Thoughtless

This is an acoustic piano album from 30 years ago. But remastered. Recorded with a Tascam DAT. Playing on a 1915. Steinway B.
I was a lot more flexible back then. But I hear the roots of what I’ve done lately. Worth a listen, perhaps.

  • Thanks for sharing this Mike! I had a listen to the first couple tracks last night. Really good!

  • Thx @Edward_Alexander Hope all is well with you. Several yrs now no smoking?

  • I always beautiful @LinearLineman, thank you for sharing this 🙏
Do you typically write from noodling on the piano or do you ever notate music?

  • Oh no, I’m done with those damn things. That was my last time quitting.

Now if I could just quit the restaurant business (the other thing shaving off years of my life)

Thanks for asking my friend! @LinearLineman

All tracks are very nice. I had a couple favorites. I like the sound of the piano. I could hear a little of the mechanics, and you working the damper pedal. I would imagine that option has been engineered into the higher end piano apps, but I don’t hear it very often. It’s a nice touch. I like it.

My first favorite is Flood for Love. It goes well with my current mood, a bit melancholy. My other fave is Lush Life. Brings back some memories. I first heard it in college. One of the guys on my floor was a music major. He invited me to listen to some Coltrane. Apparently, the next door neighbors didn’t care for it and started blasting Carouselambra by Zeppelin. That was a big album at the time. When my friend Rick found out there were multiple different album covers, he started buying them up to build a complete set. Not an easy thing to do considering they all came in a brown paper wrapper.

I also enjoy the session outtakes by Sinatra. They all sounded great to me, but he kept cutting it short. I often wonder what he heard that I missed. I also like listening to an improv on a somewhat familiar melody. I can follow it and hear where you’re taking it.

Hope you are having weather as nice as here on my patio. Not hot, not cold. Not a cloud in the sky. Karen bought some obscure, dark roast, limited supply, snobby coffee. It’s delicious. Now I just need a Yeti cup. Have a nice weekend.

  • lol @Paulieworld it’s a real piano! 1915 Steinway B. Recorded in the 90s. I like those tracks, too. Lush Life is a bit difficult chord wise. I think it’s in Ab.

Hot as shit here in Savannah. The summer is upon us and won’t let up for months. Time to ice up the Bombay Sapphire. Thx for the listen, bro.

    Bombay Sapphire… I’m on it!

  • Listening to your album made for a very nice evening, LL. I especially enjoyed Bird’s Blue Sphere and Ornithology

  • Thx for the investment of time @Blipsford_Baubie. Glad you found it worthwhile. Those were definitely Charlie Parker/ T.Sphere Monk days.

It was really satisfying for me to hear you do Thelonious, cause i can remember when listening to some of your other stuff, questioning whether or not i was hearing echos of his style. It was like an itch that needed scratching, wanting to hear you play him. Thank you.

Ok i only read your description now. Didn’t realize this was recorded so long ago. Thanks for resurfacing it. I try to dive straight into listening to people’s creations before reading about it. Expectations and subjectivity sometimes tarnishes my listening experience.

Thx @Blipsford_Baubie. Yes, Monk is a huge influence. I’ve done several in homage to him.
    Here’s more…

  • Thanks LL. These were a treat to listen to.

  • For some reason I preferred the second half to the first… probably just my mood at the time.
I’ve always wanted a solo piano album from you Mike so this was right up my street 🙏
PS I see number 93 has landed… keep up the good work 👍

  • Thx for listening @GeoTony. I also posted my very first, in case you missed it, which was a live concert.
Got some good reviews off it.
