So what’s up with the loopy pro update?

I can’t seem to find any details on if and when this will be released. Am I missing something?

There isn't any information about when other than "when it's ready," and that it's unfortunately taking longer than expected.

The answer to "if", is "definitely".

Ironically I bought Loopy Pro in May last year, just after the last update.

Before then updates were coming in periodically, but they stopped as soon as i bought in! It's getting close to a full year without an update. :'(

While I'd like mor frequent updates with the features I want, I'm more than happy to pay the very reasonble price for the version that I have today!

  • @quadbus - the update is huge. It's coming. Feels close now, but there's no scheduled release date yet.

Development hasn't slowed, it's just that the features being added involve major changes and are also all interrelated. They're not the kind of changes that can be rolled out little by little.

I can guarantee you, there hasn't been any idle time. Development is ongoing at an aggressive pace behind the scenes.

(I'm saying this as a beta tester watching progress every day, not speaking for the developer in any way.)

  • Nice. Exciting.

"Hooray, a year without updates for Loopy Pro - now a new Loopy Pro version, please pay and be happy!"

Normally, the Loopy Pro offer was structured so that you receive updates for one year, and one would expect these updates to be as frequent and substantial as in previous years. At purchase, it was clearly communicated that "future updates are included" and previously, these updates had always come regularly. I purchased my Loopy Pro update on February 4, 2024. Well, €17.99 for almost two months of updates, since the last update was released on April 28, 2024. I assume the new version will cost the same amount.

Interestingly, it appears that I've essentially funded the development of Loopy Pro 2 with my purchase, only to have to pay for this version again in full when it's released. Yet Loopy Pro 2 primarily features just a new MIDI sequencer and according to the developer "represents a significant update to the existing Loopy Pro application" - so it's not an entirely new product, but rather an extension of the existing platform. Moreover, I've already paid for all the previous Loopy Pro updates as well.

I assume the Loopy Pro developer won't embarrass himself by celebrating the following anniversary on April 28, 2025: "Finally, a year without updates!" and then charging the same amount again for people who haven't gotten much value from their development support for Loopy Pro over the past year. Instead, I expect the new Loopy Pro version will actually be released by April 28 at the latest. Well, just to be safe, I'm already checking if my wallet is sufficiently filled to pay for this new update too.

As someone for whom the MIDI update is also important and who has been waiting for it for a long time, I would have naturally preferred an earlier release. I now check every few days to see if anything new arrives. The quality of the Loopy Pro update and its pricing will determine whether I become a satisfied paying customer again.

Honestly, I would be pleased if the workflow becomes more intuitive, especially regarding the handling of loops within the timeline workflow. The best implementation I've ever seen is the new development of Logic Pro. They've done it exactly as I imagined it - actually even better. Everything can be immediately understood and applied intuitively. I didn't find this aspect of Loopy Pro to be quite as well implemented so far. But well, we're in the realm of dreams and wishes here. I remain very curious!

    Well played sir!

  • @ImroEns

When you pay for an update, you pay for the previous updates. There is one year of free updates if they come, and I consider it's a courtesy of Michael rather than a contract 😉
Anyway, I think @wim explained well the reason of the delay

@Etienne: You are in the right party 🙂

  • The first release of Loopy Pro took longer than anyone expected. It was worth the wait. I believe this will be too.

Strange. I see last update "Append Merge Mode" from 30.10.2024 in my "Owned upgrades" window. I purchased Loopy Pro on 08.10.2023.

Michael has been flexible about the one year counter in the past. Had to bug him a couple of times to get on the ball and make me pay. 😂

It happened that for quite a while we were able to steadily roll features out, but there wasn’t a representation that there would be a constant stream of new features.

As has been discussed a few times on the forum, these rolling updates stopped being possible/practical as 2.0 required some major restructuring and Michael needed to focus on that. Maintaining two code bases was getting cumbersome and hampering progress on 2.0 which has taken longer than expected.

Michael has worked hard the whole time. Sometimes complex software takes a lot longer to implement and debug than one would like. And development of large projects is unpredictable. We thought we were within weeks of being done back in November and realized that there was some re-architecting that needed to be done. The entry of a new round of beta testers turned up issues that needed some time to address properly. Michael programs for the long haul rather than slap together quick fixes.

There is much more to the update than MIDI looping. Hopefully, you will find the new features worthwhile.

So, in Germany, clocks work a little differently – and our calendar doesn’t quite function like it does in the UK, the US, or anywhere else in the world.
For us, April 28 is exactly the same date as October 30 is for @filo01 and May 23 in the Loopy Pro Roadmap changelog.
We also have 25 hours in a day and 369 days in a year. 😉

Hey, no offense to Michael – I like his calm way of explaining things, I like the app, and I really appreciate that he focuses on developing it in a stable way.
Otherwise, artists like Dub FX wouldn’t have switched from Boss to Loopy Pro.

What I wrote was, of course, subjective.
I wasn’t planning to file a complaint with the International Court of App Development.
Everything I write here is written with love for Loopy Pro.

We shouldn’t be making plans for Michael – even a kangaroo needs space to bounce.
