Dressed to the Nines

Original tune made in Cubasis with real bass and guitars (and a little help from drummer Kyle in Garageband).
Bass: Swing Jazz -> DI
Strandberg -> Minotaur Klon -> MRH810 (York Audio V30 IR cab) -> Delay3000 -> MagicDeathEye Stereo -> Envelope

Can you guess the time signature?

Comments

  • Time signature...idk, let's say 7/8 time? All I know is I'm vibing out right now to this smoky funky tune.

And Cubasis ftw! What's crazy is, last year I swapped between DAWs, looking for the eventual replacement for Nanostudio 2, because I had a feeling someday it would be discontinued. Cubasis took the longest for me to get used to, but once I got used to it, it became sort of an extension of my brain. (I was used to just using it for vocal recording and processing, but not for more creative endeavors).

So yeah, now the piece just finished. Satisfying to listen to from start to finish.

  • A fun listen. Very Easterish😉. You can import drums from GarageBand into Cubasis?

  • Really enjoyed it, I’m a big fan of 70s jazz rock fusion so this hit the spot for me. Great tune as well as the (obviously) excellent playing and production 🙏

  • Wow man, this is awesome. I don't care much for covers no matter how brilliant so hearing an original pbegium is a real treat. 😀
    More to come, I hope..

    5/4 ?
    I can dig it!

  • Funny piece, Paul. It seems the main riff is some kind of compound triple measure, I'd say 9/4. The break or chorus is in 4/4 if I'm not wrong.

Thanks for listening and liking. Time signature hint is in the title. As an iPhone user Cubasis does all I need (and a lot more). I’ve got used to its workflow, but truth be told I still miss the midi editor of NS1&2.

Yes you can, take a look here. It's a bit of an effort, but worth it in my opinion. Kyle handled this odd meter admirably. Top tip is to import your bass (or other rhythmic track of your choosing) and get the drummer to 'follow' it. Thanks for listening, Mike. Happy Easter!

I'm in the same boat. Miss NS2's MIDI editor, but love Cubasis which does everything I need. ☺️

    9/8 time sig?

Kind of what I was going for, hoping to be a bit more modern jazz rock fusion. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening, liking, and commenting.

Interesting. I haven't really thought deeply about covers, but just hearing a good melody (or chord progression) makes me want to play it - I have a long list of tunes I want to mess with. I guess it's difficult to come up with good melodies, so why not use someone else's. Thanks for listening and the kind words, much appreciated.

There's nothing wrong getting inspiration and even "borrowing" straight off the bat, but if you make it your own from that, there's no reason to involve where you got it from. That's just confusingly honest. We all borrow from something, if it's subconscious or intentional doesn't really matter.

It's a long story why I feel an aversion against covers (I do mean when it's nearly just another copy) and I'm not going to bore you with it. ☺️

  • Excellent playing and I really like this tune. A fun groove and the odd time signature adds to the fun.

  • I needed the hint to detect the 9/8 time signature but it does have some bars in 4/4.

My favorite rock concert of all time as seeing John McLaughlin’s “Mahavishnu Orchestra” in 1974 at the Long Beach Arena.
They have odd meters down cold… wicked Hungarian lines crafted by Jan Hammer. They totally confused a Rock audience hoping for some kick ass rock and roll and getting kick ass Jazz-Ethnic-Fusion played by 5 virtuosos.

There was this funny moment where Jan Hammer played something like a Blues lick cliche and one guy yelled “Rock and Roll”.
It was similar to the rather formulaic music Jan Hammer created later for Miami Vice and his recognition rose dramatically.
    Rock on, Jan.

Great project @pbelgium… I hope @flo hears this one.

  • @pbelgium ,
    This is good.
    Bravo

Thanks for playing, and indeed you're correct, 9/8, and even got the 4/4 section as well (spot on @McD, @jwmmakerofmusic). Inspiration came from the brilliant but underrated Drumgenius app - it's like the drummer's bible and much more fun than any metronome to jam with. The track 'emerged' from a Greek 'Karsilamas' rhythm with subdivisions 2-2-2-3. (I ended up with a 3-2-2-2, a 2-2-2-3 into the 4/4 break.)
    Thanks for listening.

Totally agree with you - I unashamedly borrow a lot. I plan to do more originals in the future (Can I make one album?), but I hope you will listen to the covers I occasionally post.

  • Thanks @flo, much appreciated. And thanks for listening and liking @MadeofWax.

Nice story, Dave. Would have loved to have been at that concert. When the Miami Vice thing happened I was working in a record warehouse (Polydor?Polygram?) and was given all the singles for free - never played them, I couldn't believe this was the same guy on Wired and There & Back.

  • With my prog leaning tendencies this stuff really appeals to me. So good to listen to mixed up time signatures and fabulous guitar tones. Excellent mix and production as well as first class playing. Really, really good.

  • Thanks for listening, liking and the kind words @BillS, happy you liked it.

  • Great track. Does remind me of McLaughlin / Hammer - something in the tone and phrasing. And I think it is masterly use of compound time signatures when they are not immediately obvious. I shall look into that GB export - thanks.

Thanks for the kind words Andy. I'm a thumb (and 1 or 2 fingers) player, so don't have the chops of Mr McLaughlin - monster player even now. It's fascinating that someone like Brubeck could make an odd meter sound natural - we do like our 4's. Good luck with the GB midi export. If you don't need to edit, the easier option is just to export a wav file. Thanks for listening.
