Has anyone dared to install IOS18.3?

There was some talk about broken core-midi in a beta version. Has it been fixed?

core midi & core audio appear to be OK both on iOS 18.3 and MacOS 15.3.

    Cool thanks 😊

  • no problems here

  • I am interested to know if there are any (older) apps that do not run on 18.x anymore.

  • Still on 17, why change? Honest question… AI generated emojis? (actually wouldn’t mind learning more about those out of curiosity. How are they sent? How does the receiver device display them?)

well, i believe my oldest app is Waldorf Attack (last updated 2015) – still working.

some apps, e.g. Mela 6, require iOS 18.

Agree. I will stay on 17 until there is an app that I want and that makes an upgrade worth it. Otherwise AI stuff and makeup don’t interest's me. In contrast a better, less crippled browser or a free choice of browser engine would be a reason to upgrade.

I hear ya! (sending this from my jailbroken iOS 14.2 iPhone whose web view is so old that 70% of mainstream websites can't even be opened anymore 😂)

  • Thor is the one synth app I always think about when deciding to update or not. So far, it still works amazingly well with 18.2.1

A bit envy on that one, I do have it on desktop though. Remarkable synth.

That is impressive, I mean in iOS years, thor is a mammoth. Also baffled about mela, for instance, what possible reason could it be for being 18 only? Seems like a bad choice unless there’s some pretty good reason

Re: Mela and iOS 18 .. maybe not a perfect answer to your question, but here’s a screenshot and link from another thread with the developer of Mela addressing an iOS 18 inquiry ..

Nikolozi explains his rationale in the Mela FAQ. Basically, he wants to avoid retrospective implementation of new Mela features that may use new iOS features, and avoid retrospective testing.

    Critical security updates.

There is, such as reduced trouble-shooting time caused by having to support a gazillion of iOS/iPadOS versions which all their various issues that have to be worked around one way or the other.

I get it that some are 'anti-update' for various reasons but I keep all my devices as up-to-date as possible using 'release' versions of OS:es. It's enough to do beta on apps but to combine that with betas for OS:es as well and it becomes a total mess...

Both iPadOS18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3 run without any issues as do all the apps I use on a daily basis :sunglasses:

  • I get it. Thanks guys

I know you already get it, but here's one other consideration. Once iOS 19 is released, you won't have the choice to go to 18 if you need to for some reason.

I haven't updated my iPad to 18 yet. I feel like there's no rush and there are still the odd issue with apps cropping up (though it sounds like 18.3 is getting there). But when 19 is on the horizon then I will update to 18 while I still can.

I keep my iPhone updated. I don't care about it for music production, and it's far higher risk for security issues. That gives me a potential test bed for the odd issue I think might be there.

Seeing your post encouraged me to open this one up again. Extraordinary synth, I still haven’t plumbed its depths in all this time…

Are you using it in a DAW? I’ve tried playing around a bit with my go-to DAW, still problem solving trying AB3. Are you having success with an approach?

  • I’ve just been bounced in to this by Apple as the latest updates to 17 weren’t being offered to my iPad…

Definitely one of the reasons I update my phone often, and I always update it before other devices.

One very useful iOS 18 change is that iCloud documents can be set to remain downloaded.

Had to look into this since I was not aware of this new feature.

True! That's worth the update ... when the bug cycle is done, which I'm pretty sure is now, but I'll wait a few months more anyway.

  • I installed it on an older iPad, but my private mail server still does not work!
Staying at iPadOS 17 on all other devices until this works again.

[edit] see further post below ...

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but ...

I don't believe that's going to happen. I doubt it's a bug, and I doubt it will be "fixed". If your mail server doesn't work with iOS 18, it's most likely a configuration (certificate?) issue that needs to be addressed at your server. Most likely your server configuration no longer complies with some enhanced security criteria added with iOS 18.

Apple isn't going to back off from their security standards because of privately run servers that don't meet the criterial they determine is needed for secure communications. If you want to be able to move on with updates, you're going to need to figure out what to do on your server side.

Agreed on that, as it doesn’t sound like something broken.

A quick summary here of how you set it up might allow someone to help troubleshoot or suggest configuration changes.

After checking further, maybe I assumed wrongly. I see several posts out there that downloading on iMap servers is broken for some even though they can demonstrate that authentication is happening. Without details as to whether authentication and sending email is working I can't opine whether its a server side or client side issue.

On the other hand, I use iMAP with iOS 18 and am having no problems. I would also expect this to be a lot more widely discussed if it is a general problem.

I did the same and see a number of potential solutions suggested, but it’s hard to tell how widespread it is, particularly as it doesn’t appear to be an issue that people trying to troubleshoot it can recreate. There are also people saying that it started with various different iOS 18 versions.

I’ve had success using it with Loopy Pro, along with a few other IAA synths like Shoom for example.

It also still works great with AUM.
