Drum machine suggestions
Hi! I'm looking for a drum machine with the following features :
- drum synth that can randomize each sound individually
- integrated sequencer in AUv3
- pattern bank
- random pattern generator
- fills generator
If it doesn't exist, what would be good combos to achieve this?
Thanks in advance!!

Octochron (drum sequencer only) Hands down
I was eyeing it for some time. With what drum app do you pair it usually?
Oh man, hammerhead, pure acid and Gladstone, relic waves, oneshot, all of the Korg drum machines, now that I think about it- I use Bilboa, Recife, London, Gladstone on OCTACHRON most often.
The list of apps that are midi mapped already is pretty big...
Thanks, will definitely have a look. The list is impressive!
Groovebox has a good randomizer but no auv3
Drambo has a very good sequencer
GR-16 and GR-2 have fill notes that only activate when you press shift
GarageBand drum machine sequencer is awesome too, but you can have custom sounds... I guess Logic Pro can.
Drumcomputer has everything you ask for.
Thanks, will check those out! I always forget GarageBand!
I tried it out a bit, and it really is close to what I'm looking for! But couldn't find how to randomize the drum synths individually... If you have a moment to point how to achieve this, I'd appreciate!
Can someone who has experience with Battalion tell me if it ticks all those features? Can it generate fills? I think I've read somewhere that it should come out soon?
Seconding @Philandering_Bastard, your post basically describes Drumcomputer. The kit randomization and fill generators can both get kind of out-there, but there are lots of dials to turn to get a more directed result. And the sequencer is second-to-none.
From memory, I think you have to tap on the individual drum icons on the mixer page (sorry, of I'm wrong)
After watching a few videos, I think you're right! I guess it was too much in my face 😅 Thanks for pointing out!
I addition to what @tyslothrop1 said, you can also push the icon on the main page, below ‚Global‘ upper left corner.
Today I tried running Modal in OCTACHRON with the Midi Mapping "General Midi 16" - really cool melodies
Thanks for getting back! I am still on the fence about Octachron, as I normally prefer apps with integrated sequencers for ease of use/faster workflow. But all I read about it is really good. What in your opinion makes it special? What do you like/use the most?
+1
Man, where do I load/find in AUM those already made midi maps?
@marcuspresident those are found inside Octachron’s settings menu
it's in Ochtacron specifically, not AUM. the screensht just shows Ochacron hosted in AUM
Aha! Then I see. Thanks.
as far as plug-ins that have EVERYTHING you've asked about it’s only drumcomputer or battalion. everything else is missing one or two features from your list.
Drumcomputer is excellent, and is available right now on the App Store. Battalion is a little deeper in my opinion with more synthesis options and a few other nice to haves. It should arrive on the App Store in somewhere around the month. I’m guessing from all the buzz.
Yeah I'm closely following Battalions iOS release. I like the videos I'm seeing from the desktop version! I might just wait for it to be released instead of buying DrumComputer, I prefer somewhat Battalions sound. But Drumcomputers sequencer is very fun to use (using the free version)!
If you're interested in seeing a selection of iOS drum (and sequencer) apps playing MIDI into an external app (in this case BeatHawk), you can just fast forward (because its over 30 mins!) through this video to the ones you're curious about and get a little insight into them. There's no deep dive, and it's very loose, but you might pick up on something helpful:
Octachron
Playbeat 3
Digistix 2
EG Nodes
SDS-X Drums
MidiStep
EG Pulse
mKer
Prism MIDI Sequencer
Neon Sequencer
Hammerhead
Pure Acid
BAM
Helium
Waiting for Batalian myself and then obviously getting used to standard sequencing, where you point an apps worth of midi tracks at a single drum machine.
This is my made drum machine to get away from input sequencing to grids ( and even using drum pad controllers ) for live jams.
Which is kinda lazy but I guess a bit of freedom to alter pattern as you go ( usually at the cost of direct thought of, patterns )
Loopy is basically the Euclidean controller, where as this were usually the duty of a faderfox pc12.
Where you dont tweak patterns that much.
Seemed best to make a screen controller instead and have a faderfox Pc12 for other stuff.
This is a 3 ipad system though for live jam ( just 1 ipad in vid )
So doubt id be using this made drum thing without 3 ipad system.
Quite cool as its kinda just ' iv just midi mapped everything , Lets give it a blast '
Theres a slight patttern change at 3.35 ( along with master tempo change )
and you can actually make drums at 20bpm because of the euclidean speed.
So some good points for live jamming.
I made this in Drambo, it's on patchstorage, too. It's good for fills, not random, though, more hands on.
Drum computer
Drambo
This is good.
@sigma79 thanks:) Yours looks good, too. Cool, how the controls in loopy line up with the tracks in Drambo.
Its just a midi controller for each tracks euclidean module ( all euclidean knobs mapped ) Plus a decay module to shape in the mix. A volume. A couple of sends fx. Then use a hardware controller for drum fx.
Its not shown here but each track can use the screen keyboard to choose 1-16 sounds from each tracks fac drum.
If you wernt going to add a FAC drum per track with euclidean modules per track.
You should still be able to route a loopy midi controller. To a Drambo midi instance ( of multi tracks ) which output to one FAC drum.
All you kinda lose this way is not having 16 kicks. 16 snares. 16 hats. 16 claps etc. All able to trigger via key octave, when track chosen ( this isnt shown in vid because I havent made kits )
I mainly made it.
When setup is complete.
Will maybe make vids, where drums are like 300bpm, then dial it back and find a rythum ( euclidean )
So then all other sound sources and sequencing are kind of spontaneous, including live radio unit etc.
But tbh. It might actually sound a bit better if I just launch a made drum pattern etc and some decent trigger samples previously gained.
but the setup is quite controlable so may as well give the spontaneous a go.
Sometimes it is insane along with radio unit.
You playing piano. Then controlling mpe swams etc, whilst gaining radio unit samples ( live )
You end up jamming to sport commentary etc.
Its kinda mad.
My scratch turntable also turns around.
So I can even reach to scratch.
All from the same sitting position.
