Seriously: I use a Roland SP-404 MKII for offscreen fun.
It is not synth based, but You could (very easy) sample your iPad synths into it, and use it as a arranger/sound manipulator
It should be noted that soldering only becomes relaxing well after you’ve ruined many $$ of components learning how not to screw it up. 😉
At night I switch to my accoustic guitar. Very calming.
Glad to help.
Have you tried an op-z…can you compare your thoughts?
Sorry - I never have. I have the MC101, which is very capable, but the Seqtrak is more fun. the built-in 4-op dx synth is great. Some people slam the build quality, though.
Over 40 years and I still suck.
That's what I was going to suggest. Looks over budget but a total beast when you understand it. Cheapest I sound in a 10 second search was $385. Mine cost AU$730.
Embrace the Deluge.
There’s a job for everyone in Solderland.
Very interesting and surprising story for me. I am hardware-mosty guy for probably 4 or 5 years.. I bought Deluge maybe year ago. On paper - huge. Was really happy i catched it for very friendly price. Massive list of features. Was expecting this is final solution of my HW-only production question.
In reality - yeah, features were there. But somehow, it didn't click with me - i found it just overcomplicated in terms of workflow (all the time need to go inside/outside of various menu levels). Also the synth engine sounded to me a bit flat, uninteresting when compared to let's say Digitone.
Tried for 6 months. Failed, sold it. This is not about learning curve - basically for me there is absolutely fast learnong curve for everything, it takes me usuale 2 max 3 weeks to deeply indersdtand all features and this was no different case. But simply, i didn't like workflow.
Mayme Elektron is too deeply imprinted in my brain, so brain refuses to accept anything else
Thanks all input especially those devices/approach I never heard/thought of.
I used to live in one of the most expensive city where the average properity price is like 20 year+ of average annual income(very low tax) and I have to travel quite often. Which means I don't have too much space to store stuffs and I have even limited storage while travelling. The result is I spend way too much time on my Macbook/iPad screen and I started worrying about it.
One portable standalone device is all I can have. So far I really like both Model:Cycles and OP-Z.
M:C has way MORE room for projects and patterns, 96 project x 96 patterns(64 steps, LESS tracks(6) and basically a mono device. Synth-based.
OP-Z has MORE tracks but only 10 projects x 32 chains of 16 patterns(16 steps) which is fairly limited yet it offer POLYPHONY on the lead(2) and chord(6) tracks.
I guess I'm happy to jam with either device but I am now leaning to M:C for more projects/patterns/steps and the trade off of giving up meaningful polyphony might be kinda less is more limitation as I can imagine I will make similar music on OP-Z like on iPad
edit: I will spare a month or 2 for a better deal and also explore OP-Z more as I only heard of it this week
This looks fun:

Also consider Ableton move
Or maybe a Polyend Tracker (OG, not the +). It doesn't quite hit ALL the requirements but used it hits price.
@jklovemusic have you had a look at the Sonicware “Liven” grooveboxes?
I don’t have one, and I’m not 100% sure they tick all of your requirement boxes (especially regarding the “lifetime storage”), but they can be found pretty cheap on Reverb.
Also, what about the Korg Volcas?
Digitone sounds nicer Dendy.
What about yamaha seqtrak for the op or just buy an elektron.
The Zed baby.
It's actually way deeper than it sounds.
First of all, it offers way more polyphony than that. For example, the drum tracks can be duophonic, so you can layer two kick samples, for example. The lead track offers up to 3 or 4 voices I think, and the arp track can be polyphonic as well (not 100% sure whether the bass track is mono only).
Second, its greatest power lies in step components. Use the conditional ones together with modifiers, and the possibilities are limitless. You can easily turn a 16 step pattern into a 128 step one with clever use of step components (with trigger, ignore parameter lock and ignore component).
Thought about pairing this with my M8. $249.

Looks the bomb.
This lools really good, maassive amount of features !
oooooh. Tempting.
I knew I should have kept the hell away from this thread. 😖
The woovebox web browser based interface isn't compatible with Safari/iOS.
Maybe that'll be enough to talk me out of it. Fingers crossed ...
Let's add more oil to this fire :-D

And some music:

I don't need this one, i have M8. I don't need this one, i have M8. I don't need this one, i have M8.
The Woovebox is awesome for sure, I have it as well, but since I have had a few years of head start with the OP-Z, I still find myself preferring it. If I got both of them at the same time - who knows...
I got what you mean and I actually hear exactly the same demo from Woovebox official site with just 1 generative pattern for the whole song.
edit: I found the music produced on OP-Z are generally sounds more stright forward with focus on composing. I haven't come across works with heavy sound modulation as on works from M:C or other typical grooveboxes. Show me some OP-Z work with lots of sound modulation/automation if you have heard them, thanks.
@rezidue
Thanks for introducing the Woovebox. This look insane on paper and they can back up songs/pitch/samples that covered 16 song limitation.
I have to check out how this thing sequence and handle automation. M:C has far less features but with almost everything hand-on control.
I do have to think clear if I want to make this a regular full production device as that mean I have to maintain another ecosystem other than iPad.
Imagine I have an idea and I want to apply that, I can just do it on M:C on the fly as I believe it will take a decade for me to produce 96 serious projects on it. But on Woovebox, if the song is not on device I have to backup a song, restore the song I want to make the change then backup and export the audio again. It sounds like a lot of work. If I just keep jamming on it and only keep the wav as backup this Woovebox is really feature/future-proofed for my not so great production level. @wim get it and make it your last purchase haha
That's more or less the main weakness of the OP-Z: you don't have enough proper modulation. Every track has one amp envelope and one LFO that you can use to fake a second envelope (for the filter, for example). Everything else is done by motion recording (well, plus parameter locks and step components, if you can count them as modulation).
Anyway, here's my track that I believe showcases some (not all) OP-Z strengths really well. All is done on the OP-Z, except compression (DDMF MDES).
I guess that's why most OP-Z users enjoy the relatively faster workflow.
I also found how easy OP-Z backup the whole thing which is a plus.

Will take my time and make the decision
