PolyDelay Polyrhythmic Delay Plugin (AUv3)

Poly Delay is an audio effect plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host application such as Logic Pro or GarageBand.

Overview

Poly Delay is a dual delay line / stereo effect with optional host tempo sync. While PolyDelay can be used to create interesting stereo polyrhythmic delays, it can also produce more familiar delay patterns such as dotted eighth and quarter note triplets.
Polyrhythms, Divisions and Beats
PolyDelay calculates delay times based on a BPM (beats per minute) tempo, and the polyrhythmic
notation of D:B, where D = divisions and B = beats. For example, 3:2 would mean that the time for 2 beats should be divided by 3. If you're more use to the idea of note lengths and delay times, such as quarter notes and dotted eighths, etc., this might be confusing at first, but hopefully this guide will help.

Firstly, everything starts with the beat! So, for 120BPM, each beat (or quarter note) will be half a second, or 500ms. So if you want a quarter note delay, you want 1 division within one beat, so you would set Divs and Beats to 1.

Here are some typical note values, lengths (120BPM) and their D:B values:

1/4 = 500ms = 1:1 (take the length of one beat, and divide that by one)
1/8 = 250ms = 2:1 (take the length of one beat, and divide that by two
1/16 = 125ms = 4:1 (etc.)
1/32 = 63ms = 8:1 (etc.)

See how the divisions are doubled-up for each note? And here are some dotted and triplet note examples - see how the D:B numbers start to get Interesting!

1/4D = 750ms = 2:3
1/4T = 333ms = 3:2
18D = 375ms = 4:3
1/8T = 167ms = 3:1

A classic stereo delay would be 1:1 (1/4) left, and 4:3 (1/8D) right with Width set to max. If you want a really long delay, a 1:8 setting would give you 4 seconds at 120BPM with Multiply set to Normal, or 8 seconds set to Half. The Presets also include some typical (and not so typical!) examples to get you started.

The fun really starts when you start mixing
"unusual" (typically odd numbers) divisions and beats, such as 5:4 or 2:7. These sorts of relationships are what we typically refer to as polyrhythms. Try experimenting with PolyDelay on simple sequences and drum parts / patterns and you may start to hear all sorts of interesting rhythmic interplay as your brain tries to figure out what's going on!

For additional tone-shaping, PolyDelay includes variable stereo width, a high and low pass filter, stereo modulation and internal limiting to keep audio levels in check.

  • Howdy. Here's a little demo featuring more "conventional" sub-divisions

  • No brainer. I can’t wait to get into this one.

Thank you @Rob_Jackson_Music! I only had a few minutes to try it out, but it was so much fun to play guitar with this delay.

I would like to ask you for a favor: The Multiply switch is great, would it be possible to add a "Quarter" mode to it, please?
I want to have the delay synchronized with the host and I would appreciate an even slower tempo than "Half". This would be especially useful for polyrhythms.

  • Sounds pretty cool. Here comes the but/s though. 😅 The sections that are off are too dark*, I changed the tempo manually (with some nice use of language accompanied) before I noticed the button. Now comes next thing, the host sync is open i.e changes with the preset. That's a bit annoying, just a tad.

Now, back too making noise ☺️😁

*has it always been like this i.e previous releases - maybe eyes are even badder than usual...

  • It's really fun as filo says messing with guitar, sounds awesome.

  • Love it! Thanks..

This sounds great. Love that new order style beat.

  • Sounds great on Acapellas also.
    My fav Rob Jackson AU

  • Love it, Rob.

Here's an idea I'm still waiting for literally anyone to implement for a delay, so please run with it if it makes sense for you: A tap surface that allows a person to enter a specific pattern for the delay. Possibly even two tap surfaces so both left and right patterns can be created. And the pattern should be able to be quantized or not.

And whoever runs with this, here's a name (feel free to use it, or not): Tap-Tap-Tap Delay

"Tap-Out Delay" would be a good name

I love apps I can purchase by just digging thorough the couch for spare change.,, of course I need to visit the store with a “Coin Counting” machine that provides an Apple Gift card so I do have a reason to get up, get dressed and go out.

I do find the selected colors to have some contrast issues not helpful for accessibility for the vision impaired. But I can tell a Rob Jackson app by the branded color schemes and UI styles. I love the sliders for finger controls.

  • Read all these comments about delay tap tempo requests and thought “for a touch screen device, there’s no auv3s with tap tempo?! That can’t be right…” went through all mine, no tap… google came up with a couple: eventide ultratap n AU3:DUB. This is a travesty, tap tempo should be in every iOS delay app! So I’m joining the cause!

    +1 for tap button!

Same here. It's so easy to "slide" your way to a good sounding patch. This UI style works better than one might initially imagine.

    YES... YES... Yes... yes...

But it's not just tempo, it's any pattern I want to be able to tap on the delay in real time.

  • It's just IM(probably unpopular)PO but these are to me among the worst UIs on iOS. I prefer a UI that you reach for a dial or slider because thoughtful UI design has placed and designed these controls to stand out from each other, or be arranged in a useful way. These look more like a shopping list and I know I would never use it just by looking at it. Yes, it's about the sound, but there are plenty of plugins with a decent UI that do what these shopping list plugins do.

Again, just my PO, so don't give me any of that guff about why are you here if you don't want to say it's the greatest. I get that there are people unlike me that are happy with these UIs, and that's cool and to be expected. Thankfully, we all have different tastes. Just throwing my coin in the well.

Nah, it's OK. Not all things appeal to all people.

+1 The shopping list parable had me smiling. Now, I really like this one i.e the sound of it but, UI and UIX are always important to me. I wish I could help Rob by giving him a design he couldn't resist but I'm coming up empty.

  • Hey Rob - Sell 'em some IAP UI's. 😉

  • I'm perfectly happy with these UIs except for one thing. So many times I end up unknowingly adjusting a slider when I scroll the UI. I there was even just a slightly different color in the scroll zone, it would remind me to place my finger there instead of thinking I can somehow hit a blank space between sliders and get a scroll out of swiping there.

    Only $29.99 each. ;)

Sounds like someone wants to purchase a UI upgrade?

I'm too cheap. I'd sooner suck it up and teach myself to not do that if whining doesn't get 'er done. 😉

    Copy that. :D

  • I'm with @Ailerom about Rob's IUs. They look like alpha versions of apps to me, where the dev would test features before thinking of the IU :D
BUT… I have to admit that, as I've never bought any of these apps, clearly because of the IU, I just can't speak about the efficiency of such a IU. So like @Ailerom I can understand that it can work for others o:) .
