Should I update my ipad 3 to ios 8?

edited November 2014 in General App Discussion

Im asking because im on ios 7 and am stable here with the apps I use. Though I don't want to be in the stone age so to speak and miss out on any cool new features in ios 8. With that said is ios 8 stable on ipad 3? IF so does it slow it down or lag with certain apps? Is it worth it overall?

Thanks!

  • I have no problems with 8, but if you're happy and not missing out on anything you need now, then stay happy. When the balance tips, move then. 2 cents etc.

  • If it ain't broke don't break it, which is what iOS 8 will do to your music apps.

  • If everything is working do not upgrade. You won't be able to go back. Why risk that? I'm still running 7.1.2 and am pleased with it's performance.

I'm using the latest OS, but only on my iphone. Does IOS 7 have greyscale? If not, that's the only feature I really care for on the new OS. Don't be troubled, you're not missing out on anything.

  • If it ain't broke... ;-) I'm still on 7 on 2 3's.

  • If you do upgrade, I found better success on 8 when I did a full reset. I'm surprised Apple doesn't appear to recommend this, since we wouldn't dream of installing a completely new OS on a computer without doing a full wipe to drive. This was a lesson learned for a lot of folks on TE's OP-1 as well.

  • Okay, thank you everyone for your input. I guess I won't be updating than.

  • What about being on an ipad 3 and installing the latest updates of apps, is that advisable, animoog for instance, is it ok to update to the latest version while staying on os 7.2?

  • edited November 2014

No @kobamoto - do NOT update Animoog. It's still broken. And esp. on a 3 or a mini original.

The LFO and screen note travel rate are only working properly at an AB buffer size of 256. At 128 they double speed, 1/2 at 512 and 1/4 at 1024. This has been noted to Moog and is not yet fixed.

On an iPad 3, you cannot realistically run with an AB buffer size of < 512, so, Animoog would be broken for you. (Among other apps that are also not working properly when updated to the latest versions on iOS 7).

A fair amount yet needs to get sorted out before it's entirely safe to udpate a good number of apps from pre-AB SDK 2.1 versions.

  • ok thanks Derek.

Well, sorry but this is not exactly true.Nothing is"broken"from the apps i use (Animoog aside, but this one is broken everywhere...) and ios 7 is also not the most reliable ios for music anymore (if it ever was).ios 8.1.1 runs better on my air 2 than ios 7.1.2 on my Mini Retina. But i have to say that i use IAA all the time and rarely Audiobus. And i never use more than 2-3 IAA's at once to avoid problems.

  • Another thing - if you rely on any apps that are not updated yet, you can't "upgrade" to iOS 8. For example, iMini, iGrand.

  • I went ahead and upgraded my ipad 3 from 7.1.2 to 8.1.1, my advice like many others on here would be to wait, is heartbreaking when apps like samplr disable audiobus when you launch it, this happened to quite a lot of my music apps.

I like some of the new features and it runs as smooth as ios 7.1.2 on my ipad 3, but whatever apple did in the transition from 7 to 8 has interfered with my workflow when it comes to audio. Also it's a bit more crashtastic then 7 on my ipad, 10 minute reboots, start to wear thin after a while, although this has settled down a bit in the last few days.

  • thanks Mister_rz, may I ask whats the performance like if you're not using audio bus with your music apps, and also what's the situation concerning IAA ?

  • Overall I'd say the performance seems similar to 7, I haven't got into any prolonged music sessions since updating, but I'm not noticing major degradation in audio performance. I haven't tried bluetooth audio/midi yet, as this was one of the things tempting me to upgrade.

In regards to IAA, I rarely used it before, preferring AB and bouncing into logic, I used it in garageband and auria from time to time, recorded alchemy into gb earlier to test it out and it seemed fine, no audio dropouts or stuttering, only thing different was the wonky ui in alchemy when I first launched it as an IAA source, closed a few apps, relaunched and it was back to normal.

Because a lot of my work flow involves ab, this was the most disappointing part of the upgrade to 8, I switched screen rotation to control center and mute to the bottom button, forgot I had it on mute and panicked when half my audio apps had no sound. After I realised I felt like an arse, I expect to lose a few audio apps each update, as I've built up a decent library since the first ipad, ios 8 overall has been similar to previous versions with the amount I've lost.

I do need to do some extended testing/sessions though to give a more complete answer, one thing that is annoying about 8, is the default keyboard will often freeze when typing, had this on early versions of 7 though too.

Here is a list of what worked, although I didn't test things like loading, saving and other functions in most of these. Also a list of apps that had issues, I tried to keep the list to older apps that don't get updated and apps that aren't as well known for the most part, as the better known/updated apps have been discussed already, this is a preliminary list though.

  • Shit, that went wrong, everything was on separate lines, looks like a jumble, apologies.

  • no worries, it's happened to me too :)
can't thank you enough for the info I'm sure all iPad 3 users like myself appreciate it.

  • Wow. Just goes to show how diverse we are :-) Of all those apps, all I have from that set is Epic Synth, Modular, Rhythm Studio and Synth-X - but I have 75 others loaded not in that list :-)

  • yeah i don't have most of those either but I'm so glad to see synth-x is working. it's kind of funny that strange agency is doing so well, they hardly ever update.

I have a question Mister_rz, is your list all about apps working or not working in stand alone or in conjunction with audiobus specifically?

  • and consider this the last question I'll ever ask on the subject, is it the consensus that if you're not using audio bus at all, that updating the os and all the apps is no problems for an iPad 3 ?

  • Fwiw i wiped and reinstalled my ipad after the update and performance has been noticably better.

  • edited November 2014

    @cian:

thats probably one reason why i`m quite satisfied with iOS 8 (on Air 2),i did not restore from an existing backup,i installed everything manually on a clean system.Starting with the most important apps (Audiobus,Auria,Cubasis...)and doing a couple of restarts while installing.

  • yeah but what I'm saying is that if one is not using audiobus, then do the apps work correctly or even if you're not using audiobus don't update to 8 on an iPad 3 ?

  • I have IOS 8 on an iPad and it's fine now (other than audiobus issues that have nothing to do with the iPad). It was pretty dubious before the wipe. I wonder if a lot of the performance issues have more to do with dirty installs.

  • @MusicInclusive

When it comes to music apps I'm a bit ocd, which can get in the way at times, as I get distracted by new apps, instead of really getting into what I've got already, love all the experimental music apps especially.

    @kobamoto

All the apps listed I tested standalone, didn't want to list the ones with audiobus, as the problems have been discussed here and I wanted to give you an idea of how apps from 2009-2013 fared on ios 8. Overall I haven't had many problems outside of apps that haven't been updated for ab in ios 8, am gutted tho about mixtikl 5, as I doubt it will be updated with version 6 out.

I'd say if you don't rely on ab and use iaa more, have newer apps that get updated, then maybe you'll be alright on ios 8, but it might be worth doing a fresh install like cian and Crabman suggested, as I did an update via itunes on my mac. Just double check if your most used apps don't have any problems on ios 8 first, I've lost dm1 until the next update, was one of my main goto drum apps too. Me personally I wish I hadn't updated yet, should of been a bit more patient, but curiosity got the better of me.

  • I see, ok so whats the best way to do a fresh install?

  • I think there is an option when upgrading to set your ipad up as a new device, another method would be to put your ipad into recovery mode http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263 then restore via itunes, after you've updated to ios 8 or if 8 has been downloaded to itunes. Just have a new backup if you want to keep all your app data, then choose between putting apps back on individually via itunes or as a whole via itunes or icloud depending where your back ups are, unless of course you want to start afresh.

  • Although personally you might just want to try and upgrade your ipad as is and see how it fares, I've found even when I've been stuck in recovery mode after a wonky update and done a fresh install, it took my ipad a week or so to settle down, doing a few restarts seems to help.

  • got it! , thanks for the help
