like midi out)

  • You might want to wait for DM10. After release they are adding probability/ randomising & mutation. It’s coming out soon.

  • Only time OCTACHRON isn't running my drums is when I'm using Patterning 3,

And I'll usually use it to trigger foleys via Bilboa.

For those of you that don't have oneshot, Gladstone is a great AU- works beautifully in Octachron.

  • These are all great ideas, I appreciate it!
    @robosardine is DM10 the new DM1 (fingerlab)? DM1 looks nice but it doesn't look like it's AUv3. I'm guessing DM10 will be AUv3?
The UI of DM1 looks very well laid out. I like it. I think I'll wait to see what DM10 is like before I buy anything. Octachron+Oneshot is my other good option, I think.

    +1

But also DM10 is awesome ; I liked it a lot and the dev takes a lot of suggestions too

Yes all correct. DM10 is the new AUv3 version of DM1. It should be worth waiting for. There is a fairly recent thread here on the forum that f you look towards the end of it. https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/62781/dm1-the-drum-machine-all-154-kits-tested-still-great-in-2024/p3

That should be pretty easy to clear up if you want to start up a thread or PM to walk through it. I don't see Hammerhead as anything super special as an external drum sequencer though. It's great for working inside hammerhead though.

(Note: some things like pitch, decay, and start point don't output any midi)

  • Appreciated and I will probably take you up on that - thank you 🙏 sir

  • What about EG Pulse? How do people feel about that app?

It’s OK. Single layer per pad. Comes with some OK kits.
Between that and DigiStix 2, I’d take DigiStix 2.

Ok thanks, wim. I'll be patient and wait for DM10 and/or a Klevgrand sale and get what I think I'd really like.
