New app from TC-Helicon - Voice Jam Studio

Hey all - I just did a quick review of Voice Jam Studio from TC-Helicon. It's a looper with some nice vocal presets (50 of them, actually). It's a nice app. It's AB and IAA compatible. Intro launch price of $9.99 USD. They've got some good tutorials on YouTube (they might not be live yet on YouTube, but they're linked in my review).

  • reading your review right now but just wanted to ask what other app would be the best comparison for voice jam studio?

  • nice review and thank you. only thing I missed was how intensive do you think the app is, guess cause I'm on an iPad 3 I'm always thinking about that?

  • also Sean is there a way to just paste audio into the app by any chance?

  • this is really nice, always wanted a TC-Helicon now I can have one for £6.99. The effects on this are unreal

I don't believe there is any other way of getting audio in other than by recording.

I would say this app is a combo of VocalLive/Singaling and Loopy. I guess the selling point is having it all combined in one app.

  • Is it possible to edit the preset FX?

  • Thanks, Sean. A nice review.

I own a TC-Helicon unit, and one of the things I love is that it changes the harmonization based on the guitar chord you play. So the harmonies will be different if you play a Dm7 versus D major.

Are you aware of any apps that do something like this? Even monitoring incoming MIDI would be great and expand the power of harmonizing apps. I have put in requests to developers of the various vocal effects I own. Thanks!

  • Inter app audio and audiobus will make for some nice backing with korg karma to sing loops over. This looks like one of those apps that just strikes from out of no where and bam there it is. It looks like tons of fun.

  • Spot on! it is tons of fun.

  • I have to wait until Friday to purchase. I am hoping to see videos of external sounds and interapp ect. while I wait . Hello Doug?? Are you trying this yet?

    Nice review Mister Sean.

  • Hi,
it says that has MIDI sync, but do you know If it is MIDI mappable?

  • the iTunes descript also says it has copy paste, but that might only be for getting audio out, I sure hope they didn't implement copy paste in one direction only.

  • It has ACP in

  • Yeah, I think if you select the file icon (top right) and then 'Loop transfer' you get a simple choice to Audio paste into a specific track (of the four), Audio copy said track, or send to 'Documents' (ITunes no doubt). Haven't tested it yet (the acp), but had a lot of fun fiddling around and then more serious fun very quickly forgoing the looping and just recording via AB into Auria. And yeah, some nice effects. Would like to know our friend @supadom would do with it...

  • Can your record from line in to one of the tracks?

  • ohhhhhhh gotta get it now

  • core audio ????

Well, I'm recording voice through an Apogee, so I don't see why not...

IAA works fine with Auria. I just ran it up on GB as well as a test and it works fine too. Neither produced a transport bar in VJS, but both worked....haven't tested any others yet, but will.

  • this looks pretty nice. how's the latency? how's the pitch correction?

  • is there a simple, not over-done pitch correction?

  • Latency seems fine, not an issue so far. Can't speak to pitch correction. Some of the voices/effects are good. Even the 'kids toys'/megaphones etc are quality versions of that kind of thing, but -SO FAR- I haven't been able to figure out how to adjust the individual effects. Having said that there are a couple of buttons that I haven't been smart to figure out and a major slider that runs down the whole UI (when activated) from 'High' to 'Low' that -again- I haven't been able to make DO anything, but it surely does.

Yup. Need a Doug video :) Also rarely come across an app (and it's super simple, I'm just missing a couple of things) that could so immediately benefit from contextual help....

No doubt brighter students will chip in. All I can say is that it works with others it seems and is easy to get going with. Perhaps more than anything, a couple of hours after purchase I don't have that empty MSG feeling :)

It does have a very good in-app tutorial that is simple and informative. It runs at first start up and can be delved into at leisure. Consists of 80 small snapshots of relevant detail and is worth running through at least once. It covers all the controls in an interactive fashion.

  • The presets do sound great, high quality...I'd love to have this in the AB effects slot!

The large slider mentioned by Johnny controls pitch but it may not be obvious on presets that do not directly manipulate pitch, such as reverb, I suppose. I don't think it's possible to adjust effects otherwise, not even dry/wet. The knobs on the right side of the tracks seem to be for post-processing only.

  • If it has no MIDI control I probably won't use it at all. Does anyone know the developer?

  • Thought I was going to buy this today, until I experimented with recording vocals via Turnado and GarageBand - which kind of does everything the app can do except the live looping thing.

Needs a few more features before I spend any cash, though I'd have bought it if I didn't have Turnado

  • I'm having a problem with my loops getting out of time with the metronome after repeated playback. Anybody else seeing this?
I sent a message to the developer and they sent back a FAQ link on how to adjust the tempo.

  • What mmp said bout the pitch and The thing with the clock on the left is to freeze the sound.

  • I'd love to @JohnnyGoodyear to get my teeth into it but I've made an unconscious decision of not buying anything that doesn't fit into my looping workflow. Also hearing that it is rather limited in tweaking possibilities and no midi makes it even less appealing for live work. It seems to be targeted at those who want to record vocals into a daw or strictly a vocalist. A bit like vocalive which I didn't like that much personally. Good vocal effects seem to be also resource heavy and my air AB set up is packed so will have to make do with magellan for now.
Having said all that, if the developer sent me a promo code who knows what might happen ;)
