I’m actually quite touched that Matt has created King of VHS. The app I miss the most is Retro Piano, but I’ve bought this one as a thank you for the gesture.

Aw, that's nice. Let bygjohns be bygjohns. 😇

    groan 🤣

Retro Piano doesn't have 3rd party trackers anymore.

That’s good to know, though I’ve been working on a couple of alternatives in case I need them. Its main advantage was if I needed something like that quickly it didn’t need a lot of work to set up and risk killing the flow, but I think I’ve got it largely covered now.

Yeh, I used it for the same purpose.

@AnalogMatthew could you consider the option of locking the sample used? I have the same gripe that had with VHS (of course, they are the same samples) of sometimes finding very different timbres from one note to the next that throw me off my flow lol.

I could resample the patches but I would lose all the LFOs, I hope you can consider that (a switch to freeze the last played samples would be enough for me)

Actually, I remembered the oddity of timbres mismatch on og VHS synth. To be more precise, I just checked the VHS synth, it's not on every preset, but on many patches the transition from C3 to Db3 and from C5 to Db5 is very noticeable. Does King of VHS behave the same way?

yes, they use the same sample pack

I don’t know, i feel a lot safer when an app tracks me and has access to all my data! What a rip off!! I’ll just email you my social and all my passwords!

Jokes aside this is a great sounding synth! First iOS app I’ve bought in months.. can’t wait to build a little sample library from this.

Any chance this would ever be universal for macOS!???

    1. Still really like this one.
    2. I noticed some patch banks missing from the original: can those be imported?
    3. On iPhone 16 Pro, it’s hard to scroll down to the lower banks and presets unless you minimize the keyboard.

Thank you again for crowning this app / giving it the “King of” treatment.

Late one freezing night many years ago, like a dummy, I pulled over to ask a lady walking home in the cold if she needed a lift. Turned out she was a hooker (duh). One of the lines she used as I was trying to get her out of the car was "You won't be sorry! I'll make you feel like a king!" 😂

However Matt has demonstrated time and again he is trustworthy, majority here are very grateful for his awesome work

    +1.

Some very petty comments in this thread.

This is a developer who even has an app he gives away for free:

All by one person so it appears. Funny how this person didn't show up for a few weeks until a couple days ago just to whinge about the rest of us excited for the updated version of VHS Synth, as if someone were trying to peer pressure him to purchase it. 😂

A pretty entertaining but pointless rant nevertheless. I guess @AnalogMatthew has one less customer, and nothing of real value was lost. Keep on with the keep on, Matt. 💪

  • Yep, £3;99, just go without ya beer or fags instead of bloody whining 😜

Great synth, I love it 🥰

I’m really hoping @AnalogMatthew will see fit to do this. Nabbed this after using the original in a bunch of projects and being to transfer it all over to desktop without rendering the audio is a huge plus.

  • I don’t like the feeling of being “pushed” into re-purchasing something, especially something immaterial.

But I guess these things happen. Will carefully consider if this is something I either want or need.

Is there something weird going on with the Audiokit Pro apps in terms of DSP usage?

I have King of VHS, FM, SAGA, and SNESynth, and in Cubasis on my M4 iPad Pro I'm getting spikes of 17% DSP when just playing a few notes, regardless of the preset, and with just one instance.

Then it kind of settles down to around 5-6%. Even there, isn't that a bit high for what essentially are romplers?

But every time there's a gap and I play again, there are these spikes.

Or am I understanding it wrong?
    (M4 iPad Pro 16GB RAM, up-to-date software)

Edit: the DSP usage reported is on par with my Moog Model 15, which is supposed to be hungrier...

I can understand the feeling, but really, nobody is pushing you into anything. There's nothing stopping you continuing with the app you have. It's owned by a different company, that's all. That would be the same whether or not this new app came along.

If you're concerned about the very minor invasion of privacy represented by the 3rd party advertising tracker in the app you own, you can disable it in under a minute through iOS privacy settings.

This new app is in no way an obligation. It's a generous opportunity should you want to get away from the business practices of the company that purchased the older version, and should you want some additional sounds.

If it makes you feel any better about it, it costs less than an IAP preset pack with all the new sounds would have in the old app even if it wasn't sold. But the main point is, there's no reason you need to feel you're being pushed into anything, unless you just want to feel that way, or can't help it.

  • @AnalogMatthew: is there a way to import preset banks from the original VHS Synth into King of VHS?

The world’s tiniest violin sounds like something Audiothing with collaborate with Hainbach to put out lol

The Wabi Sabi Waves updated preset pack (currently sold separately for $4.00) will be included for free in an update for anyone who buys before April 30th

    EDIT, OUT NOW:
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/king-of-vhs-vcr-synth/id6743419642

As soon as I saw it was out and by AK I bought it. How do I install this preset pack? Forgive me for my Ludditism. I couldn’t find it in the app or on the App Store.

  • It’s does state it will be included in a free update😜

  • Love this; thanks so much.

  • Thank you for all your beautiful comments. Thanks for your patience, the school year is just ending (as many of you know, I run some music tech programs at a local university)

Unfortunately, the original preset format was partially encrypted (and not fully open JSON like my newer apps). The original developer is no longer w/ AudioKit, so the code load those isn't available to me.

yes, they use the same sample pack

The legacy "older" samples are the same.
However, the newer samples are much smoother keymapped, but still beautifully low-fi

And @cokomairena, thank you, I hear you about the locking option, that's something a little challenging w/ the current app setup.

I held out on grabbing this because I was really fond of the presets of the original VHS synth, and saw that some were duplicated so I passed. I ended up grabbing it to get me thru the j6 wait, and it’s really, better. Awesome score for $3.99. If you held off because you have the original, this is a great opportunity to own a better iteration without losing your beloved originals.

    SOLD!

  • Just “upgraded” from VHS Synth as a down payment on J6.

  • Thanks folks! It really does help.
    Appreciate you 🙏🙌
