Patterning 3.1 - macOS, AU Parameters, MIDI File Export and More
Hey everyone!
Wanted to hop in to share about the Patterning 3.1 update.
This is a major and free update that has been in the works for many months.
The biggest news is that Patterning will now run on macOS. It runs as both as a standalone app, and as an AUv3 plugin in hosts like Logic and Ableton Live. I've already made a demo video showing how it works in Ableton, and I'll be making more videos and tutorials now that I've wrapped up this phase of development for a minute.
The update is free for users of Patterning, and if you've purchased the app on the iPad the Mac version is free (and vice versa).
Unfortunately, however, there is glitch in the AppStore where it will show the full price on the Mac even if you own the app already. Just click on the button to buy, and you will quickly be shown this message :
This update is free because you own a previous version of this item. To get this update now, click OK.'
I've already contacted Apple about this, but it seems to be a long standing issue. Please let me know if you run into any issues.
Also, annoyingly, the Mac App Store doesn't carry over the reviews and ratings from the iPad store, so do me a favor and post your reviews and ratings on the Mac Store once you've had a chance to check it out.
Patterning 3.1 is here with macOS support, AU Parameters, MIDI export and more.
Hello Fellow Noise-Makers!
I'm very pleased to announce the release of Patterning 3.1! This is a major and free update that has been in the works for many months.

In addition to macOS support, this release adds AU Parameters, MIDI Export, and more... see below for the complete list.

Man! Thank you for the Mac release!!! Super stoked about this.
I’ll leave a new review on the App Store for the Mac version!
Very kind of you to offer this to us for free …. Patterning 3 is one of the biggest things I’ve been missing from my life since getting back into ableton!
Drag and drop MIDI is going to be absolutely amazing for writing songs 🤯🫠
Thanks for this update and macOS support!
Unfortunately I get constant freezes inside Reaper after I close Patterning in the Reaper plugin window and I have to force quit Reaper.
MacBook Air M3 16gb macOS Sequoia 15.4.1
And Reaper version 7.36
Thanks, I'll check it out. I haven't tested in Reaper.

I am still unable to DL the mac version… but its trying!!
Thanks for the fantastic free update to my favourite IOS drum machine. Is there a way to resize the UI within Ableton to make it bigger?
I'll look into it!
Which country are you in? I feel like I'm seeing more of these issues outside the US... just trying to gather info at this point. I'm beyond annoyed at the App Store for making this so difficult!
Hey it went after a few tries!
Usa here… i think the App Store is just bugging out
This instrument is amazing in ableton!!
I am still unable to download the update to my Mac Mini from the appstore. It takes me to the purchase screen but the "purchase" button is missing. Any hints on how to remedy this? Thanks for this great update though!
Doesn't work on Intel Macs
Yeah, unfortunately that’s how “Designed for iPad” apps are. Intel Macs can’t run iOS apps.
I am going to talk to Apple again this morning, I’m having multiple issues with the App Store. Hopefully they can resolve it.
No worries @benkamen. This Macbook pro is on its last legs anyway....so I'll probably be using P3 on desktop within the year
Thank you for this great update!
@benkamen thanks for this great update , yet to download but,
I assume projects are inter-transferable between mac & IOS ,
if so suprised you don’t list this in the features , & is there a tutorial for best practice transfer .
Yea of course! Best practice is to use “Export Audio & MIDI” to make an onps file… then airdrop that over.
Thanks for the suggestion.
App doesn't show in my history as being purchased even though it is. I get the full price, I click on that, I get "Buy App" then a "purchase" button for the full price. Not taking a chance on clicking that as I don't want to pay twice ! This is in Canada App store btw!
Have you gone to the store and looked at your purchase history? It shows all apps and IAPs, the price you paid and the date. This is different from the list of purchased apps.
Purchase history (on the iPad) will only show last 30-90 days. Once I filter to show previous years, the wheel turns endlessly after I hit the apply button. It shows I bought 8 apps but will not show which apps.
My problem is with my Mac. When I do purchase history for iPhone/iPad apps, this is where I download iPad apps that work on silicon Macs. Patterning 3 is not there! The only way to see it is when I do a search where it shows I must pay $40CDN to purchase something I already own!
You can set the purchase history to farther back than than 30-90. Every purchase you have is listed. You might have to go year by year
My understanding is that if you really did purchase , you have to through the purchase process and then are told that you already own the app. This happens on iPhones too if an iPad app goes universal after your initial purchase.
I also had this problem recently - can’t properly view previous years etc. Try using https://reportaproblem.apple.com on your web browser instead to view your purchased apps.
I'm getting the pay message as well for the Mac version even though I've bought the iPad version previously. No idea what'll happen if I actually hit the button!
Thanks everyone for your patience with this. I have an active support ticket with Apple.
If there is someone who was charged for the Mac version after purchasing Patterning 3 on the iPad... please get in touch so I can forward Apple your info.
Specifically :
• Store country or region
• Affected devices including the model and OS version
• Approximate Date/Time the error occurred, including time zone.
• Was the app purchased originally as a pre-order?
Several of the people who were charged didn't actually own P3, but rather v1 or 2..... It's only free for P3 owners, which I didn't make clear enough, apparently!!! My bad on that!
I definitely own Patterning 3. I purchased it before it was released! If I put in a regular search (not purchase history) it shows that I own it by showing the "open" button. It also appears in "My Apps"
In Apple's "reportaproblem" website it shows I purchased it for $24.99 CDN on May 23rd 2024 (pre-order)
On my Mac I when I search Patterning 3, it appears in the iPhone & iPad Apps but with a $39.99CDN charge. Also, when I search my iPad app history using my Mac appstore app it does not appear. However, if I click on my account settings, it does appear when I filter for last year's purchases.
@QuietBrian - I believe that's just the age-old App Store behavior when an app becomes available on an additional platform. I've never experienced or heard of anyone actually being charged, even though you have to go to every single step as though you're buying it. (That is with the assumption that the Mac and the iOS devices are signed in with the same Apple ID.) At the very, very last step, after you agree to pay it says you already paid and asks if you'd like to download it for free. 🙄
It's your money though, so your choice whether or not to risk it.
I just tried it and after the buying approval sign in it paused for a heart stopping moment and then said this update is free…
It worked for me as well.
The process is scary, but works as people describe
