Best Drum app

edited November 2014 in General App Discussion

Hi, I'm looking for a quality drum app focusing on just the sounds, no drum machine functions necessary as I want to trigger it via midi programmed in MultiTrackStudio (I do detailed score programming). I usually use Superior Drummer in Logic. What are the best options?

  • Are you looking for a drum app that uses sampled sounds or a drum synthesizer app? My favorite drum synth is SeekBeats but that doesn't take MIDI in. If you're looking for something to trigger drum samples, I'd personally recommend DrumJam.

Sampled Sounds. I already have the option to load samples using MusicStudio, Beat Machine or MTS. I'm just wondering if there is the equivalent to drum apps like Superior Drummer on iOS.

Ah, not sure as I've never used Superior Drummer. I would still stick with my DrumJam suggestion. It's a repository of great drum samples (done specifically for that app), with some really cool editing features in the "bedlam" mode, and there is no user-based sequencer on board (but you can trigger the sounds via-MIDI). The dev for DrumJam is active on this board and very helpful, too!

  • Check out DrumPerfect.

  • I don't think the sounds in DrumPerfect can be triggered via-MIDI In.

  • Hi, fellow MTS user here.

DrumPerfect is kind of the iOS standard for acoustic drums (though it can play any type of sample). However, I find it kind of a nightmare to program, even though it has legions of people that depend on it. But it would certainly make high quality loops, though I haven't tried MIDI.

DrumJam is a great app that gets a bad rap because of its "world beats" emphasis. It's really only the automated instruments that are oriented towards bongo drums, African/Asian instruments, etc. There are several straight rock kits, and if you can assign them to MIDI notes and velocities (which I haven't tried), that could be huge.

Another solution you may or may not have considered is the internal SoundFont player in MTS. SoundFont's garner mixed reviews because of a lot of the free ones you find online are from 1997-2002 and feature pretty low quality samples due to PC limitations at the time. In reality, a SoundFont is just a collection of audio samples, so the samples can be anything. I'm starting to assemble some .sf2 files based on acoustic drum samples I have on my computer (though I'm new at it). I might try to share some of them at some point on the MultiTrack Studio Tips, Tricks, and Updates thread.

But the point about SF's is that you should be able to swap different kits in and out so long as they are in General MIDI (GM) arrangement. So note 36 (C2) is always a bass drum, 38 & 40 are snares, etc. You can program the part using the excellent sequencers in MTS and adjust the sounds to match.

    Cheers. I'll look into those.
    @StormJH1 :
Thanks. Great post and food for thought.

  • @pichi I am the developer of Beat Machine, and also a longtime user of superior drummer on the desktop (since 2004). Sorry to tell you this, but there ain't nothing like superior drummer for iOS. I just use a MacBook Air with a hard drive drangled off of it. Maybe someday iOS will be able to do it...

  • @dreamless : Oh well ... Samples it is then. BTW I like your app - simple and quick to use.

  • My app and many others on iOS are good for simple repetitive beats, but I still reach for superior drummer every time for my own music. I can't believe that a drum plugin has held up for 10 years but it still sounds the best. I find that the original library + custom&vintage add on have enough sounds to cover everything I will ever make. The newer libraries are too processed and sound cheesy compared to the original.

  • DrumJam is my favorite on iOS. The bedlam feature is also great. I used it also to trigger some synths this way. It also covers a lot ground for a little app. Ethnic, Electronic, Rock, Pop.....etc.

Indeed, Superior Drummer 2 is on sale.... please don´t make me hungry ; )

  • I have fooled many people into thinking that it was a real drummer. If you can program it and mix it right then it's just a real drummer.

Better get out the credit card

  • I'm still using SD1, which is why I'm still on Snow Leopard on my Mac when I do music.

+1 for an honest assessment. And another +1 (if such a thing was possible) for using the verb to drangle. Very good.

I know what you mean about the desktop and the tablet in this instance, but don't sell yourself too short; Beat Machine's pretty darn cool.

  • Session Drummer is under construction but no ETA as far as I have seen yet anyway.

  • Yes, beat-machine is great! Definitely one of my favorites on iPhone!

  • @stormjh1 didn't you post a long review of a bunch of different drum apps at one point? It was good, whoever did it!

  • One downside to DrumJam currently is the lack of user-customizable kits, although that will be added in a future update. But otherwise, definitely worth a shot :)

  • The current version of DrumPerfect (1.04) does not support midi-in, other then midiclock sync.

The upcoming version 1.05 will feature extensive midi-in support though: coremidi and virtual midi, midi note recording, and midi command messages for remote control.

Hope to release it before the end of the year.

  • Great! Any plans to go universal?

  • @Munibeast: have looked into this, but concluded that it would require a too big effort atm.

  • That's a pair of good news posts right there.

If you are just going to drive drum sounds from a MIDI sequencer, I think the kits in SampleTank are excellent. You can even control each kit's effects. I have purchased many of the add-ons; so, I can't remember which kits come with the free version of SampleTank. I use my Korg padKONTROL to trigger the drums in SampleTank externally. I can even get MIDI velocity when pounding on the pads for realistic sounding performances. I am really impressed with the sound quality and variety of drum sounds from acoustic to electronic in SampleTank. ThumbJam would be another alternative because of it's good MIDI implementation and great sounding kits.

  • I really like SeekBeats. :)

Sampletank is indeed a good option. MTS also supports soundfonts so investing some time into searching for and creating your own layered drum soundfonts may be a good investment.

DM-1 ships with a good set of samples. So does funkbox if you're looking for classic drum machines. They both have more features but there's no reason they can't just be used as a drum brain. Same for the nanostudio or beatmaker.

I had the free version but it wasn't useful for drums. Can you just buy the a drum pack for ST? I don't really need all the rest at this point.

Is this from SessionBand? Thx, joe

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  • No not from session band and there is more info on here somewhere but I will have to look around for it tomorrow perhaps. The developer was on that thread saying it was on the way but no date set.

Where is the bedlam feature please? I am not aware of that particular feature but it sure sounds like fun, maybe I am already using it but do not know the terminology.

  • I love that feature
